Everyone starts the year with good intentions.

As Nicola Steadman, one of our private client solicitors says, “Some of these fall by the wayside after a fortnight but sometimes the intentions last much longer.

Making a Will can be something with can be done very quickly, but will last for a lot longer than most other New Years’ Resolutions!

It is easy to put these things off especially when it can cost money to do, but often in the long run it will be money well spent. We often find that when disputes arise they could have been prevented if people had done certain things in the first place.

Many people say ‘they have just not got around to it’, so there is no time like the present or say ‘they have nothing to leave’, but this is inevitably not true. Everybody has

something! Whether this be a current account or jewellery or personal items, it is important to make sure they go where YOU want them to go.

Have a think about:• Who you want to appoint as Executors (the

people who make sure the wishes of the Will are carried out)

• Whether you want to support any Charities.• Who you want to receive your personal items

such as jewellery and vehicles.• Who you want to benefit from your cash and

property.

Happy 40th to former Grange Now deliverer. Current colleagues of former paperboy, Pete Brierley would like to send him a message - “Special 40th birthday wishes from the team that always delivers.” Happy Birthday Pete!

Five speakers stood up to have their say at the SLDC meeting in Kendal on 18th December. This was part of the debate to decide on the way ahead for Grange Lido. Who knows, perhaps 2019 will now be a year of action, after many years of many words.Mrs. Lambert referred to swimming provision in South Lakes and explained how the ten competing swimming clubs of Cumbria are at a disadvantage because of the lack of an accessible 50 metre pool. George Parr referred to a lack of activity by SLDC which had led to further deterioration over the years. His main point was that from the Structural Engineers’ report the deterioration of the concrete pool is such that reinstatement of a pool would mean a complete rebuild at horrendous additional expense.Peter Endsor, Mayor and Chairman of Grange Town Council explained that there had been years of work to try to find a way forward and that it was the view of the Town Council, and many local residents, that they wished to see the site reopened, to be economically viable and to respect the architectural heritage of the site. To be specific, Grange Town Council supports the light touch proposal of SLDC. He stated that the SLDC refurbishment proposal was economically sustainable and the Town Council offered 100% support.Next speaker was Claire Logan, Grange town councillor and a director of Grange Lido CIC who referred to the holiday flats as proposed in the SGL business plan put forward and expressed concern that this paved the way for the facility to be private rather than publicly available to all. Phil Bradby, Chair of SGL then spoke and explained that the group were working to save the pool not only for the current but also for future generations. He emphasised that the group were not asking for money from the council but the chance to raise money independently and carry the project forward. He asked that consultants be appointed to see if the restoration plan and running

of the pool as a sustainable and self funding business was viable. He also explained that the SGL proposal involved no capital cost for local taxpayers and would provide a great facility for both locals and tourists.SLDC councillors all spoke highly of the Save Grange Lido group and appreciated the passion they had shown. Councillor Jonathan Brook proposed that the light touch proposal which would include repairing sea defences go ahead while simultaneously allowing SGL to develop their plans. This allows for the possibility of a future pool while allowing SLDC to get on with repair works now to enable the site to be repaired, cleaned and opened.Cllr. Tom Harvey, previous Chair of Grange Town Council proposed an amendment to give Save Grange Lido the site (I.e. hand it over to them) and give them the opportunity to go for a full pool refurbishment. His fellow Conservative councillor James Airey backed him up and suggested SLDC should encourage such an impassioned group as SGL and give them the chance.Giles Archibald, SLDC council leader stepped up to explain they were reluctant to hand over the site as it would restrict the council’s future ability to manage it. He emphasised the need to ensure that future financial obligations were not passed on or committed to as this would be irresponsible of current councillors. Various other councillors spoke but ultimately the original proposal of going ahead with a light touch restoration was voted on and carried while the amendment proposed of handing over the site to SGL was defeated.Let’s hope this marks the moment when something will actually happen to bring the Lido site back into use and to be an asset of value and pride to local people and their elected representatives. The proposed designs shown below and on the front cover will be going to cabinet on January 23rd and these are yet to be approved formally as the final designs.

By the time you read this article I hope all readers have had an enjoyable and relaxing festive break.2018 has proven to be an eventful year, to say the least! Amongst other things, we had terrific heat in the summer and the national football team fell agonizingly short in the world cup, losing in the semifinals.Politically, President Trump has taken many things to a new level, the use of social media included, and that will doubtless continue. Domestically Brexit continues to dominate our news and as I type the outcome could be anywhere within a wide range. We all have our own views on this.2019 is likely to be just as memorable and with Brexit certainly a historical year.May we wish each and everyone one of you a prosperous 2019.

ADVERTORIAL

New name and new premises Lamberts is changing its name to Grange Pet Shop and along with the new name comes a great new shop. You will now find them in the former ‘Watchers’ premises, between Grange Flower Service and Grange Laundry, on Kents Bank Road. Owner Sian Lambert told Grange Now, “What won’t be changing is the same great service”. Opening on Monday 7th January 2019, Grange Pet Shop will be open 6 days a week - Monday to Saturday. They

will still be supplying a wide range of frozen raw diet food along with wet food and a big selection of dried foods including James Wellbeloved and Burns. They also offer free, daily, local delivery.Sian said, “We will still have a wide range and variety of products and we also have friendly staff who have an extensive knowledge of animal management and nutrition”.Sian would also like to reassure customers that, “despite the change of name, loyalty cards and points will be transferred and you will get a new card”.

County MattersAt a recent meeting with Grange Town Councillors, myself and the County Council Traffic Engineer for our area discussed the parking and traffic issues residents have raised over the past few months.

The Engineer took on board all comments and did mention that some new and renewed lines and signs would be implemented shortly in the Town Centre.

After much discussion at my suggestion it was agreed that the County would put out speed monitoring tubes around the Town Centre in the Spring. This would enable us

all to ascertain the speeds on the roads at the sites we all agreed to and then look at any problem areas.

Cumbria Trading Standards have received reports of cold callers operating in the Grange over Sands area, selling household items door to door. Consumers should be extremely cautious when approached by cold callers offering to sell goods or services. They can often use persuasive or aggressive tactics to get you to purchase goods that you might not necessarily want or need Trading Standards advice is to always say NO to any cold callers, try to avoid answering the door and to look out for

elderly or vulnerable friends, family and neighbours.

If you require further advice or wish to report any suspicious activity please contact Trading Standards via the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 03454 04 05 06 or visit www.adviceguide.org.uk. Alternatively you can contact the Police on 101.

Thank you to everyone for their support and involvement This includes the villages of Lindale, High and Low Newton, the large Parish of Cartmel Fell and Grange.

Happy New Year.

A helping hand with the treesThe Mayor, Cllr. Peter Endsor, would like to say a big thank you to Chris Plumb from Grange Now and his wife, Katie, for their help in putting up the Christmas trees in Grange. He would also like to thank Martin Ingle and Mark and James Walmsley for all their help too. Cllr. Endsor said “I couldn’t have done it without their help and I very much appreciate it”.

Carpets are the filters for our homesThey trap the dust and other airborne allergens that

would otherwise be floating around in the air we breathe.Whilst regular vacuuming of our carpets removes most of these allergens from the surface, over time, some of this stuff gets deep rooted within the pile of the carpet

and only a professional deep clean will get rid of it.For a cleaner and healthier home, make it a point to

regularly have your carpets and rugs deep cleaned. While it’s a chore to do it yourself, deep cleaning of your carpets

is something that should never be neglected. For best results, you can always seek help from a

professional carpet cleaning company like Revive Carpet Cleaning. We make thorough carpet cleaning fast and easy at very reasonable prices. Carpets are usually dry within 30

minutes of cleaning and we move your furniture too.

