Pedal Beach!South Shore Center is tickled pink at the success of Pedal Beach, a bike, towel, umbrella and beach accessory kiosk that opened in the parking lot across from Crown Beach this summer.

While Coney Island serves up its famous amusement park hotdogs and Galveston, TX

shows off its fancy Schlitterbahn Waterpark, Alam-eda can now boast about its newest contribution to American beach culture. With this summer’s open-ing of Pedal Beach, Alameda residents and visitors can quickly and easily rent Electra beach cruisers, tandem bicycles, Madsen cargo cycles and Taga stroller/bike combos for a day of cycling and beach exploration.

Pedal Beach also offers umbrellas, towels, bags, sand toys, sunscreen, snacks and even a safe place to stash your stuff while you enjoy a day at the beach. You’ll find their kiosk in the parking lot at South Shore Center, right across from Crown beach on Shore Line Drive. Pedal Beach is open seasonally. Visit Facebook.com/PedalBeach or call (510) 303-8823 to learn more.

We’ve all been there: standing in a fancy department store salivating over an amazing pair

of shoes, hardly daring to peek at the price tag. At DB Shoes, you’ll go from salivating to stocking up because this amazing store sells brand name shoes at up to 70% off retail prices. Their new 10,635 square-foot South Shore Center location carries popular styles by Timberland, Nine West, Rockport, Adidas, Reebok, Crocs, Steve Madden and many more.

This fall, look for great deals on boots, such as the Clarks Chris Perth for women (pictured below) or the Calvin Klein Theo for men. You’ll also find great buys on back-to-school sneakers, including Converse, Reebok and Heely’s. Visit DB Shoes online at dbshoes.net, or call the shop at (510) 373-2705.

The Gold SpotCarl Brown wanted to be a jeweler since he was a kid. When he opened The Gold Spot at South Shore Center, Brown’s lifelong dream became a reality.

As a kid, Carl Brown spent hours roaming the block where his uncle’s barbershop was located. “There

was a Jewish jeweler up the street,” he said. “I became fascinated with him. He gave me an old jeweler’s loupe that I carried with me everywhere. I still have that thing.” Carl had never encountered an African-American jeweler, however. It never occurred to him that he could make a living selling and repairing jewelry, so Carl ended up going into the drapery business. “One day I fell off my ladder and fractured my back,” he said. “I had to reassess my whole career, and I kept thinking about that old jeweler I knew as a kid.”

Carl enrolled in Revere Academy, where he became a certified gemologist. Then, he pestered a jeweler he knew until the man agreed to sell him a 49% share in his jewelry shop. Carl worked for free for a year, learning the business and saving the money he needed to buy into the store. Along the way, he met George, a jeweler in Castro Valley. George has mentored Carl for the past five years. “Most jewelers are second and third generation,” Carl says. “I wanted to prove that a first-generation black guy could make it in the business. I kept my eye on South Shore Center for a year before I found the perfect space. The Gold Spot is my dream job, in my dream location.” Learn more online at thegoldspotjewelers.com or call (510) 522-GOLD.

One of the fantastic things about my job is that I frequently get to see my food heroes firsthand.

I’ve worked with Chef Anne Quatrano, readying the annual James Beard Foundation Sunday Supper event in NYC. I’ve run into Chef Hugh Acheson of Empire State South in the most random places on his book tour. And I’ve gotten to sit front row under moonlit skies and listen to John Edge, director of the Southern Foodways Alliance (SFA), spread the gospel of Southern food culture.

SFA is a member-supported group that documents and maps culinary standard bearers in the South, primarily through oral history interviews. From producing a quarterly print newsletter to publishing interactive maps for finding the best BBQ, boudin, tamales and gumbo, SFA collects and preserves the stories of Southern food so that these culinary treasures are available to everyone.

I first met my great friend Angie Mosier, an accomplished food stylist, writer and photographer, at an SFA event in Nashville. We’ve since roadtripped to other SFA events. Most recently, we watched whole hogs moving down Park Ave on forklifts in preparation for the Big Apple Block Party, where the SFA runs a “peep show” of film shorts throughout the weekend. I now relish working with SFA to bring documentaries such as Cud and The Rise of Southern Cheese to Jamestown developments through events like the Potlikker Film Festival. For more information about SFA, including details on how to become involved, visit their website at southernfoodways.org.

S. Foodways AllianceMan-about-town George Krauth dishes on the fashions, flavors, de-signs and décor he discovers as he travels the globe tracking trends in his capacity as Creative Manager for Jamestown. This quarter, George introduces the Southern Foodways Alliance.

Equipped 4 Success

Imagine having to start school without backpacks, pencils and other basic supplies.

This summer, several local non-profits joined together to sponsor “Equipped for Suc-cess,” a community-wide school supply drive designed to ensure that all Alameda school children have the basic supplies they need for school. Sponsored by the Alameda Education Foundation, Alameda Unified School District (AUSD), Alameda Point Collaborative (APC), Alameda Boys & Girls Club (ABGC) and the Alameda Collaborative for Children, Youth and Families, this year’s “Equipped 4 Success” drive reached its goal of assembling 800 filled backpacks. The filled backpacks are being distributed to low-income students served by AUSD’s McKinney-Vento Homeless Pro-gram (homeless is defined as individuals who lack a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence), APC (serving formerly homeless families), and ABGC.

The “Equipped 4 Success” committee would like to thank Pottery Barn and VF Outdoor for donating hundreds of backpacks. They also thank Jamestown/South Shore Center, Office Max, Peter’s Kettle Corn, and the many Alameda businesses who hosted collection bins. Most of all, they thank you —the Alameda Community. Visit alamedaeducationfounda-tion.org for a full list of participants.

Faces of AlamedaMeet Mark Sorensen, executive director of the Alameda Chamber of Commerce, avid traveller and long-time Alameda resident.

Q. What’s the best thing about being the executive director of the Alameda Chamber of Commerce?A. Working with so many different people, from CEOs of large businesses and the owners of Mom and Pop stores to non-profits and city officials. No two days are ever the same!

Q. How do you balance a desire for quiet island living with a desire to bring 21st century amenities to Alameda?A. It’s tricky, but possible. Take South Shore Center as an example: residents thought that the development of South Shore Center would eliminate businesses in other areas of the city. Instead, it became a compliment to the other businesses.

Q. Is the Chamber planning anything for fall or winter that we should know about?A. Yes, we’re producing the Neptune Beach Community Celebration on October 6 & 7. Formerly known as the Webster Street Jam, the Chamber has tweaked the two-day event to be more of an “Alameda Celebration” with local artists, entertainers, food and wines. Proceeds from this event will be used to promote business development, making this a win-win for all businesses.
