Alabama’s Route 77 Converts From Two Lanes to Four
By Cindy RileyCEG CORRESPONDENT
Despite rising temperatures, construction crews are continuingtheir work to upgrade a major cor-ridor between I-59 and I-20 innortheast Alabama. When com-pleted, the stretch of road willmake traveling much easier forrace car enthusiasts, while alsosecuring the state’s reputation as aleader in automotive production.“SR-77 serves as a vital spoke in
the wheel that moves the econom-ic engine in this area of the state byproviding access to manufacturingfacilities and their suppliers,”explained Johnny Harris, first divi-sion engineer, AlabamaDepartment of Transportation(ALDOT). “One of the morenotable is the Honda automobileplant near Lincoln which has sup-pliers and employees located
throughout all of northeastAlabama.“In addition, SR-77 provides
direct access to the TalladegaMotor Speedway, which hostssome of NASCAR’s most presti-gious races attracting thousands of
race car fans each year,” Harrispointed out. Improvements will be made to
SR-77 by converting it from a two-lane roadway to a multilane (fourand/or five- lane) roadway. It hasbeen a phased construction pro-
gram over the past several years. The current project is the latestphase ready for available construc-tion funds. There will be moreprojects forthcoming in futureyears to complete the conversionof the existing two-lanes to a mul-tilane roadway facility as fundingconstraints allow. State Route 77, also known as
SR-77, is a north–south highwayin eastern Alabama that runs fromU.S. Highway 431 near Lafayetteand ends at U.S. Highway 431 justnorth of Attalla. North ofTalladega, it is known to many asthe route that passes the entrance toTalladega Superspeedway, homeof the NASCAR Sprint Cup,Nationwide Series and CampingWorld Truck Series races that areheld annually.
The original route of SR-77 wasestablished in 1940, running fromLafayette to Ashland. By the early1960s, the route was extended toits current boundary in northwest-ern Etowah County. Until 1985,the segment between Talladegaand Lincoln was co-signed asAlternate U.S. Highway 231.The traffic-control plan for the
ongoing construction does not re-route or detour normal trafficaround the project, but provides formaintaining an 11-ft. (3 m) lanewidth in each direction, which dic-tates that wide loads over 11 ft. bedetoured, and normal traffic mayexperience slow flow through theproject at various times. Motoristswill need to be alert to the projectconditions and adjust their travel

schedule to allow for some potential delays.Oversized loads will have their route adjust-ed through their normal permitting processwith the Department.Talladega Superspeedway Chairman
Grant Lynch pointed out that, “Thousands ofrace fans flock to Talladega Superspeedwaytwice a year for our NASCAR weekends.Ease of ingress and egress are major factorsin our customer satisfaction and of high con-cern for us. The improvements to SR-77 willultimately prove to be a benefit for our fans, and we look forward to successful comple-tion of the project.”Mack Ferguson, director of the Greater
Talladega Area Chamber of Commerce, added, “It's great for all our race fans to havean interstate and four-plus lanes of second-ary roads in most of the access areas. Theselanes also make it safer for our fans to get totheir campsites and other entertainment ven-ues in the area. “Our retailers also will appreciate the road
improvements, as the trips from the campingsites to their establishments make it moreenjoyable for their race fan customers. The
fact that we are getting better access in ourarea now qualifies us to be considered bylarger businesses as a regional center thatmeets their requirements for location.” According to ALDOT officials, the SR-77
project contract has a 320 working day timeprovision in it, which amounts to more thantwo calendar years for completion. Theoriginal estimated date of completion wasDecember 2013. McCartney ConstructionCompany of Gadsden, Ala., which special-izes in bridge, tunnel and elevated highwayconstruction, serves as general contractor forthe project.Harris concluded, “Upon completion of
this work, motorists will experience a moreefficient driving environment through thearea by the addition of increased lane capac-ity to the roadway which should translateinto less delay and more safety in the move-ment of motorists, goods and servicesthrough the area.”