The photos show an example of what we can achieve, the first one was taken part way through the clean to show the difference as the job progressed, the second, the final result. We hope you agree that there is an amazing improvement.

Tim’s columnLooking back over 2018 I was really pleased that, despite the fact that Parliament has been incredibly distracted by EU exit debates, we actually managed to achieve quite a lot around here. Of course there was the stuff I do every year, advice surgeries, the Summer Tour, the young people’s football surgeries (not offering advice on football but getting together with young people to discuss their issues whilst kicking a ball around), etc. But there has been lots of other important stuff too. I can’t go into everything so I am going to focus on transport and health. We all know how bad the service on the Furness and Lakes Lines have been since Northern took over the franchise. I know it is small comfort but even with the endless cancellations on the Furness Line those of you who use it have actually been luckier than those using the Lakes Line. On that line the Transport Minister, Chris Grayling MP (someone who has definitely been distracted

by Brexit), went so far as to give Northern permission to cancel trains completely for several weeks. On the health front the campaign to get a radiotherapy unit continues. We have made some very positive strides this year with most recently an announcement that NHS England is conducting a feasibility study to look into building the unit which has to be good news. Much less good news was learning how badly served anyone experiencing mental health issues is around here. Particularly young people. A recent report on the service being delivered to our young people facing issues like eating disorders and self-harm found it to be “inadequate”.There’s no space to go into other issues like flooding, second homes and funding for our schools. But rest assured that I am working on them and will continue to do so during 2019.As ever thanks for your support, Tim Farron

In November, Grange held its first ‘Death Cafe’ at ‘Thyme Out’ cafe in conjunction with University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust and Grange and South Lakes Integrated Care Community. It was organised and supported by the South Lakes Specialist Palliative care team and led by the Clinical Nurse Specialist for the Grange Area and she has written this article for Grange Now.“Death cafes were developed in Europe and brought over to the UK by Jon Underwood, where they have taken off successfully in London.“Their purpose is to try and demystify death and reduce the taboo by encouraging conversations in a safe social space such as a cafe. These conversations can be thought-provoking and give us a chance to think about what we do (and what we don’t) want to happen to us when, as mere mortals, it is our time. Studies about the death cafe concept have revealed that by acknowledging our own mortality we then are more likely to lead more fulfilling lives and not take things for granted. We are also more likely to make sure those important plans are in place long before they are

needed. “The cafe was very well attended and positively evaluated with attendees stating they felt it was an excellent and enlightening experience in a lovely, relaxed atmosphere which helped to ease conversation about a known negative topic. A key issue that came from the cafe was the need to give thought to what matters both to ourselves and our family and friends. As a result of attending, some had planned to get themselves more organised with future planning and others to talk to their families about their wishes.“We have been asked to put on more of these events so will be planning more in the New Year.” Many thanks to Emma Miller for writing this article.

Electric Bikes are Fantastic! So say the determined trio who go out every decent day across the Cartmel peninsula on electric bikes. With a combined age of 221, Terence Hartley, Leonard Robinson and Georgian Hind take to the roads to explore the area and keep fit.

‘It always brings a smile to your face and gives a sense of achievement’ says Georgian (69).

All have bikes supplied locally from Reg at bespoke e-bikes in Flookburgh and the cycling friends regularly call in there for a natter.

The three all wear hi-visibility jackets and aim to travel around 15-20 miles on an outing. The main reasons they enjoy going out are fitness, enjoyment and camaraderie. So are there any downsides I asked? Well the occasional impatient driver might be an issue but mainly it is all positives.

So if you see the ‘three musketeers’ as Reg affectionately calls them, why not give them a wave, and if you fancy being a ‘fourth musketeer’ then Reg is the man to see.

A tidal wave of tourism?Look carefully at a few things happening locally, put them together and in the not too distant future it is just possible they could create a mini boom for tourism in our area.

Nothing is set in stone but the Eden Project North in Morecambe has unveiled its plans following a successful feasibility study. The original Eden in Cornwall has received over 20 million visitors since 2001. Morecambe now benefits from a vastly improved road access with the new Bay Gateway link to the M6, and the £60 million pound project would be a hugely popular attraction for the area.

What does this mean for us, I hear you say? Well only that it puts Morecambe Bay on the radar for people as a place to visit. The recent Morecambe Bay Cycleway has proved extremely popular and we may even see the estuary crossing.

The Government’s coastal revival fund of £1m has been awarded to 25 projects and happily one of those is the proposal for a walking and cycling route across the Arnside estuary. This would have a huge impact and would form an iconic link. It also neatly plugs a gap in the new 2,800 mile long English Coastal Path which is due to open in 2022.

Then, of course, there is the Lido which has been much discussed recently. Whatever happens there, it can only add to the attractiveness of this peninsula as a fabulous place to come and visit. There is evidence from other long distance walking and cycling routes that they provide a significant boost to the local crossing.

The feasibility study will consider design, cost, and safety for the estuary crossing but let’s hope it happens. A day out across the estuary from either side would be very attractive to many people

being exciting, traffic free and with lots to see and do at either end.

No doubt local groups such as Morecambe Bay Partnership who submitted the application for the feasibility study, The Arnside to Grange support groups and local councils will be pushing to make these studies turn into things that actually happen. Past experience with the Lido shows that the study stage can all that happens. But looking forward, there is such a fabulous opportunity here for the long-term well being of the area in terms of tourism, jobs and development by the various initiatives coming together at the same time.

Grange Now asked Morecambe Bay Partnership for an update on the proposed crossing of the estuary and they told us, “We want to use this to commission several studies, including the technical feasibility of getting on/of the viaduct at Arnside, and what would be needed to enable people arriving by train and car to access the viaduct bridge and village safely and sustainably. We want to make sure this will be a good thing for the residents and businesses of Arnside. We’ll also be looking at the potential impacts on the natural environment. We know that the estuary is a haven for birds.

“We have a small steering group of community members, local organisations and businesses and statutory bodies (CCC, SLDC, LDNP, Natural England) leading the work.

As you say in your article, there are a lot of opportunities for the area, anchored around the beauty of the Bay, to help regenerate coastal communities. These studies will help decide what the opportunity is for bridges over the viaducts, and hopefully pave a way for making it a reality.”

Doorstep sellers causing alarmMP Tim Farron has received a high number of complaints from residents about doorstep sellers. Men with north-east accents claiming to be former prisoners are trying to sell things door to door and in some cases have been very persistent, if not aggressive. This has understandably alarmed quite a few (mainly elderly) people in the town. The advice is to either get in touch with Tim’s office or with the police if you think there is anything illegal going on.

Rise Against HungerGrange Now has already reported on the ambitious plan to pack 60,000 nutritious meals in a Rise Against Hunger. Grange Rotary is leading the campaign, supported by the Mayor, Peter Endsor, Grange Chamber of Trade, and twenty-six Rotary clubs across Cumbria and Lancashire. It’s a mammoth task which will culminate in two hundred and fifty, yes 250, volunteers coming together on Saturday 13th April to pack meals in a fun factory setting at Cartmel Priory School. There will be shifts (two or four hours), plenty of fun, laughter and upbeat music to keep you going. If you’re now thinking to yourself, “What about people who are struggling locally?” Grange Rotary has that covered and in conjunction with the packing event, volunteers are being encouraged to bring a suitable food item for distribution to local food banks. Fundraising events to cover the cost of providing and transporting these meals have been ongoing for some time with people already giving very generously. The next fundraiser takes place on Friday 25th January in our wonderful Victoria Hall and will be in the form of ‘A Night at the Musicals’, featuring a wealth of talent:

Danielle Louise Thomas Danielle was christened “The Voice of Liverpool” by the late Ken Dodd and is a highly accomplished mezzo-soprano who can switch effortlessly from ‘Ave Maria’ to ‘I Could Have Danced All Night’ from ‘My Fair Lady’.

