Welcome to the AHS Theatre Ensemble’s production of Stephen Schwartz’s Pippin.

Quite loosely based on historical accounts of Pippin, the son of Charlemagne the Great, this grown-up fable takes its inspiration from a wide variety of theatrical traditions. Drawing from the improvisational antics of Commedia dell’arte to the didacticism of medieval morality plays, Hirson and Schwartz weave a simple, compelling story about coming to terms with quotidian life. Pippin, bursting with youthful idealism, is determined to break free from his father’s imposing shadow and find fame and fortune on his own terms. What he discovers on his magical adventure is not quite what he planned for himself (sound familiar?). Replete with patricide, lust, and love, his journey ultimately brings him back to a deeper understanding of the power of family. What makes this particular tale fun for the audience is the play-within-a-play aspect. When a last-minute casting change introduces an untried actor in the title role, the raggedy troupe scrambles to move their humble play forward as the rookie Pippin’s personal discoveries shed new light on their tired old script.

On another note, I’d like to give a very special thank you to Arnelle Ullrich, who was instrumental in awarding the Theatre Ensemble with a substantial grant from the Albany City School District and the NYS Extended School Day/Violent Prevention Program. We are fortunate that the District continues to support our efforts with arts-in-ed programming, even in particularly difficult financial years such as this one. Please be sure to drop a note or make a call to thank our Board and administration for their tangible belief in the AHS Theatre Ensemble: Better yet, contact the media and let them know that a shining gem is set right here in the AHS campus.

Finally, though we are very lucky that the Albany City School District supports this organization as generously as it does, we still must rely on private donations in order to bring to you what you see on stage tonight. Full-scale musical productions cost far more than tight public-school budgets can provide. Thank you to our loyal contributors for their financial support—and for those of you who haven’t yet joined our ranks, donate tonight! It is an investment that brings dividends in the lives of our young people for years to come.

Gratefully yours,

Ward Dales

The Charles Coleman Performing Arts Scholarship, established in June 2005, was created to assist students

interested in pursuing college-level studies in the theatre arts. This annual scholarship awards $500 to a maximum of two

deserving Albany High School seniors who have been actively involved in the theatre program.

As evidence of the success of this program, one of the 2006 recipients of the Charles Coleman Performing Arts Scholarship – Donnell James Foreman – is now on tour with the Broadway

cast of Hairspray, on leave of absence from his studies at Pace University.

We would like to continue to offer this scholarship for years to come. We invite you – and all others who appreciate the rich

tradition of dramatic arts at Albany High – to consider contributing to the scholarship fund.

To make your tax-deductible donation, mail your check, payable to the Albany Booster Club (with “Coleman Scholarship” noted in the memo line), to:
