HistoryIn 1959, in Santiago de Chile, a group of businessmen and steel industry representatives from different countries of Latin America met with the aim of founding the Latin American Iron and Steel Institute –ILAFA–, a civil non-profit non-governmental international organization. The motivation of this group was to achieve a sectorial regional integration, as well as create an entity to protect the interests and rights of the steel industry, Ferro-mining and other related companies.
After 52 years of existence, the Institute changed its name to the Latin American Steel Association –Alacero– with the objective of renewing its image and continues to position itself as a relevant actor of le Latin American steel industry and to participate actively in the development of a sustainable society.

It has been rec-ognized as a Non-Governmental International Organization by the Chilean government, which General Secretariat in Santiago of Chile, and acts as a special consultant for the United Nations.
Since it was founded in 1959, the Latin American Iron and Steel Institute has always sought to promote the values of a regional integration in the industry to strengthen and defend interests and rights of steel manufacturing companies. Those are the same values that currently support and have originated the Latin American Steel Association (Alacero).
The new brand now evinces the Steel Value Chain’s contemporary attributes to reflect the concepts of sustainable development and corporate social responsability, and above all the creative a vision of the future to which Alacero is permanently committed.

Alacero is constantly concerned about Latin America having a solid knowledge base for the professional development in the area of architecture and civil engineering as well as in the field of steelmaking technologies and material science.
In the first case, Alacero provides the free download of a series of training and technical materials, as well as pre-prepared theoretical engineering and architecture courses. The updated technical “Specification for Structural Steel Buildings” is also freely available and is dispatched to the standard-setting organizations of the countries of the region with the purpose to improve the security and profitability of the constructions. These standards are particularly important due to the seismic nature of large parts of the region.
The annual Contest of Steel Design for Architecture Students also is a main issue within the initiatives of Alacero encouraging 1000 students to become familiar with new materials and develop creative solutions every year.
Regarding technology and material science, training is provided by disseminating e-learning courses within the successful program steeluniversity and yearly competitions which indirectly promote steel use in the region. At the same time, review articles on techno-logical innovations and a bibliographic overview are published.
All these initiatives are also offered for free to the different academic fields for teachers as well as for research purposes.

SustainabilityEnvironmental aspects and sustainability topics play an important role for the actions of Alacero.
For that purpose a roadmap for the effective dissemination of LCA topics (Life Cycle Assessment) has been established, which includes a general opening presentation and a specific training on this methodology. The aim is to promote this kind of assessment in Latin America, keeping in mind the special characteristics of resources used in the region.
Sustainable construction is one of the strategic areas within the annual plan of sustainability and focuses on different systems of certification of sustainable construction such as LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) which should be taken into account when developing new projects.
Regarding climate change, there has been an active promotion for companies to inform about their CO2 emissions and participate in the surveys of worldsteel. We can note with pride that the Latin American steel industry had a high participation in these reports.