Michael And Julia Carroll Michael and Julia reside in Allithwaite with their two sons but hail from the Liverpool area. They are experienced and versatile performers of musical theatre, having played many leading roles for the prestigious Birkenhead Operatic Society Trust at the Empire Theatre, Liverpool. Stephen Mannings Stephen is currently in his dream job of Assistant Choral Director and Choral Animateur at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral. Rachel Battersby Rachel is well known to many locally in her position as Headteacher at Cartmel Primary School. What is less well known is that in her previous life she was a professional actor, whose wide-ranging talent can extend from Shakespeare to the world of musicals. She has appeared more recently in

both A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Much Ado About Nothing at Cartmel Priory.

Dave Stockton Dave is a leading man performer in the Barrow area. So much so that early next year he will be playing the double bill roles at the Forum of the slick lawyer Billy Flynn in Kander and Ebb’s razzle-dazzle musical ‘Chicago’ followed by the title role in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s exciting rock musical ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’.

Alastair Rae Known to Grange audiences for his Monsignor in Grange Operatic Society’s ‘Sister Act’ last year, former Regimental Sergeant Major, Alastair served in the Armed Forces for 24 years and, on retirement, pursued his passion for theatre. He appeared in four series of ITV’s ‘Bad Lads’ Army’ as the Team Sergeant and is due to appear as Annas, the High Priest, in ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ at the Barrow Forum in March.

Tickets priced at £10, £5 (for 16 and under) are available at the Tourist Information Centre. There will be a bar, tea/coffee refreshments, and raffle on the night.

HOW TO VOLUNTEER? For full details go to www.grange-rotary.club.

To register online (from 14th January 2019) email [email protected].

To register in person there will be a registration morning at Grange Library on Friday 18th January

50 years of Slimming World2019 will mark the start of 50 years since Slimming World was first started in the UK and since then many people have gone on to lose weight successfully, eating healthy meals that they can share with their whole family. Here in Grange over Sands the Wednesday groups have so far this year alone lost over 370 stone and 40 people have reached their Personal Target weight, with some of those losing up to 7 stone.

People decide to lose weight for many reasons for example Lisa, our latest Target member wanted to lose weight for her daughters Christening and succeeded whilst still breastfeeding her baby ; Judith joined on her Drs advice to lose 2 stone to help her reduce her Diabetics medication, she lost the weight, has been a target member now for 2 years and not only reduced the medication but is no longer on the at risk register and all the way along she has enjoyed healthy meals. Bob (pictured) also joined because his Dr. wanted him to lose weight and he decided to try to do a sponsored slim for charity. He’s now using Slimming Worlds new 12 week maintenance plan to help him stay at his target weight.

So for our 50th year we are aiming as a group to lose over 500 stone and to get over 50 new Target members. Free membership is being offered at the Grange over Sands Group throughout January just take this advert with you.

ADVERTORIAL

The Eden Project has unveiled its vision for Eden Project North, a major new attraction in Morecambe, Lancashire. The Cornwall-based environmental charity presented new images and details to its northern partners, the Lancashire Enterprise Partnership, Lancaster University, Lancashire County Council and Lancaster City Council.

Eden and its partners successfully completed a feasibility study in September and are now seeking funding to make the project a reality. Central to the vision is a series of pavilions inspired by mussels,

which could house a variety of environments.

The plan is for a destination that combines indoor and outdoor experiences, connecting people with the internationally-significant natural environment of Morecambe Bay while also enhancing well-being.

Its vision of a seaside resort for the twenty-first century includes reimagined lidos, gardens, performance spaces, immersive experiences, and observatories. Eden is working with Grimshaw, the architecture firm who designed its world-famous Rainforest and Mediterranean Biomes, to create this unique structure for Morecambe

with a focus on the marine environment.

A prime site on the Morecambe seafront is the proposed location for Eden Project North. The area was formerly occupied by the Bubbles swimming pool and Dome theatre.

Dave Harland, chief executive of Eden Project International Limited, said: “We’re incredibly proud to present our vision for Eden Project North and hope that the people of Morecambe and the surrounding area are as excited about it as we are. We aim to reimagine what a seaside destination can offer, with a world-class tourist attraction that is completely in tune with its

natural surroundings.

“Morecambe is a unique and beautiful location, perfectly situated near the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales. It’s so heartening to be working with partners who share our ambitions and aspirations for the town and region.”

Eden Project North will be designed to help the regeneration of the area socially, economically and environmentally.

Eden in Cornwall has contributed £2 billion to the local economy and welcomed more than 20 million visitors since it fully opened in 2001.

The Cumberland has won the ‘Best Regional Building Society’ award at the Mortgage Finance Gazette awards, held in London on Thursday 15 November. The title was awarded to the building society offering the most consistently competitive mortgage rates over the previous 12 months, and this is now the seventh time the Cumberland has received the accolade. The award is the business’s second national mortgage award this year, having

been named Regional Lending Provider of the Year by Moneyfacts in June.

Des Moore, chief executive at the Cumberland, said, “To win this award for the fifth successive year is continued proof of our commitment to providing great value mortgages. As the award is based on the actual cost of a mortgage rather than the ‘headline’ rate it recognises the most competitive mortgage provider. Our aim

has always been to offer our customers consistently competitive mortgages and it’s fantastic to see this acknowledged nationally.”

The award marks the end of another successful year for the Cumberland, which saw the region’s largest building society

announce record mortgage lending figures, launch its pioneering ‘Research Hub’, offering people from the region the opportunity to help shape the future of its branch network, and introduce Freedom, the UK’s first current account for apprentices.

I love adult colouring books - they take me back to a time when life was simpler, and the only pressure was to make sure I stayed in between the lines. Once they’re finished, it seems a waste to have the completed works of art (a phrase I use very loosely) sitting unobserved in the book, so I’ve started to combine them with another love – the art of letter writing – to make creative, quirky envelopes.

It’s so easy to do but adds a bit of hand-crafted charm; just pull the completed page from your colouring book and lay it flat. Next, get a small envelope and open it out completely – you’re going to use this as your template shape.

Place the envelope on top of your artwork, draw around it and then cut out the shape. Be careful to fold along the same lines as the original envelope (I place the envelope on top again to get it spot on) and then you just need to secure the folds closed with some paper glue or double-sided tape.Once you get confident with the colouring, you can start free-handing your designs onto standard envelopes. The magical world of ‘envelope art’ awaits.

Last year a friend bought me some Single Brush Pens – they’re a cross between a felt tip and a paintbrush – with a single colour per pen. I also love the Water Brush Pens, which you fill with water and use like a standard paintbrush with a small palette of watercolours, but without the mess. They’re perfect for doodling in front of the telly. Both are by MozArt and are available from Youdell’s Art Shop in Kendal.

If you’re looking for inspiration head online to Pinterest – my personal favourites are the artistic epistles of Naomi Bulger.

