SUMMARY

This report summarizes the assessments, analysis and recommendations for improvements that should be undertaken to set the College of Engineering, Al-Qadisiyia University on a path for education quality assurance of its Engineering programs (Civil, Mechanical, and Chemical Engineering programs).

Phase I: collecting data to assess Engineering Programs.

Phase II: “Gap Analysis” to measure the difference between the current status and the requirements for education quality assurance.

SUMMARY

The college B.S. programs are (Civil, Mechanical, and Chemical Engineering).

The B.S. programs are a four-year programs which require successful completion of about 160 credit hours before graduation.

The program is divided into; university requirements, college requirements and department requirements.

Students in the College are required to complete a sixty days summer training requirement in an area related to their engineering disciplines.

THE ASSESSMENT PROCESS FOCUSED ON THE FOLLOWINGS Program Educational Objectives.• Vision and Mission of each dept.× Program outcomes (a) An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and

engineering. (b) An ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and

interpret data. (c) An ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired

needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability.(d) An ability to function on multidisciplinary terms.(e) An ability to identify, formulates, and solves engineering problems. (f) An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.(g) An ability to communicate effectively.(h) An ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.

THE ASSESSMENT PROCESS FOCUSED ON THE FOLLOWINGS

Curriculum, including a year of basic sciences and mathematics, two years of engineering topics, and one year as a major design experience that uses the knowledge and skills gained earlier.

This report uses the criteria adopted by the Sectorial Engineering Science board at the Iraq Ministry of Higher Education to make judgments of curriculum success for all departments. These criteria are summarized as below:

Total units of study for four years = 140-160. Total hours of study for four years = 3000 - 3600 hours. The number of subjects annually = 7-9 subjects. Total hours of Laboratory to total hours = 25-40%. The proportion of Humanities to Sciences = 5-10%. The proportion of basic science = 10-25%. The proportion of engineering topics = 60-85%.

THE ASSESSMENT PROCESS FOCUSED ON THE FOLLOWINGS Civil Engineering Program Curriculum Review

conclusion to add 3 credit hours of chemistry and 3 credit hours of physics to the curriculum is essential to match the needs of sanitary studies and concrete mix chemistry.

Offices and Administrative Facilities: Classrooms: laboratories The Civil Engineering laboratories are currently outfitted with a

reasonable number and variety of essential equipment (more than 77 apparatus) to enable students to conduct necessary laboratory testing and experimentation. The faculty expressed some shortage of equipment and therefore a need to advance the surveying, soils, and concrete and construction materials labs, such as; • Total Station – 2• Digital Theodolite – 4• DGPS unit – 3

The committee recommends the civil engineering department upgrades its laboratories in preparation to postgraduate studies.

Facilities, including enough classrooms, laboratories, and associated equipment to safely meet program objectives.

Establish a college Education quality assurance steering committee headed by the Dean. Establish set of educational objectives. The objectives must be approved and controlled

by the steering committee. Departments assign 3 people dedicated to the development of the self-study of the

department. Self-studies accomplished by these teams must be submitted to the steering committee for revision and approval.

Develop a plan of improvement for each Engineering program based on the approved self-studies of the departments.

Decide on an advisory board consisting of internal and external members. External members are essential to echo the public perception of the college graduates. The advisory board provides advice and support on the implementation of the program modifications.

Choose international organizations that benefit each engineering department with request for membership (create a chapter).

Establish facilities assessment committee of each department to conduct a review of facilities on annual basis to establish a plan for upgrading, maintenance and safety.

Develop criteria to implement annual faculty review and measure the level of competence through periodic evaluation.

ACTION PLAN. .
