Patient at Dera Bughti Eye Camp
Al-Shifa Center for Community Ophthalmology (ACCO) is reputed to conduct one
of the most extensive outreach programs in the country. With mobile teams four
days per week in the field, every nook and corner of underserved areas within 300
kilometer radius are being provided with at the door quality eye care. In addition,
we also established surgical eye camps in very remote corner of the country where
no facility exists. This quarter the ACCO team conducted a surgical eye camp in
Dera Bughti and Sui which are the remotest parts of Balochistan where, total no. of
OPD were 970 and 1220, Operation cases 135 and 175, referred GA cases 12 and
9, and glasses issued 959 and 1050 respectively.
No. of screening camps in this quarter was 37, in which over 8,000 patients were
treated, while 367 patients were transported to ASTEH Rawalpindi where they
underwent modern cataract surgery free of cost.
Al-Shifa Newsletter; Vol. 24, Number 56, June 2013

In collaboration with Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal, ACCO also established eye screening
camp at sports complex Islamabad for the orphans living in different centers
(Pakistan Sweet Homes) and examined 1263 children.
Al-Shifa IT department working hard to make paperless environment
The Information Technology Department of AST is one of the busiest departments
of the Trust. It has worked a lot to provide basic patient information to
administration and doctors in precise and practical manner. It is gradually working
to create a “paperless environment” in which neither the patient, nor the doctor or
admin official has to keep any hard copies of relevant data, rather all the patient
will carry will be a smart card with barcodes which will contain all the
information. In this way, not only logistic difficulties of keeping huge record will
be overcome, but also there will not be any risk of insufficient or lost patient
record. This will ensure easy availability of all the patient data for research and
management purposes.
ASTEH Rawalpindi wins rose competition
AST, as always won the Annual Rose Competition. The Annual Rose festival was
held at Islamabad Club amongst the hospitals of Rawalpindi and Islamabad. AST
lawns proudly present one of the most beautiful varieties of roses. Well done boys!

Patient Column
A 3 years child from a remote village of subdistrict Mailsi, got a serious eye injury
to his left eye while his mother was busy harvesting the wheat crop. The eye of the
child was injured by flower of the wheat. The child was given treatment by a local
specialist, but the condition worsened and the eye ruptured (as shown in the
photograph). That was the end of world for Fazlan, the child’s mother. The doctors
ruled out any treatment. Finally after borrowing some money from her landlord,
the mother brought the child to ASTEH Rawalpindi. “ When I saw the child, I was
not sure for the result. It was a hopeless case to begin with.” Said, Dr. Saima, head
of our pediatric ophthalmology department. The child needed a complicated
surgical procedure as well as a donor graft which has to be arranged urgently. “No,
not fit for general anesthesia, unless the parents agree to take the risk, if surgery is
to be done” declared our senior anesthetist, Mr. Shafiqullah. Between devil and
deep blue sea, the Divine help descended. The donor cornea, by chance, came the
next day and the child eye was repaired after 3 grueling hours of surgery. “Oh,

Christ, it was unbelievable to see the good result at the end. The stitches won’t
stay, the wound opened again and again, but at the end of the day, the eye was
saved” exclaimed the excited Staff Nurse Azika. It was a miracle, but miracles do
happen.
