(ARA) - A gas fireplace can addambiance and warmth to any room, and with the cold weather, youmight be dreaming of adding one inyour home. Because purchasing afireplace is not something we doevery day, there are some impor-tant things to consider.
If you have lots of questions, you're not alone. It's smart to do
your research and get advice fromthe pros. Joel Ginsberg, retail man-ager and fireplace expert forFireside Hearth & Home, offerssome important considerations soyou get the right gas fireplace foryour home.

bbuurrnniinngg ffiirreeppllaaccee??Many people choose gas
fireplaces for the convenience. Youcan heat yourhome andenjoy beautifulambiance bysimply touch-ing a remotecontrol or wallswitch.Whetheryou're startingnew, or wantto replace anold fireplacefrom the 70sor 80s, thereare plenty ofaffordableoptions.
Already have a wood-burning fire-place? Consider transforming it witha cleaner and more efficient gasfireplace insert that fits directly intothe existing opening. As part of theinstallation, two liners are installedinside the chimney; one expels thefire's combustion exhaust andbyproducts outside the home, theother draws in outside air for com-bustion. This guarantees no roomair is used for combustion whichstops heat loss and protects theindoor air quality of your home. Youget the benefits of gas without hav-ing to replace the entire fireplace.
WWhhaatt ssttyyllee ffiirreeppllaaccee ffiittss yyoouurr hhoommee??The sky is the limit when it
comes to fireplace design. Whetheryou prefer the traditional stone fire-place designs or you favor sleekmodern styles, there's bound to besomething to complement yourhome's interior design.
The look of the fire itselfcomes with many style options.Traditionalists prefer real-
istic manufactured logs with burningembers. However, if your designstyle leans toward contemporary, you might like options like the
Cosmo 32, manufactured by Heat &Glo. These styles are inspired byEuropean designs that have fea-tures like linear flames that flicker inunison, unique materials like blackonyx, and panoramic viewingangles of the fire. Placement is alsobeing redefined, as modern stylefireplaces are often positioned at ahigher level, evoking a living pieceof fine art. To find out which style isbest for you visitwww.fireplaces.com.

Did you know a gas fire-place or fireplace insert can helpreduce your heating costs? Similarto the premise of a hybrid car, youcan turn down your home's thermo-stat and Zone Heat the rooms youuse most with an efficient gas fire-place. This cuts down on theamount of fuel consumed by yourfurnace and can help to reducehome heating bills by 20 to 40 per-

(ARA) - If you've finished making your holiday gift list, don't put the pen and paper away just yet. While the holidays take up a lot of attention right now, it's also a great time to look a bit further intothe future. With the new year just around the corner, planning for home improvement projects nowcan help you prioritize and budget.
Spending more time indoors at home might be bringing some potential projects to yourattention. Maybe you've noticed fraying carpet under your toes, chipped paint on a window frame ora paint color that feels outdated - whatever needs to be addressed should get marked down on yourfix-it list.
Give yourself a deadline for completing the list and then call a household meeting to startprioritizing. One of the most important things you can bring to that meeting is an idea of how muchyou can afford to spend. Given that the economy is still lagging - and many people are feeling thatpull on their pocketbooks - it's wisest to avoid going into debt to accomplish everything you want todo.
Setting a home improvement budget gives you parameters to work within as you weigh theimportance of each project on your list. However, you should also come to the table with a reason-able idea of how much it will cost to complete each of the tasks you want to finish.
Armed with your list and your budgetary figures, go through each item, weighing the prosand cons of both doing it now and letting it wait. You'll inevitably have a lot of options, including putting things off and saving more money throughout theyear, or investing some money in repairs now and letting your savings grow for midyear projects. Naturally, you'll also need to consider the constraints ofweather on your projects - if you want to put on a new deck, you'll have to wait until at least spring. Consider the fact that an outdoor project might feel alot more necessary when warmer weather arrives than it does now.
Your long-term plans for your home should also come into play. If you're planning on selling anytime soon, consider carefully whether the projectsyou plan on doing will pay off at sale time. Additionally, if you plan on catching a buyer's eye, take an objective look at what might help you make thesale. If you're working with a Realtor, you might even want to discuss with them the best fix-ups and repairs within your budget.

pletely move-in ready. The main living area of the home features an open con-cept design, and the bedrooms are laid out in a split floor plan design.
The front of the home has a large rocking chair frontporch with two ceiling fans for added comfort. As you enter thefront of the home, you are greeted by a quaint, tiled foyer with acoat closet.

(ARA) - Homeowners often worryabout keeping their homes safe andsecure for their families. And it's nowonder: nearly 70 percent of homebreak-ins are in the form of kick-ins toa door, according to the U. S.Department of Justice.
You have many easy andaffordable options for ensuring asafer home, and ultimately, greaterpeace of mind. Here's a home securi-ty checklist to get you started.
AAsssseessss tthhee ppeerriimmeetteerr..Walk around youryard at different times of the day tojudge lighting and shadows. Thinkabout how family members enter andexit the home from different door-ways. Do you have sufficient exteriorlighting to ensure that they can enteryour home, can see and can beseen? Install better lighting nearevery entrance. Take a look at yourlandscaping from an intruder's pointof view. Plant some thorny or pricklyshrubbery below the windows andnext to entrances so there's no placefor someone to hide in waiting.
AAdddd aann aallaarrmmeedd lloocckk.. Most alarm sys-tems trigger after a door has alreadybeen opened. However, if you don'thave an alarm system, an alarmedlock is a great alternative, and willallow you to instantly hear what'shappening at your door. For example,Schlage, a leader in home security, offers a first-of-its-kind Keyed EntryWith Built-In Alarm. It's an alarmedlock with the added safeguard of asensor alarm that lets you knowwhen it is being tampered with. It hasthree alarm modes, which can be setto alert you to different types of activi-ty at the door - when it's been openand closed, when it's been tamperedwith and when there's been a forcedentry.
"An alarmed lock provides anadded layer of security that manyhomeowners' are looking for and canput their minds at ease," says Chris
DeSchamp, Schlage portfolio leader,electronic security.
The battery-operated units, which can be seen atwww.alarm.schlage.com, costsaround $99 and are easy toinstall and are availableat select The HomeDepot stores, homede-pot.com, lowes.com,amazon.com andbuild.com.
SSaaffeegguuaarrdd tthhee wwiinnddoowwss..Make sure yourwindows arealso set upfor security.Install quality windowlocks that keep windowsin a closed position, toavoid giving criminals anopen invitation to enter.Manufacturers offer avariety of options to safeguarddifferent types of windows includingdouble-hung and casement windows.

Depending on the manufacturer and model, gas fireplaces can bevented or unvented. Direct vented gas fireplaces have sealed combustionsystems that protect indoor air quality by drawing outside air for the fireand expelling 100 percent of combustion exhaust and by-products outsidethe home, resulting in a safe, beautiful fire. In contrast, unvented (a.k.a.vent-free or vent-less) fireplaces lack sealed combustion or venting sys-tems, drawing indoor air and oxygen for the fire, while expelling exhaustand byproducts, like carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and moisture, into
the home. While unvented units are legal in many areas of the country, some hearth manufacturers, remodelers and hearth retailers will not sellthem due to safety and moisture/condensation issues.

He says the average price of a gas fireplace including installationis $4,400. For those interested in a gas fireplace insert, the cost can be aslittle as $2,900 installed.