Quirky Envelopes

Last month we reported that Jane Pape was the worthy winner of Grange Art Society’ Millennium Prize. She now has lovely plans for this painting which we would like to share with our readers. Jane told us, “I would love to sell the painting to raise funds for a family in Malawi. My late husband’s Grandfather, Rev. Charles Stuart, physically made the bricks to build the Church at Ekwendeni, and was remembered with affection and respect by some of the Elders still there when I got in touch after my husband died in 2000. As a memorial to him and my late husband, I was given the name of the widow of one of the Church’s Pastors, who had died suddenly of a diabetic coma, leaving his young wife with 5 small children and no income in one of the poorest countries in the world. Over the years I have been able to send small financial gifts, but recently heard that the eldest daughter cannot now afford to complete her final year in University, and they are struggling for the youngest child to finish his Secondary Schooling. Lusia’s battles to educate her children have been epic. How they Value Learning!“Lusia’s only income is from selling milk and calves from

her 5 cows and each time she has to sell one, e.g. to repair her roof, there is less milk to sell. I used to have a smallholding with goats and Jersey cows ‘Katy’ and ‘Amy’ so it seems a ‘natural’ for me to ‘buy’ a cow, which Lusia would then of course, keep! And if I can also use my gift of painting for someone else to enjoy, and to raise some money, it would be wonderful!“Brian Edgar will be framing the picture and The Beach Hut Gallery have very kindly agreed to display it for viewing after 6th January during their Friday and Saturday opening times of 10.30am – 4.30pm (www.thebeachhutgallery.co.uk )The price of a cow is £160.00 and that is how much I would love to sell the painting for.”Jane then plans to add her own financial contribution to cover fees.

ART & MUSIC

The cast of Grange Amateur Operatic Society Youth Section’s recent production of ‘Robin Hood and Babes in the Wood’ recently led a Carol Service at the URC/Methodist Church, telling the story of the birth of Jesus through Bible readings, meditations and song.

Following the service, the youngsters presented £1,000 in cheques to the following charities: Jigsaw Children’s Hospice, Christian Blind Mission, Youth Trust Project Trust for Zoe Webster’s trip, Action for Children,

King George V playground at Allithwaite, Flookburgh Recreational Trust, and World Vision.

Fun and food followed the presentations with parachute games enjoyed by children and adults alike. The young people and the team involved with the Panto’, wish to thank all members of the public in Grange and surrounding district for their wonderful support. They wish you all a very happy New Year.

Once again Panto give generously...oh yes they did!

Monday 14th January is the date the rehearsals begin for the Spring Term of Cartmel Choral Society. Registration will take place between 6.45 to 7.15pm at Cartmel Village Hall. The fee of £35 per term remains unchanged from 2018.

The Spring Concert will be held at the Cartmel Priory on Saturday, 16 April 2019 starting at 7.30pm. This year they will be performing Hiawatha`s Wedding Feast and a selection of English

Part-songs.

If you would like to go along new members are always given as warm a welcome as established ones. Why not make 2019 the year you give choral singing a try. The group is happy for anyone to go along and give it a try before committing themselves.

Exciting news - Grange Drama is going on air for the local hospital listening network. The scripts of two mini playlets are now available for our use: Girl Fishing by Martin Chambers and The Skunk Block by Miles Blanch. Thanks to the generosity of both these playwrights, permission has been granted to record their work & Grange Drama’s Radio Project, in the form of three workshop/rehearsal nights, starts this month with the ultimate recording session following on in early February. These Thursday practice nights will range in style from the informal to the more microphone orientated formal occasion.

The workshop recording schedule will run as follows:

Workshop One: 7.30 pm Thursday 24 January 2019 at 7.30pm. This will be held at Grange Grange Institute, Main Street, Grange. Reading material, characterisation discussions, followed by the casting of ‘characters’ according to voice ranges required. Scripts will be handed out as casts need to familiarise themselves with the material in

advance of workshops Two and Three.

Workshop Two: Thursday 31 January 2019 at 7.30pm, again at Grange Institute.

Rehearsals based on expression and timing of lines for radio delivery.

Workshop Three: Thursday 7 February 2019 at 7.30pm this time at Victoria Hall, Main Street, Grange. Set up and assist the production team who will be working behind the scenes on the technical aspects and mechanics before the actual recording session takes place later the same evening.

Would you like to go ‘on air’? Please get in touch with Jim Robson or Bob Somerset if you are up for reading a part, want to join the ‘hands on’ players team or have previous experience of radio work, to let them know of your intentions in advance. Market review and forecast

2018 is behind us so let us take a moment to review the past year and look to the next. The property market can divide opinion and potential uncertainty can have a detrimental effect. However, there are encouraging signs that the property market is, and will continue to be buoyant. At Poole Townsend, we found the last twelve months to be especially productive and successful, selling a total of £105.7 million worth of property. The local market trends showed an increase in the number of new properties to the market but a decrease in the number of property sales completions when comparing this year to 2017. With Poole Townsend leading the sales charts in every location in which we have sales offices means that we have been responsible for 27% of all completions in the South Lakes and Furness areas within the last twelve months.Obviously, the need to instruct the right agent to sell your home is still of paramount importance. You want to know that when your property comes to the market there is a higher chance of it selling. The local average for other estate agents converting new instruction numbers to sales numbers has been recorded at 54.8%. Poole Townsend have achieved an average instruction to sales ratio of 81.4% in the same period, meaning you are 26.6% more likely to sell your property if you choose to market with Poole Townsend.Choosing the right agent is also important when it comes to the perceived pitfalls in the property market. The B word is creeping into more and more conversations and

the overriding question is ‘How is Brexit going to affect the property market?’ As far as we are concerned the signs for the upcoming year are positive. Both financial and property experts are forecasting significantly different impacts dependant upon the area of the country you are in. RightMove are predicting property prices to drop in the London and surrounding commuter belt area by up to 2%. However, in a reverse of fortune, there are expectations that asking prices in the North will increase between 2-4%.RightMove director Miles Shipside also went on to say about the coming year that “Whilst uncertainty traditionally deters some discretionary movers, particularly at the high end of the market, there are many would-be buyers and sellers who will be getting on with their livesand will be keeping the market moving.”Looking back at the last twelve months average marketing prices and average sales completion values we can certainly agree with these sentiments. Poole Townsend have seen a 3% increase in both average asking prices and average sales prices, maintaining our 97% offer agreed to asking price ratio. This further cements the fact that the local property market is alive and well. There will be plenty of scaremongering in the upcoming months but once again the Great British public have carried on with life regardless. The signs of an active market and a productive 2019 are set in front of us and Poole Townsend for one are prepared to make the most of these exciting times. Please feel free to speak with one of our property experts if you have any questions about the past year or coming months.

