After you use the machine, some internal parts are extremely HOT!To prevent injuries, be careful not to put your fingers in the areas shown in the illustration.

The fuser unit is marked with a caution label. Please do not remove or damage the label.

Safety Precautions

Do not use a vacuum cleaner to clean up scattered toner. Doing this might cause the toner dust to ignite inside the vacuum cleaner, potentially starting a fire. Please carefully clean the toner dust with a dry, lint-free cloth and dispose of it according to local regulations.

To prevent injuries, be careful not to put your hands on the edge of the machine under the document cover or scanner cover.

To prevent injuries, be careful not to put your fingers in the area shaded in the illustration.

When you move the machine, use the handholds provided. Do NOT carry the machine by holding it at the bottom.

IEC 60825-1 specification (220 to 240 volt model only)This machine is a Class 1 laser product as defined in IEC 60825 specifications. The label shown below is attached in countries where it is needed.

To ensure safe operation the supplied three-pin plug must be inserted only into a standard three-pin power outlet that is properly grounded through the normal household wiring.

Extension cords used with this machine must be three-pin plug type and correctly wired to provide proper grounding. Incorrectly wired extension cords may cause personal injury and equipment damage.

The fact that the equipment operates satisfactorily does not imply that the power is grounded and that the installation is completely safe. For your safety, if in any doubt about the effective grounding of the power, call a qualified electrician.

Disconnect deviceYou must install this machine near a power outlet that is easily accessible. In case of an emergency, you must disconnect the power cord from the power outlet to shut off the power completely.

Wiring informationImportantIf you need to replace the plug fuse, fit a fuse that is approved by ASTA to BS1362 with the same rating as the original fuse.

Setting Up the machine

Do not connect the interface cable. Connecting the interface cable is done during the software installation process.

1 Open the front cover by pressing the front cover release button (1).

2 Unpack the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly.

3 Gently rock it from side to side several times to distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge.

4 Put the drum unit and toner cartridge into the machine so that it clicks into place.

5 Close the front cover of the machine.

1 Pull the paper tray completely out of the machine.

2 While pressing the blue paper guide release lever (1), slide the adjusters to fit the paper size. Check that the guides are firmly in the slots.

3 Fan the stack of paper well to avoid paper jams and misfeeds.

4 Put paper in the paper tray.Check that the paper is flat in the tray and below the maximum paper mark (1).

5 Put the paper tray firmly back into the machine and unfold the support flap (1) before you use the machine.

1 Push the lever (1) in the direction shown to unlock the scanner.(The grey scanner lock lever is located at the back left side, under the document cover (2).)

Do not connect the Parallel or USB cable yet.

1 Make sure that the power switch is off.Connect the AC power cord to the machine.

2 Plug the AC power cord into an AC outlet.Turn the power switch on.

1 After turning the power switch on, the LCD shows:

Make sure that you have finished the instructions from Step 1 “Setting Up the machine” on pages 4 - 7.

1 Switch off the machine and disconnect the machine from the power socket (and from your computer, if you have already connected an interface cable).

2 Turn on your computer.(For Windows® 2000 Professional/XP/XP Professional x64 Edition, you must be logged on with Administrator rights.)

3 Put the supplied CD-ROM for Windows® into your CD-ROM drive. If the model name screen appears, choose your machine. If the language screen appears, choose your language.

4 The CD-ROM main menu will appear.Click Install MFL-Pro Suite.

5 After reading and accepting the ScanSoft® PaperPort® SE License Agreement, click Yes.

The installation of PaperPort® SE will automatically start and is followed by the installation of MFL-Pro Suite.

6 When the Brother MFL-Pro Suite Software License Agreement window appears, click Yes if you agree to the Software License Agreement.

7 Choose Standard (DCP-8060) or Local Connection (DCP-8065DN), and then click Next. The installation continues.

For USB Interface Cable Users (For Windows® 98/98SE/Me/2000 Professional/XP/XP Professional x64 Edition)

Please close any applications running before installing the MFL-Pro Suite.

If this window does not appear, use Windows® Explorer to run the setup.exe program from the root folder of the Brother CD-ROM.

If you want to install the PS driver (BR-Script 3 printer driver), choose Custom Install and then follow the on-screen instructions. When the Select Components screen appears, check PS Printer Driver, and then continue following the on-screen instructions.

1 Switch off and disconnect the machine from the power socket.

2 Connect the network cable to the machine, and then connect it to a free port on your hub.


4 Turn on your computer.(For Windows® 2000 Professional/XP/XP Professional x64 Edition/Windows NT® 4.0, you must be logged on with Administrator rights.) Close any applications running before installing the MFL-Pro Suite.

