Istianah:We should seek Allah’s help in all affairs, but particularly for worship. Ibn-Taymiyyah said: “I contemplated on the most beneficial du’aa a person can make and found it is seeking Allah’s help upon attaining His pleasure, then I found it in the Fatihah in Allah’s statement: ‘You alone we worship and You alone we seek for help.’”

It is said that the ‘waw’ here has the meaning of ‘whilst’ rendering the meaning ‘we worship only you while seeking your help.’ Qatadah said: “It means to be sincere to Allah in all worship and to seek His help in all of your affairs.”

Ibadah:Worship and being a servant of Allah is the true purpose of our creation. Allah says:

“And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me”

Any action can become worship through the intention, if done with the intent of pleasing Allah. It’s said: “The habitual action of the righteous are worship, while the worship of the heedless are mere habits.”

Defining Ibadah:

Ibn Taymiyyah said: “It (Ibadah) is a comprehensive term that brings together everything that Allah loves and is pleased with, from the sayings and actions, both inward and outward.”

Al-Baghawi said: “Worship (ibadah) is: Obedience (ta’ah) coupled with humbling of oneself (tadhallul), and submissiveness (khudu’). The slave (’abd) is called as such due to his lowliness (dhillah) and his compliance (inqiyad) with regards to his Master.”

Ibn al-Qayyim said: “Worship (ibadah) unites two principles: The extremity of love with the extremity of humbleness and submissiveness. So whoever you loved but were not submissive to, you are not a worshipper of him, and whomever were submissive to without (showing) love, you are not a worshipper (of him) until you are (both) loving and submissive.”

Ibn Kathir: “In the legislation it is an expression for what combines the perfection of love (mahabbah), submissiveness (khudoo’) and fear (khawf).”

Ibn al-Qayyim said: The secret of creation and command, scriptures and legislation, reward and punishment end at these two statements, upon them all worship and tawheed gravitate. Such that it’s said: “Allah revealed 104 books. He summarised all of their meanings in the Tawrah, Bible (Injeel) and the Qur’an. He then summarised the meanings of the Qur’an in the mufassal and the meanings of the mufassal in Surah al-Fatihah, and the meanings of al-Fatihah in the verse: “You alone we worship, and You alone we seek for help”.

Summary‘The greatest verse in Surah Al- Fatiha, summarises the whole of the religion; it is a supplication which says: O Allah allow me to worship You & help me in achieving the best. The greatest objective and achievement can only be achieved through Allah’s aid - it is so important to your life that you must say it in every rak’ah in everyprayer. ‘We declare Allah’s majesty - everyone needs that, everyone is doing it and you’re part of that movement. The sentence is such to emphasise that its only you!’
