Led by senior Gabe Arias-Sheridan with a time of 15:04, the Pilots garnered their third straight league title with a near-perfect team score of 17. Other Pilots who placed were twins Michael and Matthew Murphy (15:39 and 15:42 respective- ly), freshman Cooper Teare (15:44), and senior Chris Melendez (16:15). In the women’s race, the Pilots’ Veronica Aguila finished in 18:41. The next event on the road to back- to-back California Interscholastic Foundation cross-country champi- onships for the Pilots was the North Coast Section (NCS) Championships on Saturday, Nov. 23, at Hayward High where the Pilots won its third state Division V section title. Arias- Sheridan (15:03, second place), Michael Murphy (15:30, fourth), Matthew Murphy (15:30, fifth) and Teare (15:32, sixth) all finished in the top-six individual times. The men’s cross country team finished with 29 points, the team with the lowest score wins, for the title. Aguila had the fifth fastest individual time among women with a time of 18:53. The Pilots will now compete in the state championship on Saturday, Nov. 30 at Woodward Park in Fresno. Sun Staff Reports The College of Alameda (CoA) women’s volleyball team stretched its league record to 12-3 on the sea- son after a tough 3-2 win over Yuba College of Marysville on Friday, Nov. 15 on the road. The five-set match was a battle worthy of two of the top teams in the Bay Valley Conference (BVC). The Yuba Forty-Niners took the first set 25-19. The Cougars rebounded to win the second set 25-23. The two teams traded the third and fourth sets with Yuba winning 25-22 and CoA winning 25-23 respectively. The game came down to the final and deciding fifth set and the Cougars crushed its opposition 15-6. “To defeat a very good team like Yuba College twice this season, is a very positive step forward for the Cougar women’s volleyball team,” said CoA head coach Linda Thompson. “To win this match on the road makes it more meaningful because Yuba very seldom loses a home match. It took a tremendous team effort from every player to bring the victory back to College of Alameda.” The Cougars recorded 62 kills on 162 total attempts and nine ser- vice aces. On defense, the Cougars collected 90 digs, put up 12 blocks (ten solo and two assists). Four Cougar players recorded dou- ble-doubles including sophomore outside hitter Eboni Green who recorded her team-leading 12th double-double of the season with her match-high 19 kills and a team- best 29 digs. Green posted a .341 hitting clip and would also score the final kill for match point in set five. Sophomore outside hitter Emily Carver pounded 15 kills along with 16 digs for her fifth double-double on the season. Carver added two services and two solo blocks. The Cougars finished off its regular season with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-18) sweep of Contra Costa College last Tuesday, Nov. 19. The win moved the Cougars overall record to 19-7 on the season. The Cougars strong season earned recognition from its con- ference. Four CoA players were named to regular season all-confer- ence teams.