5 Put the supplied CD-ROM for Windows®

8 When the Brother MFL-Pro Suite Software License Agreement window appears, read the agreement, then click Yes if you agree to its terms.

Before installation, if you are using Personal Firewall software, disable it. Once you are sure that you can print after the installation, re-start your Personal Firewall software.

9 Choose Network Connection and then click Next.

0 The installation of the Brother drivers will automatically start. The installation screens appear one after another. Please wait, it will take a few seconds for all the screens to appear.


A If the machine is configured for your network, select your machine from the list and then click Next.

B If the machine is not yet configured for use on your network, the following screen appears.

Click OK. The Configure IP Address window will appear. Enter the IP address information appropriate to your network by following the on-screen instructions.

C When the On-Line Registration screen is displayed, make your selection and follow the on-screen instructions.

D Click Finish to restart your computer.(For Windows® 2000 Professional/XP/XP Professional x64 Edition/Windows NT® 4.0, you must be logged on with Administrator rights.)

The MFL-Pro Suite (including network printer driver and network scanner driver) has been installed and the installation is now complete.

If you want to install the PS driver (Brother’s BR-Script Driver), choose Custom Install and then follow the on-screen instructions. When the Select Components screen appears, check PS Printer Driver, and then continue following the on-screen instructions.

This window will not appear if there is only one of this Brother model connected on the network, it will be selected automatically.

■ After restarting the computer, the Installation Diagnostics will run automatically. If the installation is unsuccessful, the installation results window will be shown. If the Installation Diagnostics shows a failure, please follow the on-screen instruction or read on-line help and FAQs in Start/All Programs (Programs)/Brother/MFL-Pro Suite DCP-XXXX (where XXXX is your model name).

■ Once you are sure that you can print after the installation, restart your Firewall software.

■ Firewall settings on your PC may reject the necessary network connection for Network Scanning. Follow the instructions below to configure your Windows Firewall. If you are using a personal Firewall software, see the User's Guide for your software or contact the software manufacturer.

■ Windows® XP SP2 users:1 Click the Start button, Control Panel

and then Windows Firewall.Make sure that Windows Firewall on the General tab is set to On.

2 Click the Advanced tab and Settings... button.

3 Click the Add button.4 To add port 54925 for network scanning,

enter the information below:1) In Description of service: - Enter any

description, for example “Brother Scanner” (without the inverted commas).

1 Switch off the machine and disconnect the machine from the power socket (and from the Macintosh®, if you have already connected an interface cable).

2 Turn on your Macintosh®.

3 Insert the supplied CD-ROM for Macintosh®

into your CD-ROM drive.

4 Double-click the Start Here OS 9.1-9.2 icon to install the printer and scanner drivers. If the language screen appears, choose your language.

5 Click MFL-Pro Suite to install.

6 Follow the on-screen instructions, and restart your Macintosh®.

0 If you want to use the Scan key on the machine, you must check Register your computer with the "Scan To" functions at the machine box and enter a name you want to use for your Macintosh® in Display Name. The name you enter will appear on the machine’s LCD when you press the Scan key and choose a scan option. You can enter any name up to 15 characters long. The Brother BRAdmin Light software is a Java™ application that is designed for the Apple Mac OS® X environment. It supports some of the features of the Windows BRAdmin Professional software. For example, using the BRAdmin Light software, you can change some network settings on Brother’s network ready printers and multifunction devices.The BRAdmin Light software will be installed automatically when you install the MFL-Pro Suite. Please refer to Installing the driver and software in this Quick Setup Guide if you have not yet installed the MFL-Pro Suite.For more information on BRAdmin Light, visit us at http://solutions.brother.com.

Setting your IP address, Subnet Mask and Gateway using BRAdmin Light

1 Double-click the Macintosh HD icon on your desktop.

2 Choose Library, Printers, Brother and then Utilities.

3 Double-click the BRAdmin Light.jar file. Run the BRAdmin Light software. BRAdmin Light searches new devices automatically.

4 Double-click the new device.

5 Enter the IP Address, Subnet Mask and Gateway, and then click OK.

6 The address information will be saved to the printer.

BRAdmin Light configuration utility (For Mac OS® X users)

■ If you have a DHCP/BOOTP/RARP server in your network, you don’t have to do the following operation. The print server will automatically obtain its own IP address. Make sure that version 1.4.1_07 or later of Java™ client software is installed on your computer.

■ The default password for the print server is ‘access’. You can use BRAdmin Light to change this password.