SCHOOL REPORT

The noblest art is that of making others happyThese are the words of PT Barnum and the pupils of Cartmel Priory School achieved this in spades with the performers and audience alike delighted by the latest production, The Greatest Show. Barnum invited you to The Greatest Show and promised you would ‘Come Alive’! PT Barnum (played by Holly B-B) guided you through the story of how he created his first attraction, from the moment when he was a young boy (Michael W) and met his future wife, young Charity (Nerissa B).Then with the support of his sidekick, O’Malley (Tom S), wife Charity (Martha R) and children Caroline and Emily (Libby E and Emily-Kate U), and Phillip Carlyle (Max B and Joe W), the ‘Million Dreams’ looked like they could come true. The strange collection of brave and bruised oddities played by Faye H, Amos R, Luke F, Thomas P , Lucy G, Jake R, Euan A, Becca M, Austin H, Darwin H, Alicia C, Joe J, Isabel W, Lara C, Alex R and Becky McC rightfully claimed every word of ‘This Is Me’.The songbird, Jenny Lind (Keresa W) wowed everyone with a beautiful rendition of ‘Never Enough’. Even Jameson (Corey B), the local thug, tried his best to bring an end to this story but with the help of the supporting cast (Ellie D, Charlie R, Tate J, Douglas McC, Matthew O, Katie P, D’arcie F, Lily D,

Emily P, Sophie J, Rachel G, Alice K, Paige B, Evie R, Kama D, Libby H, Grace L, Clara McD and Ella R-T), this was not the case.As Barnum himself said “No one ever made a difference by being like everyone else” and it was a joy to see the variety of talents brought to this production from those on stage to the backroom crew. You were amazing. Thanks to everyone for putting this fantastic show together. May we also take the opportunity to wish our school community a Happy New Year and all the best for 2018! And as for next year...who knows?

It was standing room only at Cartmel’s beautiful Priory in mid-December as children from the school performed their entertaining version of the Nativity story ‘in the round’. All pupils had parts to play, contributing to a wonderful performance directed by teachers and supported by parents, who produced some very creative costumes! The Nativity kicked off our Christmas celebrations, which also included class parties, Christmas Jumper Day, a special festive lunch and Christmas storytelling with Reverend Nick Devenish. We were also delighted to win a prize in the Priory’s superb exhibition of decorated angels: thank you to everyone who voted for our entry, which was brilliantly designed by three of our older girls. Earlier in December, our hard-working ‘Friends’ group organised the first ever Santa Dash: 2km and 5km races through the woods around Cartmel. It was a great success despite lashing rain and low temperatures, and produced the magnificent sight of dozens of people jogging in Santa hats and coats! Runners warmed up again afterward with mulled wine and cake. The Santa Dash raised more than £300, which will be put towards valuable school activities, and we now hope to make it an annual event.

The Christmas season has been a busy and exciting time. The children have made all the decorations for their 7ft Christmas tree, enjoyed wearing Christmas jumpers and are looking forward to their Christmas Party.Through a variety of activities, including staging a Nativity Play, the children have learned the Christmas Story. They will be performing their Nativity play for the residents at Boarbank Hall

and again for their families and the pupils at CartmelPrimary. The children were invited to and much enjoyed Cartmel Primary’s excellent Nativity “Straw and Order” which was performed in The Priory. We have also taken time to think about those less fortunate than ourselves and have added contributions of food to the food bank at the Priory. We wish Grange Now readers a very Happy Christmas and New Year.

This month at Allithwaite it has been all about celebrating our skills and talents. We have enjoyed a Christmas music concert in St Mary’s Church where we listened to our children performing guitar, flute, and keyboard. It was incredible to see the children’s progress since our last concert. Some children performed solos and even when they made a mistake, each child had the courage to carry on and finish their pieces. Resilient learners. Smiles all round.Christmas really began this week: Our younger children – aged 3 to 7 years old – performed their Nativity ‘A Tale of Two Birthdays’ for an enormous audience. It was a production with an abundance of variety. We watched excellent acting, incredible dances, and wonderful singing. Each child, even the very youngest, had the confidence to get up on stage and do their part and we are all so proud of them. The spectators wrote some heart-warming comments which the children have enjoyed hearing and the older children made celebrative cards which they presented to their Buddies today. So important to take time to stop and celebrate the special moments and not get caught up in the rush of life. Next month we will have our KS2 production of ‘Oliver’ to tell you all about!

Staff and Pupils at Grange C of E School would like to thank the kind and generous volunteers who have helped in many ways over the year; we wish them a Happy New Year! We are lucky to receive such great support from our community and we very much appreciate it. The end of term was an exciting one with our Reception/KS1 Nativity Play ‘Prickly Hay’ helping to show the true meaning of Christmas. The catchy tunes and carefully chosen words helped to explain the story and gave all our children the chance to shine. The school band performed for a variety of audiences including the Blind Society and the Lunch Club at Thornleigh, enjoying the opportunity to meet new people and share their talents. Our school hall looked beautiful

with a lovely tree; thanks to Holker Hall for their donation. The Y3 children have enjoyed making designs for stained glass windows to represent the Christmas Story.

Grange Primary

Lindale Primary School finished the term with our whole school production of Robin Hood the musical. The children rose to the occasion with very enthusiastic singing, great acting, and some word-perfect lines. The youngest children entertained us all with their woodland animal scene. Parents had also made some wonderful costumes for all the characters. Friends of Lindale School provided the refreshments and held a raffle. This was generously supported by local businesses. We also held our annual Nativity Service in St. Paul’s Church; this year combining it with learning about Christingles. Pre-school Nursery also held a Christmas singalong for parents and everyone in school– they were amazing and joined in brilliantly. They have been creating their own Nativity display and re-telling the Christmas story. Nursery also had a lovely time when Nic from Barrow Owl Sanctuary came to visit and as part of outdoor learning have been hunting for dragons. We look forward to the new term with exciting new topics and things to learn.

ADVERTORIAL

We currently have a 1955 Standard 10 awaiting auction. It has inspired a spot of research into mid-century motoring, when there were 30 million fewer cars on the UK’s roads and this affordable classic was also the winner of the RAC Rally, driven by Jimmy Ray and Brian Horrocks.

The car had a top speed of 69mph and took 38 seconds to accelerate from 0-60, but Standard’s slogan, ‘Count Them on the Road’ is testament to their popularity and they were certainly a common sight on British highways.

Perhaps our favourite find is this Motorsport Magazine review, which suggests the priorities of our motoring past weren’t dissimilar from those of our motoring present:

“It belongs to that admirable breed of post-war small cars which perform well…and yet offer economy of running which is an essential to many owners in this age of savagely-taxed petrol.”

“It’s that most wonderful time of the year”Local youngsters across all the schools put on fabulous performances to bring the Nativity story to life in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Congratulations and well done to all the staff, pupils and helpers.

December was all about Christmas! Our children have performed two very different festive productions: our Early Years / KS1 Nativity and the KS2 ‘Primary School Christmas Musical’. We held our Nativity in the church, and it was fantastic to see so many parents and extended family members supporting us. The children retold the arrival of Jesus brilliantly, and even the bits that didn’t quite go to plan only made us smile and laugh more! The KS2 production was all about what could go wrong in a school play, so of course, all the mishaps were intentional (honest!).

To celebrate the end of our whole term learning theme of ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’, we held a Winter Market in our hall to sell lots of crafts we have been making across the term. We had calendars, candles, snowmen, cookery books, wreaths, plants and many more items on sale, the vast majority of which were snapped up by impressed parents!

We also had a special visitor in December: Tim Farron MP joined us to officially open our extended teacher-led Nursery provision, starting in January 2019.

Before we broke up, we also managed to squeeze in our annual Stories around the Christmas Tree, a whole school trip Panto trip to see Snow White, Christmas parties and our end-of-term Carol Service.

16 | JANUARY 2019 - Next deadline 18th JANUARY

NATURE & GARDENING

The cold and dark of January can be as miserable as any hangover, but it brings lengthening (hopefully warmer) days and you should try and harness that New Year’s resolve and knock out a few jobs at your allotment. Anything you’ve overlooked or fallen behind on now’s the time to get on top of it. It also helps that January is seventeen times as long as all the other months in the year put together. It’s a great time to prune apples and pears; I like to wait until after a couple of good frosts so that you can be sure the tree is dormant and the worst of the lurking bugs and diseases have been killed off by the cold. If you need to get up a ladder make sure one of your allotment buddies is about to ‘foot’ the ladder or worst case scenario catch you!

