Summaries of the workshop
AJCU-AP Consortium Division of Environment and Climate ChangeCoping with Climate Change and
Environmental Degradation:Theories and Practicable Options
March 23-24, 2012Sophia University,
Prof. Toyoaki WASHIDA
Mitigation and Adaptation Papers are categorized into two
fields, adaptation and mitigation for the climate change.
These two categories have well balanced proportion in this workshop.
We can observe interrelation between two categories.
Mitigation – Three aspects Renewable resource issues Communication and sociological
aspects International linkage
Renewable resource issues Dr. Priantoro: Biofuel of methane
from dung, community based and appropriate technology
Dr. Ikeo: Importance of appropriate technology in developing countries, their feasibility and reality.
Dr. Perez: Microalgae, include both issues of adaptation (food security) and mitigation (renewable resource)
Communication and Sociological Issues
Mr.Trencher: New role of university for creating low carbon and sustainable communities.
Mr. Ikeda: Clarify the role of media expressing the social mind for climate change.
Prof. Kawakami: How to create a low carbon society and the role of new indicator.
International Linnkage Dr. Horie: Comparative studies for
border adjustment policies Dr. Washida: Comparative analysis
between unilateral actions and multilateral actions
Adaptation – Three aspects Agriculture Flood disasters Community based adaptation
Agreculture Dr. Hibiki: Climate change impacts on
Japanese rice production
Flood disasters Dr. Narisma: Fundamental
frameworks to evaluate the flood disasters. Vulnerability plays important roles.
Dr. Nagai: Local government policies are often ineffective, peoples autonomous adaptation has also difficulties.
Dr. Okagawa: Economic impact of flood disasters. Another estimation of the damage costs.
Community Based Adaptation
Prof. Mcdonald: Community has autonomous capacities of adaptation. Collective discussion. Specific issues in Asia Pacific.
Required researches and networks in Asia Pacific
We have some common issues both in adaptation and mitigation. Renewable Resource Issues, Economic Linkage, Flood Disaster Management, Preservation Traditional Fishery, etc.
Exchange of knowledge (based on theoretical and empirical studies) is important
How to create a new research network in Asia Pacific.
