SJND Wins Tri-County ChampionshipPhoto and Story by Jackson Sundheim
The St. Joseph Notre Dame High School (SJND) men’s cross country team (pictured above) won the Tri-County Athletic League champion-ship title on Nov. 8 at Point Pinole Regional Park. Led by senior Gabe Arias-Sheridan with a time of 15:04, the Pilots garnered their third straight league title with a near-perfect team score of 17. Other Pilots who placed were twins Michael and Matthew
Murphy (15:39 and 15:42 respective-ly), freshman Cooper Teare (15:44), and senior Chris Melendez (16:15).
In the women’s race, the Pilots’ Veronica Aguila finished in 18:41.
The next event on the road to back-to-back California Interscholastic Foundation cross-country champi-onships for the Pilots was the North Coast Section (NCS) Championships on Saturday, Nov. 23, at Hayward High where the Pilots won its third state Division V section title. Arias-
Sheridan (15:03, second place), Michael Murphy (15:30, fourth), Matthew Murphy (15:30, fifth) and Teare (15:32, sixth) all finished in the top-six individual times.
The men’s cross country team finished with 29 points, the team with the lowest score wins, for the title. Aguila had the fifth fastest individual time among women with a time of 18:53. The Pilots will now compete in the state championship on Saturday, Nov. 30 at Woodward Park in Fresno.

small businesses thrive — which in turn helps your local community thrive. By shopping or dining at a small business, you’re not only show-ing your support for small businesses but you’re also reinvest-ing in the communi-
ty you call “home.” Please join the Park Street Business Association (PSBA) and other local busi-ness organizations in supporting your local merchants during this year’s holiday season.
When you start making plans for your holiday shopping, we hope you will think of Alameda’s historic
downtown area first. You can show support for your local mer-chants by making a purchase at one of this week’s featured busi-nesses.

Sun Staff ReportsThe College of Alameda (CoA)
women’s volleyball team stretched its league record to 12-3 on the sea-son after a tough 3-2 win over Yuba College of Marysville on Friday, Nov. 15 on the road.
The five-set match was a battle worthy of two of the top teams in the Bay Valley Conference (BVC). The Yuba Forty-Niners took the first set 25-19. The Cougars rebounded to win the second set 25-23. The two teams traded the third and fourth sets with Yuba winning 25-22 and CoA winning 25-23 respectively. The game came down to the final and deciding fifth set and the Cougars crushed its opposition 15-6.
“To defeat a very good team like Yuba College twice this season, is a very positive step forward for the Cougar women’s volleyball team,” said CoA head coach Linda Thompson. “To win this match on the road makes it more meaningful because Yuba very seldom loses a home match. It took a tremendous
team effort from every player to bring the victory back to College of Alameda.”
The Cougars recorded 62 kills on 162 total attempts and nine ser-vice aces. On defense, the Cougars collected 90 digs, put up 12 blocks (ten solo and two assists). Four Cougar players recorded dou-ble-doubles including sophomore outside hitter Eboni Green who recorded her team-leading 12th double-double of the season with her match-high 19 kills and a team-best 29 digs.
Green posted a .341 hitting clip and would also score the final kill for match point in set five. Sophomore outside hitter Emily Carver pounded 15 kills along with 16 digs for her fifth double-double on the season. Carver added two services and two solo blocks.
The Cougars finished off its regular season with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-18) sweep of Contra Costa College last Tuesday, Nov. 19. The win moved the Cougars overall
record to 19-7 on the season. The Cougars strong season
earned recognition from its con-ference. Four CoA players were named to regular season all-confer-ence teams. Green and Carver were named to the BVC first team along with eight other players. Christina Curry was named to the BVC sec-ond team with five others and fresh-man Jasmine Cruz was named to the BVC honorable mention team.
The Cougars are now gearing up for the California Community College Athletic Association Women’s volleyball regional tour-nament now that the regular sea-son has come to an end.
The Cougars had no easy task in the first round. The Cougars are the 16th seed out of 16 teams so they took on No. 1 seed Cabrillo College of Aptos Tuesday, Nov. 26, in the first round. (The game took place after deadline.)
This marks the Cougars’ first-ever appearance in the “Sweet Sixteen” tournament.