Onion seeds can be planted in the greenhouse or on a windowsill now, to be planted out later on in the year.

Whether you dig or just mulch it’s a good month to get on with it.

The work will keep you warm and maybe an early start on getting your body ‘beach ready’. Wait for a dry frost-free day as working in these conditions can damage soil structure, you can minimise this by working on boards or running wheelbarrows along planks of wood, cut some grooves into the surface so they don’t get too slippy.

You could also try making a Bean trench, this will accommodate your runner beans when it’s time to plant them out. Runner Beans love rich soil which you can provide by digging a shallow trench a spit or so deep and filling it with shredded newspaper and rough compost and items that you’d generally put into your compost heap, vegetable peelings, leafy weeds etc. It’s worth throwing a bit of manure in there as an activator as well, then when it’s full, cover it over and the trench contents should break down in time for when you plant your runners out in May.

Check your tools, when starting out on an allotment there can be a tendency to accumulate tools and for people to hand them on to you, scrutinise your tools honestly if there are any that you haven’t used this year consider whether you really need them. Consider pooling things that you use infrequently with other allotmenteers, swap ideas, chat, save a few quid, and start the year positively.

GROWN WITH RANDOM LOVE

Perfect The

Plot

January is one of the most important months for me. Not because of the New Year celebrations, but, to me, it is like a clock that needs re-setting or winding up. For the younger ones I mean change the batteries or re-boot!

It’s a sort of re-start for the countryside, as dormant seed start to split and put out their first exploratory roots out to try and get a foothold on life itself. Buds begin to swell in anticipation of warmer, longer and brighter days. Small signs of future life can be detected for those who notice, giving hope of new life and the possibilities it may hold. We still do have dark mornings and miserable weather, but in secret, life is getting ready to emerge as new. Another season waiting to burst into life. The birds are a little more vocal as they start to look into finding a mate and a territory to raise their young. The occasional butterfly can be seen on a warmer day as it emerges from its winter bedroom in search of some

sweet nectar.Once again life and death will play out day by day, month by month until once again the signs show themselves and things start to slow down as we near another autumn, and eventually giving way to winter. Unstoppable, unpredictable, but the cycle of life once more comes around for many, and eventually for all. I look forward to a new season and what it may bring. But will miss what has passed before. The sights smell and sounds of last season. But they will not be forgotten. It is just as well I write these articles in the hope they might inspire to take a little closer look at nature and the wider environment. Basically, it is a written record and who knows? Possibly a whisper into the future.Happy New Year to all.Tony Saunders, Hon. Reserve Manager, Brown Robin.

It’s always great to buy locally produced goods

On the last Saturday of each month in Newton in Cartmel Village Hall, from 10 am till noon, residents from the local community - including outlying districts such as Field Broughton, Ayside, Barber Green, High Cark as well as High and Low Newton, bring things they’ve made or grown to sell.

A spokesperson for the group told Grange Now, “We encourage everyone to at least take their expenses or more and just give a small donation to Hall funds. Some folk have their own stall, others contribute to a communal stall. The emphasis is on it being a community event, rather than fundraising. People come together to browse the locally produced goods and enjoy a cuppa, and some homemade cake - again, just for a small donation.

“The amount of talent shown in the range of goods is staggering: bread, all manner of cakes and biscuits, wood turning, eggs, sewing, chocolates, bird boxes, painted rocks, pickled eggs, chutneys, jams, granola, decorations and wreaths, soups, greetings cards, honey, warm sausage rolls fresh out of the oven (meat kindly supplied by Airey’s Farm Shop!), locally caught trout, pate, curries, aoli, ‘plants, vegetables, fruits and mushrooms...to mention just a few!

“Everyone pitches in to serve teas and coffees and, of course, wash up! Essentially the event runs itself and the atmosphere

is delightful each time. The population has grown a lot since we started a year and a half ago and we now have around 70 - 80 regulars. We welcome everyone. If anyone would like to have a stall, best let us know beforehand so we know how many tables to lay out!”

If you would like a table, contact Wendy Welburn on [email protected] otherwise just go along and enjoy some locally produced goods.

Wainwright Animal Shelter needs a new home Over the past 18 months, Trustees of Animal Rescue Cumbria have gone through a process of strategic planning and options appraisal in relation to capital investment in the land, buildings, and facilities which the charity holds as assets in pursuit of its main charitable objectives.

The charity has a strong and loyal following both in the South Lakes and the wider county and has been fortunate to receive legacy income in recent years. Amanda Hall, General Manager said, “Top of our Christmas wish list is a new property from which to run the shelter. We aim to make Wainwright’s shelter sustainable and accessible so that we can continue to support pets and their owners in the county, as well as offering innovative educational opportunities to our community.” For more information, you can contact Amanda by emailing amanda@animal rescuecumbria.co.uk or by ringing 07789 117401.www.animalrescuecumbria.co.uk/how_you_can_support_us/donations/

Celebrating our 50th year

URC and Methodist ChurchWe were blessed with youth-led services at the joint URC and Methodist Church service on Sunday, 16th December. In the morning, the Toast Church held their nativity production. They showed the differences of the Christmas story in the gospels of Mark and Luke, acting out the story, with a very persistent donkey, determined to get in on the act. The play was written and produced by Paul Rand, husband of the Methodist minister. The congregation played the multitude of angels, and all sang the familiar Christmas carols, with gusto.

In the evening, the children of the Grange pantomime group led the service, with the familiar bible readings, and comments of the main characters, interspersed with wellknown appropriate carols. Afterwards, everyone was invited to a buffet supper. During this time, cheques were distributed to various charities. ie, Christian Blind, Eden Jigsaw hospice, Action for Children, and others, totalling £1.000.

Then the children and young people had an exciting time playing games, using a WW2 parachute, and then were all presented with a box of chocolates, donated by a lady who has been a long time supporter of the group.

United Reformed ChurchHere we are at the beginning of another year. Whatever happened to the last one? Well, we certainly celebrated Christmas, with Nativity plays, carol singing, special services, Christmas cards and parties. All to remember the birth of Christ at Bethlehem.

Now we start on a journey through another year, with new experiences and new hopes. May they all be joyful!

Our Women’s Guild start their new year with a devotional meeting led by Mick Malkin on Jan 9th at 2.30pm. Further meetings will take place each Wednesday. Everybody welcome.

All the Best for 2019.

Tottlebank celebrates 350th birthday In 2019, Tottlebank Baptist Church will be celebrating 350 years since its founding in 1669!! Charles 2nd was on the throne, it was a time of great religious upheaval and dissenters from the Established Church of England were not allowed to meet inside a 5mile radius of a Parish Church. Hence the remote rural setting of Tottlebank Chapel. (LA12 8HY) One possible meaning of Tottlebank may be ‘The Lookout bank’.

We plan to hold a series of special events throughout the warmer months and would love you to celebrate with us, be you of any denomination or just interested in the story of this, the oldest Baptist Church in the historic County of Lancashire, the ‘Church beyond the Sands’. Details will appear in Grange Now in due course. www.Tottlebank.org.uk

St Paul’s ChurchOur Christmas Fair was a great success, despite the terrible weather. Some 350 people visited the various stalls and ‘café’ and helped us to raise almost £2000 for church funds. Our thanks to everyone who supported the event.

