MEDIA ADVISORY Speed Limit Lowered on Taylor Road (SR271) in Montgomery New Speed Limit between Vaughn Road and East Drive at AUM MONTGOMERY – The Alabama Department of Transportation announced today that the speed limits in one of Montgomery’s busiest areas will decrease beginning Wednesday, March 31, on Taylor Road (State Route 271). Between Vaughn Road and Halcyon Boulevard, the speed limit will decrease from 55 to 50 mph. Between Halcyon Boulevard and East Drive at Auburn University Montgomery (AUM), the speed limit will decrease from 55 to 45 mph. The speed limit from AUM to Atlanta Highway is already 40 mph. New speed limit signs, variable message signs and radar speed limit signs will alert motorists of the changes. The decision to lower the speed limits is based on an engineering study that shows, in part, that most motorists in that area currently drive around 45 to 50 mph. By lowering the speed limit, traffic capacity is expected to increase allowing for a smoother traffic flow. Adjustments to traffic signal timing could also help further improve traffic flow. The average daily traffic volume on Taylor Road ranges from 29,000 vehicles north of AUM to over 41,000 at Vaughn Road. For additional roadway information, visit www.dot.state.al.us.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 30, 2011 ALDOT Announces Resurfacing Project in Prattville AUTAUGA COUNTY – Weather permitting, Thursday, March 31, at 7 a.m., the Alabama Department of Transportation is scheduled to begin a resurfacing project on a section of highway in Prattville. This project would include the planing, two-foot shoulder widening and resurfacing of Highway14 from the U.S. Highway 82 intersection at Chris’ BBQ to Main Street (Hwy. 14) in downtown Prattville, and then along Main Street to U.S. 31 (Memorial Drive). On the portion from U.S. 82 to downtown Prattville, the paved shoulder of each lane will be widened by two feet. ALDOT’s shoulder widening on two-lane state highways has already shown a 15 percent decrease in lane departure crashes, and further reductions are expected as more two-lane highways get this safety upgrade. Work will begin on the U.S. 82 end of the project and once this phase is completed, the Main Street portion will commence. This project should be completed in approximately two months, dependent on weather conditions and work progress. All traffic lanes will be reopened no later than 5 p.m. each day. Once this resurfacing project is completed, plans to resurface Hwy. 14 (Fairview Ave.) from U.S. 31 to McQueen Smith Road are scheduled to begin. Motorists are requested to consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe work zone speed limits and other work zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area.

MEDIA ADVISORY I-65 at Southern Boulevard Exit to Experience Brief Lane Closures Sunday Morning Other Overnight I-65 Work Planned in Prattville Area This Weekend, Into Next Week MONTGOMERY, July 9, 2010 – Brief lane closures on Interstate 65 near the Southern Boulevard exit will cause only minor inconvenience for about an hour Sunday morning, July 11, while workers remove old utility poles as part of the ongoing Progress 65 interstate improvements. Beginning at 3 a.m. Sunday, when traffic flow is a mere trickle, the outside southbound lane of Interstate 65 at the Southern Boulevard exit will be closed. Adequate lanes will be open to handle the light, early-morning traffic without any anticipated delays. From 6 a.m. for up to one hour, all lanes of Interstate 65 northbound and southbound will be closed for the utility pole work. This work will involve cranes and large, heavy poles hoisted over the travel lanes. Workers expect to restore northbound and southbound traffic by no later than 7 a.m., and for workers and equipment to be clear by 8 a.m. This area remains an active work zone, and drivers should expect to encounter construction work and increased enforcement at all times. During the 6 a.m. Sunday interstate closure, drivers should seek alternate routes around the closed lanes. ALDOT has activated its Highway Advisory Radio System to broadcast travel advisory information for this early morning work, and flashing message boards have been deployed to announce the closure and need for using alternate routes. ALDOT’s HARS radio broadcasts along parts of I-65 and I-85 in the Montgomery area on 1690 AM. “This work has been scheduled during the early morning weekend hours to minimize the impact to travelers and local commuters,” said Transportation Director Joe McInnes. “Our ‘Interstate Progress’ project on I-65 through Montgomery is on track for completion by this fall, and soon your patience will be rewarded with a smoother ride. We have other ‘Interstate Progress’ projects under way and beginning soon across Alabama to better serve you.”

This work will also require the two outside, right-hand lanes to be closed, with only the inside, left lane open. Some initial congestion may be experienced, but traffic volumes will decline during overnight hours with the single open lane providing adequate service. This work will be finished up from 6 p.m. Monday to 6 a.m. Tuesday with only the inside, left lane closed. The Cobbs Ford Road on-ramp will not be affected by the overnight work Monday. ALABAMA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 19, 2010

MEDIA ADVISORY Maxwell Boulevard Project Moves Forward MONTGOMERY, AL– The project to widen and enhance Maxwell Boulevard, formerly known as Bell Street, leading to Maxwell Air Force Base, has reached a point that will require two of the four existing lanes to be closed for the next phase of construction to move forward. Commuters will awaken Monday morning to only two lanes on Maxwell Boulevard. This lane reduction will be in place for at least the remainder of 2010, and possibly into 2011, to allow a safe zone for construction workers. Construction crews will be working along the shoulders and in the closed lanes to provide new turn lanes, new sidewalks, decorative lighting and a landscaped median. The area along Maxwell Boulevard has already undergone a transformation with the removal of many old, dilapidated buildings, and a new security fence installed along the perimeter of the base. Officials suggest that base traffic consider using the Kelly Street or Day Street gates to relieve congestion at the main gate on Maxwell Boulevard. Officials also advise that with only two lanes for through traffic into and out of downtown – instead of the four normally available – that the flow of commuter traffic will be slower and more congested than normal during peak travel hours. Downtown commuters may want to consider taking alternate routes or adjusting their travel times. Montgomery police will be assisting with traffic control during the first few days of this new traffic configuration. “We’ll see brief congestion during the morning and afternoon commuter peaks, but getting the word out about alternate routes and what to expect will help commuters adjust,” said ALDOT spokesman Tony Harris. No traffic impacts will be seen during most times of day, when two lanes will handle off-peak traffic volumes without delays. Work to improve Maxwell Boulevard is expected to be completed around mid-2011. The project began in July 2009. The contract amount is $6.8 million. The area where work is being conducted is signed as a work zone with a 30 mph speed limit. ALDOT reminds motorists to abide by all work zone signs and that increased law enforcement may be present.
