www.AuburnTigers.com 61 by Lynn Mullen he 2009 Walter Gilbert Award will be presented at halftime of the Furman game to former Auburn bas- ketball player, Dr. Ray Groover Jr. The Walter Gilbert Award is given annually to the former Auburn ath- lete who has continued to be recognized for their outstanding achievements after graduation from Auburn University. The award is given in memory of Walter Gilbert, who later became vice president of Texaco’s European Oil Operations. Dr. Ray Groover Jr., a native of Americus, Ga., was a member of the Auburn basketball team from 1958-61. During his stint at Auburn, Groover proved to be as valuable on the court as he was in the classroom. Groover scored double-dig- its in three of Auburn’s 42 most memo- rable basketball games of the Tiger team’s first 100 years. In the 1959-60 season, Groover’s points against Georgia Tech, Kentucky, and Alabama helped lead the Tigers to the SEC title. “Ray is one of the best competitors in Auburn history,” said Buddy Davidson, life- long friend and former Assistant Athletic Director for Auburn. “He was a key compo- nent in the first SEC championship that we won. He really worked hard on his own to become a great basketball player. He played great defense, was a good rebounder, and just a clutch player. Ray took those charac- teristics throughout his life. He knew at an early age that he wanted to become a doc- tor. He has a lot of determination and is very self-motivated. He’s one of the best amateur golfers in the South. Ray’s always been a natural athlete and an unnaturally hard worker.” Groover’s versatility on the court caught the eyes of several NBA teams including the St. Louis Hawks (now the Atlanta Hawks), the Detroit Pistons, and the Boston Celtics. However, having mar- ried his college sweetheart, Betty, Groover was looking for a more stable occupation that would allow him to start a family. In 1962, Groover enrolled at the Medical College of Georgia, the nation’s 13th oldest T he 2 Ray Groover Jr. medical school, where he earned his med- ical degree. Upon graduation of medical school, Groover was drafted into the Air Force. It was in the Air Force that Groover interned under a radiologist, which sparked his interest in the field. Groover then enrolled in the USAF Flight-Medicine program, where he specialized in Radiology. Groover, a Vietnam veteran, and his wife lived in Hawaii from 1966-1969, where he worked as an Air Force doctor. The Groover’s then moved to San Antonio, Texas, where Dr. Groover finished his radi- ological degree at Wilford Hall U.S. Air Force Hospital. In 1972, the couple moved to Homestead Air Force base in Miami, Fla. for one year before Dr. Groover was able to end his career in the service. After the Air Force, Dr. Groover and family moved home to Americus, where he practiced Radiology for four-and-a-half years, before moving to his current home, Birmingham, Ala., in 1979. “He (Dr. Groover) has been a great hero to our whole fam- ily,” said Betty Groover when asked about her thoughts on her husband receiving the Walter Gilbert Award. “We are thrilled, because we cannot think of enough ways to express how spe- cial he is to our family. We’re very honored, and he is so deserving. Ray does things that other doctors don’t, because of his deep love for people and caring nature. He’s been our hero all along, and we are just glad that others have a chance to acknowledge him.” While practicing, Groover performed operations on both President Jimmy Carter and President Richard Nixon. Dr. Groover is now semi-retired, but does continue to practice a few days a month around the Birmingham area. The Groover’s have two daughters, Wendy and Kim, who are both graduates of Auburn University, and three grandchil- dren. Kim, the youngest of his daughters, was Miss Homecoming in 1989, and this year his niece, Grace Ann Sooter, is on the Homecoming Court at Auburn. The 2009 Walter Gilbert Award

Northcutt, the Cliff Hare Award recipient, finished his Auburn golf career with a 73.18scoring average, the eighth-best in schoolhistory. Northcutt is the second consecutivegolfer to win the Cliff Hare Award, after JayMoseley earned the distinction in 2008.

“(Receiving the Cliff Hare Award) is thehighlight to end my career at Auburn on,”said Northcutt. “It’s the highest award anAuburn student-athlete can receive. I havethe highest respect for what student-ath-letes do here at Auburn and to be consideredin that group is extremely special.”

The golf coaching staff sees no better fitfor the Cliff Hare Award than Northcutt.

“The Cliff Hare award is the top overallaward that can be bestowed upon a young

man at Auburn University,” said

Northcutt’s former coach Mike Griffin. “Tobe considered the top student-athlete atAuburn University says a great deal.(Northcutt) has worked hard throughout hiscollegiate career. He has established a veryhigh academic average. He was an outstand-ing competitor through his four years play-ing at Auburn and one of the more outstand-ing people we had in our departmentduring that time frame.”

While on the Auburn golf team,Northcutt qualified for every Tiger tour-nament, was a four time All-SEC TopTiger, was on the 2007 and 2008Coaches All-SEC and All-Region Teamas well as receiving many other top hon-ors for his success on the team.

On the national level, Northcutt qual-ified for the United StatesAmateur Tournament in 2007and 2009. Northcutt advancedto the final 32 in 2009.

Not only has Northcuttexcelled on the golf course, but he has also excelled in theclassroom. He is set to gradu-ate in the spring of 2010 witha degree in business market-ing and has maintained acumulative GPA of 3.51.

When Northcutt wasn’t work-ing on improving his golf game orstudying for his classes, he wasout improving his community byreading to elementary schools, working with food banks and food

drives and working with the Auburn golfprogram to help get young children interest-ed in the game.

For his involvement in the community,Northcutt was named to the 2009 All-SECCommunity Service Team.

After graduating, Northcutt plans on pur-suing his dream as a professional golfer.

Northcutt and gymnast A.J. Mills, exemplifythe best of what it means to be an Auburnstudent-athlete: they strive to better them-selves and their team by competing withcharacter and zeal, they work hard toachieve success in the classroom and theytake time to serve the community. Northcuttand Mills have become role models not onlyfor their teams, but also for AuburnUniversity.

“A.J. is the epitome of a student-athlete,”said Thompson. “Her work ethic in the gym, classroom and community is something that

we hope all of our athletes, present andfuture, will commit to achieving.”

In her Auburn career, Mills achievedcareer bests of 9.925 on vault, 9.900 onbars, 9.925 on beam, 9.875 on floor and39.475 in all-around.

If you played football, what position wouldyou play and why?Abby: “I would definitely play receiver. Ihave played intramural flag football allfour years here at Auburn and that iswhat I am best at. I love the action ofbeing a receiver and I honestly don’tthink I could handle the pressure ofbeing a quarterback.”Grace: “I’m 5’9” and love to run, so nat-urally, I would dominate some specialteams––run as fast as I could and eithercatch or tackle someone. I’m just wait-ing for Coach Chizik to watch me playingflag football and ask me to walk on!”Grace Ann: “I would definitely be a kick-er; I like to avoid conflict!”Christian: “I would be the kicker becausethis position requires intense focuswhile being under pressure, but also it’san essential part of the team. When alleyes are on the kicker, he strives to dohis best, and I am very passionate aboutstriving to be an admirable representa-tive of my team.”Kimmey: “Linebacker, so that I could‘protect this house!’”

How has Auburn impacted your life?Abby: “Auburn has been my home awayfrom home. It has given me a great edu-cation and presented me with opportuni-ties that I never thought I’d have. I havemet my very best friends here at Auburnand I’ve made memories that I know Iwill be taking with me when I leave.”