The opening of the Christmas Tree Festival was a joyful occasion. The church was full and it was wonderful to see all ages gathered together and to hear the excited chatter of the children. After Tim Farron MP’s opening address, the school choir performed three songs and, following refreshments, the Bay Singers also contributed three songs. The whole congregation joined in a number of popular carols. Around 300 people visited the Festival during the first week. Donations from visitors are being split between the church organ restoration fund and Bay Rescue.

We will be celebrating our Patronal Festival with Eucharist at 11.00 am on the 25th January. The service will be followed by lunch in the social in church.

Festival of angelsNone of us could have imagined in January 2018 when Charlotte Mitchell had what she describes as a ‘bonkers idea’ and found herself the beneficiary of great generosity in the form of Jaap Klijn, the village carpenter, willing to make 2 metre high figures, that her Festival of Angels would take on a life of its own. From Backbarrow to Beckside, individuals, businesses, family groups and communities utilised their creative powers to produce a host of angels - out of this world!

Grandpa’s old curtains, Auntie Janet’s pearls, lots of sweetie wrappers, stained glass, (what else?), anything sparkly and an ocean of glue were added to cotton wool, pencil, paint and other creative materials to produce the colourful and imaginative ‘Angelic Host’ on display for ten days in the Priory Church. A magnificent 3 metres high paper-sculpted angel, made by Helen Lawler from The Marshal’s Theatre Company based in the Priory, reigned on high from a transept pillar as a modern-day Gabriel and, with several other angels, has remained in situ over the Christmas period.

Thousands of people from far and wide flocked to view the fifty one angels placed in the newly created open space of the west end, and to vote for their favourite five; and what a difficult task that was, unless, of course, you were one of the pupils from the Montessori Nursery, the Primary School or the Priory School where there was strength in numbers!

The following were declared ‘winners’ at the closing thank you

party after Choral Evensong on 9th December, but, as Charlotte was at great pains to stress, each participant had shown skill, flare and commitment to the project, working together as ‘community’, and bringing to life the words of the angel in the carol: ‘Goodwill henceforth from heaven to men, begin and never cease.’

Best Junior entry: Cartmel Primary School - Might oaks from little acorns grow.

Best Individual/Family entry - Crabtree Creatives - Halfway to paradise.

Best community group entry - Up hill and down dale.

Best business entry and best overall entry - The Mallard Tea Shop - Christmas Quacker

It was a wonderful few days and all profits will be shared equally between Barrow Food Bank (which we support throughout the year) and the Priory Church.

And as for next year...who knows?

Many thanks to Mary Iveson for writing this article.

Although contributions to our Low Sizergh Barn crop for the shop scheme inevitably slow at this time of the year, we do still receive in-season vegetables from local growers who find themselves with a surplus of winter crops. Jerusalem artichokes, in particular, seem to thrive in Cumbrian soil, so we’re sharing a lovely gratin recipe that makes the most of root vegetables. Perfect as a side dish, it could easily be the main feature if served with a generous chunk of artisan crusty bread and Kendal Creamy cheese.

Jerusalem artichoke boulangère

55g/2oz unsalted butter2 onions, finely sliced1 clove garlic, finely diced1kg/2lb 3oz Jerusalem artichokesSalt and freshly ground pepper285ml/½ pint good chicken or vegetable stock

Preheat the oven to fan 180˚C/gas 5 and lightly butter a gratin dish. Melt 30g/1oz butter in a frying pan over a medium heat. Add the onions and garlic and gently fry until soft and golden. Remove from the heat.Peel and finely slice the artichokes. Mix into the onions and season to taste. Arrange the vegetables in even layers in the buttered gratin dish. Add enough stock to reach just beneath the top layer. Dot with the remaining butter and bake in the preheated oven for 50 minutes, or until meltingly soft.

Mountaineer Alan Hinkes’s well-received lecture on 4th December focused on his feat in climbing all fourteen of the world’s peaks over 8000 metres, some of the most dangerous mountains on the planet. Grange WIThanks to all who visited our stall in Victoria Hall on 1 December – we had a very busy day both on the stall and tombola. Our special challenge to guess the number of chocolates in a tin of Quality Street proved interesting with a wide range of guesses. The actual number was 79 and two ladies – Jean and Rose - had the closest guess with 75. Our tree at St Paul’s Xmas Tree Festival was decorated to reflect the carol ‘While Shepherds Watched their Flocks by Night’. We resisted the temptation to add a line of socks but we couldn’t resist the addition of a sheepdog to give it a more Lake District feel. All the trees look wonderful and the opening service was a real treat with the children’s choir and Bay Community Singers performing. We finished a busy and eventful year with a festive meal at Hampsfell House and are looking forward to 2019 with a craft event in January on a Valentine’s theme.

Grange RotaryFundraising for our huge Rise Against Hunger Charity Meal Pack event at Cartmel Priory School on April 13 continues apace. To that end the Mayor, Peter Endsor and Chamber of Trade kindly donated the proceeds of their Christmas raffle to the cause. Peter helped us sell raffle tickets at his stall on St Paul’s car park on 1 December as part of the Christmas in Grange celebrations. The Draw took place at the Hampsfell House Hotel on 12 December with three wonderful hampers being the prizes on the night. A tremendous sum in excess of £600 was raised for Rise Against Hunger and a huge thank you is due to the Mayor and Chamber. The Club had a successful stall in the Victoria Hall for the Christmas Fair, the sale of a range of knitwear and attractive stain glass proving popular. On 5 December our RotaKids from Grange Primary School made their annual visit with teacher Sian Jamieson. A happy atmosphere prevailed when carols were sung around the piano, accompanied by Ray Booth. The following week we enjoyed our Christmas Lunch and, as usual, the Netherwood did us proud. John Kaye kept us all on our toes with his inimitable Chorley raffle.

Grange over Sands Golf ClubOur 2019 Centenary Year Captains, David Bushell, and Pauline Smith have taken up

their duties following our Annual General Meeting held in November. Details of our seven Open Golf Competitions are available on the Club website, www.grangegolfclub.co.uk as are all categories of membership and details of our Quiz nights and other social events. The winning quiz team in December, “We must have beer” was Peter Robinson, Katy, Alan Dunn, and Maurice Wright.Winter golf competitions are being well supported, weather permitting. The Pro’s Open Competitions on December 29th attracted a full field. Following the dry summer our greenkeepers have kept the course in great condition which is much appreciated by members and visitors. The Junior Christmas party was held on Saturday December 15th, 20 juniors and parents played a variety of golf games and challenges in the golf studio. This was followed by a festive feast accompanied by Father Christmas and his helpers. The Christmas lunch was well received by the 75 members and guests who attended, the draw for the Christmas Hamper was made, winner to be announced in the next publication.Festive greetings to all and we look forward to seeing you in our Clubhouse in 2019.

Lindale Bowling ClubA history of Lindale’s ‘new’ Bowling Green. Local historians argue that the present day should be recorded as tomorrow’s history. It was to this end that Sylvia Woodhead started to write. In the 1990s Lindale didn’t have much provision for leisure. But after a meeting in the Top House a few people decided to see there was interest in making a bowling green in Lindale. A public meeting in 1992 showed enough support, so a team of people investigated where a bowling green could be built, not an easy job in a steep village like Lindale. In the end a small group of hard-working individuals constructed the green themselves; a tremendous achievement by. Some of them spent every weekend for three years on the work parties. In 2006 the Bowling Green was officially opened by Tim Farron. Illustrated with photos of the green and its constructors, details of the fundraising events, such as the Grand Auction of Promises and the Fashion Show, this book, complied by Sylvia Woodhead and designed by John Shippen, is on sale for £5 from either Lindale Bowling Association or from Lindale Stores

A snow covered Grange-over-Sands’ bandstand was at the centre of the winning picture when South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) Chairman, Councillor Eric Morrell selected the winning entry on 22 November. The artist of this entry into the exclusive competition to design Councillor Morrell’s official 2018 council Christmas card was Brenda Craven. Eric Morrell said,“Brenda’s painting really captures the essence of Christmas and has such fantastic detail, when I first saw the entries it was the one which really stood out.” He added, “Overall the quality of the paintings was exceptional.”

