HtttBOY ll: THE GOIDtN ARMY WITH

GUIttERMO DTt IORO TIVE IN PERSON!!!

TUES JULY 8, I"Afu1AR

Ihe story of HELl-B0Y is not one that can be easily (let alone elegantly)

maneuvered in your avetage Hollywood Blotkbuster- a demon avenger fiom llell,

his pyrokinetk girlfriend and an ultra-intelligent fish-man work to$thel to save

the world fromin ocultterr0rist organization led by a resunected Rasputin. But

put these elements into the hands of visionary director 6uillermo Del loro (THE

DEVILS BA(KB0NE, PANS LABYRINTH), and the result is not only stunning to

watch, but genuinely humane despite its 0wn incredible inhumanity. As a director,

Del loro! gift for seamlesly weaving together playful and surreal imagery with

shocking realism has created some of the most memorable and inspired frlms in

re(ent hi$ory. And with every fllm he writes, directs andior produtes, his visions

just keep getiing more fantastic. This 5ummer, Htl-[B0Y ll: THE G0LDEN ARMY hits

!ae,nr.and tith Guillelmo on(e again at the helm, it is sure to be one hell ofa

good time. And outofthegoodnessofhis heart, he is personallybringingthefilm

But you better (at(h him now betause he just signed 0n to direct THE HoBBII -so long Amerka, hello New Zealand.

goers are ians of Edgar Wright's luminous zombie send-up SHAUN 0t THE DtAD and

his action-flkk parody H0I FUZZ, but not nearly enough Americans are familiar with

the hilarious BB( show that paved the way for his (as well as his leading men Simon

Pegg and Nkk Frost's) giant leap onto the big s(reen.0riginallypit(hed-as'h ooss

VWMONTE HETLMAN LIVE!WED JUtY 23, RITZWe are honored to welcome a guest who

played a huge role in helping to drag the

American movie industry out ofthe old, bad

stagnant period of Hollywood at its worst

and into the vibrant, expressive period of

the late sixties and early to mid seventies.

I suspect we all know (oppola and Altman

and Scorsese and Ashby - but there's

another towering figure who belongs in that pantheon, and for 0ne night only thatman - Monte Hellman - will be here at the Alamo. From his time in the Roger (orman

school offilm, grinding outfilmsalongside Francis Ford(oppola, Robertlowne,Jack

Hill and others, through hisfirsttriumphs;theso<alled existential westerns RIDE lN

THE WHIRIWIND and THt SHOOTING; and through his most highly regarded frlm - theroad movie to end all road movies, TWO IANE BIA(KT0P, Hellman was right in themiddle of it all with cameras blazing! Very specill thlnks to (horles liewanrc of I luvVideo for naking this event posihle.

THE SHOOTINGDIR. MONTE HELI.MAN, 1967,35MMEven though Hellman has only made a

dozen orsofilms,three ofthem have been

westerns. He dearly l0ve5 the form, even

as he seemingly demolishes it here. A

pose consisting of cowboy Wanen 0ates,

mysteri0us woman Millie Perkins, fashion-

plate bounty hunter Jack Nkhokon and

d0w-0n-the-uptake Will Hutchins track a wanted man through the banen, hostile

desert, Each member of the party seemingly has a mysterious motivation, and theaudience itself has to remain engaged to understand why, While this nanativestrategy was a(claimed as avant-garde by European critics, Hellman later explained

that he simply ripped out ten pages 0fexposition because it slowed things down

too murh.

TWO tANE 8LA(KTOPDIN. MONTE HEtLMAN, 1971, 35MMWhatTHt SH00TING did forthe western, TWo LANE BtA(l(TOP did forthe road movie.

Iwo laconic drag racers, identified only as The Driver and The Mechanic (musicians

lames Taylor and Dennis Wilson) trawl the back roads of America making theirliving by challenging strangers to drag races. They pkk up a female hitchhiker whoimmediately disrupts the harmony of the mobile family unit and then en(ounteranother drag+acing drifter, Wanen 0ates (never better), who they rhallenge to a

rross-country race along Route 66for"pink slipy'aka car titles. That's it. And it3 one

ofthe greatest, purest, most h0nest films ever made.
