HOUSING FOR LABOURS WORKING AT SHIP BREAKING YARD ,ALANG INTRODUCTION: The Alang Ship Breaking Yard which has been functioning since 1983, has dismantled nearly 6318 vessels till 2013 and produces three million metric tons of scrap metal annually. ship breaking violates numerous national and international regulations related to pollution, hazardous wastes, and labour rights. Inadequate health facilities have been tackled by the Supreme Court and the Inter Ministerial Committee on Ship breaking to no avail. It was only after Supreme Court directions in 1997 and 2003, that infrastructure was built to handle hazardous wastes. There is a lack of housing, sanitation, water and no education facilities for the workers’ children. Ship breaking activities result in significant environmental impacts. There are reports of cattle dying after eating the waste from dismantled ships and people suffer respiratory and skin problems when rubbish dumps are set on fire. Most of the nearby villages suffer from water scarcity and salinity. A numbers of wells are so polluted that they have been abandoned, according to the preliminary report. The annual turnover of the industry stands at Rs 6,000 crore. There are 169 plots for ship breaking but only 132 plots are functional. Each plot employs 150–200 workers and towards the end of 2013 there were around 35,000 workers. At least one ship is dismantled a day and the workers are mostly from Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, and Odisha earning daily wages between Rs 235 to 255 a day. Around 92 percent of the workers earn between Rs. 5000 to Rs. 10,000 per month. Page | 2

INTRODUCTION:

The Alang Ship Breaking Yard which has been functioning since 1983, has dismantled nearly 6318 vessels till 2013 and produces three million metric tons of scrap metal annually. ship breaking violates numerous national and international regulations related to pollution, hazardous wastes, and labour rights.

NET STUDY TULOU HOUSING ,GUANGZHOUThe commission was to design a 220 apartment housing complex for people for low income families in Guangzhou. Urbanus decided to give the complex a nice and intimate atmosphere, by reinterpreting the traditional Hakka Houses.

This housing typology correspond to 300 year old houses in the south and they are basically a large housing project where complete families live as a community (aunts, nieces, nephews, etc

CULTURAL AND SOCIAL CONTEXT

Since the beginning of the millennium, the architects of the globe have not only brought their cutting-edge designs to China, but also drew the whole world's attention to what can be built in China. Many domestic architects are opposed to the fact that some well-known foreign architects have taken advantage of China's eagerness to build dazzling modern cityscapes, thus some have became the advocates to call to rediscover the traditional Chinese architecture.

The Hakka people built fortified earthern houses to defend themselves against fierce animals and thieves. The layout of their Tulou followed the Chinese dwelling tradition of "closed outside, open inside" concept: an enclosed wall with living quarters around the peripheral and a common courtyard at the center. These round earthern houses captured the architects’ fascination with its underlying design philosophy.

Resulting from extensive research into the ancient heritage and the social dynamics of current urbanisation trends in China, the urban Tulou has been seen as a unique experiment in low-income housing and the transformation of vernacular dwelling to suit contemporary living environments. “By introducing a 'new Tulou' to modern cities and by careful experimentation of form and economy, one can transcend conventional urban design”. URBANUS experiments explored ways to stitch the Tulou within the existing urban fabric of the city. The close proximity of each tulou building helps insulate the users from the chaos and noise of the outside environment, while creating an intimate and comfortable environment inside. “A round shape would virtually fit in anywhere .

This project successfully addressed how the old vernacular can provide inspiration for modern low income housing that has a strong communal focus, and improves the lives of migrants in urban enclaves in China today.

MATERIALS AND BUILDING TECHNIQUES

The entire structure is wrapped in a perforated concrete shell punctuated by wooden lattices that shade the balconies, giving each unit a secondary living space. The design translates the visual monotony inherent to an "e-shaped loop" with richly textured inner and outer facade.

EARTH AND CLIMATE

In the south China, where there is a much longer summer season and a relatively warm winter, it is necessary to prevent the penetration of the sun by using few windows, smaller courtyard together with thick walls. Those are the technically sophisticated features of the traditional Fujian Tulou.

Like the thick walls of pounded earth that functions as the insulation from summer heat, Urbanus designed extra living spaces by adding balconies to each unit. The balconies with wooden lattices build a protective outer layer to foil direct sunshine in the summer, while the open interior of the structure creates a sense of space and light, as well as provides plenty of natural ventilation.
