All welcome, 16yrs+ 07974 388340 / [email protected] www.cerocoxford.com Fish Tank [15] Phoenix Picturehouse: until ursday 15th (see listings, left) Fish Tank is impressive. is film is a clear, compassionate story of confused emotions (and street dancing) in the marshlands of Eastern England – the hinterland where London meets Essex and urban meets rural. Director Andrea Arnold, whose Red Road was set in Glasgow, moves south for her second film. Her jumpy, intimate camera follows 15 year old Mia (Katie Jarvis, discovered by Arnold at Tilbury railway station) around her estate in Rainham, where she lives with her boozy single mum (who barely looks old enough to have given birth to her) and gobby younger sister Tyler (who she constantly rows with). e three women share little more than a taste for supermarket booze, but when Mum’s new boyfriend Connor (Michael Fassbender) comes to stay with them, there is considerable change in the family. From the very first frame – Mia, on her own, in an empty flat in her block, looking out over the flat lands of her manor, the London she sees in the distance no less alien and remote than the moon – Arnold captures with claustrophobic intimacy the rabbit warren like lives of her characters. e use of the square aspect ratio accentuates the closed world the characters live in – if you like, the ‘Fish Tank’ of the title. ere’s an element of Gary Oldman’s late 90s masterpiece Nil By Mouth in the characters’ cramped domestic conditions, but because this is summer in the marshes, Arnold is able to capture rolling skies, flat countryside and choppy rivers and reservoirs alongside the urban squalor. e juxtaposing of concrete and fresh air reminds us that this part of the country may be the back end of nowhere, but parts of it are beautiful. Jarvis and Fassbender’s performances are remarkable, making the sexual tension between Mia and Connor plausible and – crucially – not uncomfortable to watch. It’s played out so convincingly that we barely register the contradictions of the relationship – in fact, we understand only too well the confused thoughts swirling around in Mia’s mind. e scene where she goes through Connor’s wallet is a remarkably subtle piece of storytelling sans dialogue. Arnold has already been compared to Ken Loach. Her concerns are not quite the same as his, but she’s certainly as good as Loach in her own, next generation sort of way. It’s hard to think of a more relevant and enjoyable British film so far this year. George Sawer, 05/10/09 FILM REVIEW Le Donk & Scor-zay-zee [15] Phoenix Picturehouse: until ursday 15th (see listings, left) It’s difficult to do a rock mockumentary without is is Spinal Tap becoming the ultimate elephant in the room, but somehow Shane Meadows has managed it. Le Donk, filmed in just 5 days and on a paltry budget, is gonzo film-making at its most earthy, and shows Britain’s coolest young director isn’t about to go all Hollywood just yet. Le Donk is a roadie with delusions of grandeur. Although his ex partner is pregnant, becoming a father is not very rock and roll, and our hero still wants to live the dream. e film follows him and his new protégé, real life Nottingham rapper Scor-zay-zee, on their trip to work on the Arctic Monkeys’ Old Trafford gig. Donk wants to get Scorz a support slot. Played by Paddy Considine (who used to be in a band with Meadows in the 80s), Le Donk is an interesting comic creation. He’s moody, selfish and crass, but there are flashes of innocence which almost make him endearing. It’s an uneasy tension, but both Le Donk and Scorz – who is bound to become a cult performer on the back of this – are characters rather than caricatures. ere are some brilliantly funny lines, but it’s not a farce, and it felt at times similar to watching e Office – you don’t always laugh out loud because it just seems too real. Neither of them are clowns. So, when Scorz recites a passage of the Qur’an to another roadie at the gig, it’s impossibly awkward but also quite sweet. And when Donk recounts a night out to a Berni Inn with his ex-partner Olivia, played by Peep Show’s Olivia Colman, it serves to somehow redeem him as almost likeable. e attention to detail is interrupted somewhat by what is perhaps the biggest new born baby known to man, and sometimes the script could have been tighter. But it would be wrong to be too critical. I’m not sure many people could achieve as much in their working week, and Shane Meadows continues to create uniquely British films that steer clear of stereotypes and clichés. He’s now added comedy to the mix, and pretty successfully too. Fish Tank [15]Phoenix Picturehouse: until Thursday 15th (see listings, left) Fish Tank is impressive. This film is a clear, compassionate story of confused emotions (and street dancing) in the marshlands of Eastern England – the hinterland where London meets Essex and urban meets rural.

The three women share little more than a taste for supermarket booze, but when Mum’s new boyfriend Connor (Michael Fassbender) comes to stay with them, there is considerable change in the family.

From the very first frame – Mia, on her own, in an empty flat in her block, looking out over the flat lands of her manor, the London she sees in the distance no less alien and remote than the moon – Arnold captures with claustrophobic intimacy the rabbit warren like lives of her characters. The use of the square aspect ratio accentuates the closed world the characters live in

– if you like, the ‘Fish Tank’ of the title. There’s an element of Gary Oldman’s late 90s masterpiece Nil By Mouth in the characters’ cramped domestic conditions, but because this is summer in the marshes, Arnold is able to capture rolling skies, flat countryside and choppy rivers and reservoirs alongside the urban squalor. The juxtaposing of concrete and fresh air reminds us that this part of the country may be the back end of nowhere, but parts of it are beautiful.

The scene where she goes through Connor’s wallet is a remarkably subtle piece of storytelling sans dialogue.

Arnold has already been compared to Ken Loach. Her concerns are not quite the same as his, but she’s certainly as good as Loach in her own, next generation sort of way. It’s hard to think of a more relevant and enjoyable British film so far this year. George Sawer, 05/10/09

FILM REVIEW

Le Donk & Scor-zay-zee [15]Phoenix Picturehouse: until Thursday 15th (see listings, left) It’s difficult to do a rock mockumentary without This is Spinal Tap becoming the ultimate elephant in the room, but somehow Shane Meadows has managed it.

The film follows him and his new protégé, real life Nottingham rapper Scor-zay-zee, on their trip to work on the Arctic Monkeys’ Old Trafford gig.

There are some brilliantly funny lines, but it’s not a farce, and it felt at times similar to watching The Office – you don’t always laugh out loud because it just seems too real.

The attention to detail is interrupted somewhat by what is perhaps the biggest new born baby known to man, and sometimes the script could have been tighter. But it would be wrong to be too critical. I’m not sure many people could achieve as much in their working week, and Shane Meadows continues to create uniquely British films that steer clear of stereotypes and clichés. He’s now added comedy to the mix, and pretty successfully too. Russell George, 12/10/09