Grange over Sands Golf Club’s outgoing Lady Captain, Dot Macaulay was delighted to present a cheque for £1,700 to volunteers Anne and Peter who collect for North West Air Ambulance. The money was raised from donations, various fundraising activities throughout the year and also from ‘fines’ from Lady

members landing in the Charity ditch on the 9th hole!Sara Thompson, fundraising organiser for North West Air Ambulance, said of the donation, “We are absolutely delighted with the support from Grange over Sands Golf Club. As a charity, we rely on support of this kind to ensure that we can continue to provide our lifesaving service across the North West and be there for people when they need us the most”.

Tu-whit tu-whooThe head of the Grange over Sands based Arthur John Brogden Freemasons Lodge Chris Band along with lodge members Barry Saunders and Neville Chanin, popped into a meeting of the 1st Grange over Sands Brownies to present a donation of £700 on behalf of the lodge. Unit leader Barb Littlewood (Blue Koala), received the cheque on behalf of the local Girl Guides Grange and Cartmel District group. Barb said of the donation, “The money will be used to buy equipment for use by the district. All of the Brownies and Guides from ages 5-26 years as well as the helpers, are taught CPR. We will now be able to purchase a CPR manikin to help with the training of this important life skill. A projector for shared use is amongst the other

items on the shopping list. We are very grateful to the Freemasons of Grange for their support, it is much appreciated.” The donation was made from the proceeds of the annual fundraising evening held by Arthur John Brogden lodge. Organised by Barry, with support from charity steward Neville, the event this year featured a very well-received Simon and Garfunkel tribute act and an auction. Barry told Grange Now, “The evening has gone from strength to strength. We are committed to supporting local good causes from the funds raised. Last year we donated to St Mary’s Hospice and we will continue to target worthy endeavours in the area as the beneficiaries of the money raised at the fund-raiser. When you see the reaction of those who receive the money and know it is to be well spent it renews your energy and inspires you to start on organising

the next event.” As the Masons were quietly making their exit from the hall they were summoned back into the middle of the room. The Brownies formed a circle around them and expressed their gratitude by according them the highest honour

they could – the salutations of ‘Tu-whit tu-whoo’ which was followed by enthusiastic applause and completed with a flourishing bow.

Dear Editor, We would like to send out heartfelt thanks to Matt and the family at Home Delivery Carpets in Grange. We own Elton Guest House on Windermere Road and after the recent flooding, again, they were kind

enough to let us have carpet for our lounge after ours was ruined in the flood. We can’t thank them enough. It was greatly appreciated. Happy Christmas to all. Liam & Lyn, Windermere Road

Dear Editor,The committee members of the Grange Branch of Cumbria Cerebral Palsy (CCP) were delighted when we were invited to be one of the three be beneficiaries of the Coop Community Fund. The Grange branch of volunteers raises funds locally to support the work of CCP which is a not for profit organisation working in Cumbria with people who have Cerebral Palsy and associated disabilities. The year-long donations by Coop members concluded on 1 November 2018 and a total of £12598 was divided between the three nominees. The Grange branch received £4195 which will be used in South Cumbria by the CCP professional support worker to purchase essential equipment for people who have Cerebral Palsy, and their families, to enable them to continue living confidently and safely in their own home for as long as possible Imagine our delight and surprise

when the Coop Community Fund team in Manchester contacted us last August to suggest we apply for a second time for the funding round that started last month. We feel privileged to have a second opportunity to raise money to assist the CCP support worker to continue her work in our locality. We would like to thank Grange Coop manager Gill White and her team, and the many Coop members who selected the Grange branch to be their beneficiary, for their ongoing support and generosity.

Dear Editor,After some seven years working as the lead graphic designer for Grange now, It is with a heavy heart, I have to bid the good community of Grange over Sands a fond farewell. I take great pride in being a part of taking Grange now from being a black and white 16 page publication, to the full colour 32 pager it is today. This legacy will form the basis of many ‘a yarn’ I will share with my nine month old daughter, whom I am planning to spend more time with. Thank you to the people of Grange over Sands and the Cartmel Peninsula. You have always worked tirelessly for your community from raising funds and volunteering to just sharing a story about times past. This passion along with the never dwindling support from local businesses is what truly keeps the heart of Grange now beating. I must thank MaryAnn for hiring me to nurture your baby, I know I had some very big shoes to fill at the time. And to Chris, the current editor,

who trusted me a lot with taking the magazine forward. As for the rest of the team (past and present): Sharon, Sarah, Lorenna, Tom, Liz, Kerstin and Catherine, who, even during times of high pressure and seemingly non stop photocopy requests we always managed to enjoy ourselves and have a little giggle… This I will miss the most. Glenn.

Grange and District U3AU3A is firmly committed to the idea of keeping both mind and body active. We also like to have fun, be creative and experience new activities. Keeping the mind active and challenged can be achieved by taking part in games. We have several groups which are based on games and the oldest of these is “Countdown”.The British version of the Channel 4 game-show “Countdown” dates back to 1982 and is based on the French version,”Des chiffres et des lettres” (Numbers & Letters), which has been running on French television continuously since 1965. It was the first programme to be aired on Channel 4, was originally produced by Yorkshire Television and is one of the longest running game shows in the world. Contestants are challenged to make the longest word possible from nine

randomly chosen letters; use arithmetic to reach a random target number from six other numbers; and be the first to solve the conundrum, (a nine-letter anagram).

Just as Countdown was the first programme to be broadcast when Channel 4 was launched, so one of the first groups to be set up when Grange U3A was formed in 2000 was Countdown. Interested U3A members contacted the programme’s producer, Damian Eadie in Leeds, who gave helpful advice about the numbers and letters. The teapot in our photograph will be familiar to people who have watched the television programme at some time as the prize given to winning contestants. The U3A group could not afford to buy one but wrote to Yorkshire Television to ask where one of the mugs given to other contestants might be purchased. Imagine their surprise when a large box arrived at the co-ordinator’s house containing a teapot with the compliments of Yorkshire Television.

So for almost 20 years, a Countdown group has met each month to play the game in Grange, sometimes in members’ homes, currently in The Institute on each first Friday of the month at 2pm. Regular meetings have not much of a competitive element; players keep a record of their own score based on the length of words they make from the selection of 9 letters chosen randomly whilst the Countdown clock beats out 30

seconds and, as in the programme, there are games with numbers and a so-called “conundrum” displayed at the end of each round. Discussion of the meaning and validity of words offered, and frequent laughter as rare or ribald words are produced, are regular features - along with refreshments of course. Each year end a “Championship” is held to determine an overall winner who will take the “Winner’s Teapot” home for the next 12 months. New players are always welcome and can just turn up at The Institute, or contact Maureen Gardner on 33055 for directions, or talk to members at the monthly U3A meetings.

More details of U3A’s many activities and groups can be found on the Grange and District U3A website at www.u3asites.org.uk/grange, at Grange Library and on posters around the town.
