round winning 87-pointscore and earned JeffDavis a silver buckle. Thenew kid on the blockserved notice that he wasin the game.

Being athletic is usual-ly found in your genes the same is true in theanimal world, Jeff Davissaid. Horsemen knowthat if you want a runninghorse, you look for run-

ning horse bloodlines.Well, if you want them tobuck, then you need abucking horse in theirbloodlines.

Four Star Rodeo Com-pany has been raisingbucking horses for thepast several years. SuperStar, one of the compa-nys great bucking horses,

has been the sire orgrandsire to many of thehorses in the herd.

About 10 years ago, FourStar Rodeo Company hadthe good fortune of

acquiring a keen littlemare named BeaverGaskins, who reallyenjoys her job (bucking offcowboys). She works lessthan 16 seconds per week.

Whether throwing offcowboys or taking them tothe pay window, she con-tinues to do it with style.

To be a really goodhorse, whether it is race-horse, cow horse or buck-

ing horse, they have tolike what they do. Thats

what makes them great, you cant make a horsebuck if he or she doesnt

want to, Jeff Davis said.Be ready for exciting,

    Brush up on thecowboy vocabulary

Cowboys and cowgirlscome together each year

to put their skills to thetest. Each event is judgedbased on a variety of crite-ria, and riders work bothindividually and as teams

    to complete their goals.

Saddle Bronc RidingSaddle Bronc Riding is

    rodeo's classic event,requiring strength, style,

grace and precise timing.Saddle bronc ridingevolved from the task ofbreaking and traininghorses to work the cattle

ranches of the Old West.Every move the bronc rid-er makes must be syn-chronized with the move-ment of the horse. Thecowboy's objective is a

fluid ride, somewhat incontrast to the wilder andless-controlled rides ofbareback riders. To prop-erly mark out his horse,

the saddle bronc rider musthave both heels touching theanimal above the point of itsshoulders when it makes its first

jump from the chute. The sad-dle bronc rider has only a thickrein attached to his horses hal-ter. Using one hand, the cowboytries to stay securely seated inhis saddle for eight seconds. Ifhe touches any part of the horseor his own body with his freehand, he is disqualified.

Judges score the horses buck-ing action, the cowboys controlof the horse and the cowboysspurring action.

    Bareback Riding

Bareback riders endure moreabuse, suffer more injuries andcarry away more long-termdamage than all other rodeocowboys. It has been comparedto riding a jackhammer withone hand. As the bronc and rid-er burst from the chute, the rid-er must have both spurs touch-ing the horses shoulders, calledmarking out. A bareback rider

is judged on his spurring tech-nique, the degree to which histoes remain turned out while heis spurring and his willingnessto take whatever might comeduring his ride.

An 8-second ride earns ajudges score based on the per-formance of both the cowboyand the horse.

Steer WrestlingThe objective of the steer

wrestler, who is also known as abulldogger, is to use strengthand technique to wrestle a steerto the ground as quickly as pos-sible. At the time the two cometogether, theyre both traveling

bout 30 miles per hour. The bulldogger starts onhorseback in a box. To catch thesprinting steer, the cowboy usesa hazer, who is anothermounted cowboy who gallopshis horse along the right side ofthe steer and keeps it from veer-ing away from the bulldogger. The steer gets a head start and

when the cowboy reachesthe steer, he slides downand off the right side ofhis galloping horse, hookshis right arm around thesteer's right horn, graspsthe left horn with his lefthand and, using strengthand leverage, slows theanimal and wrestles it tothe ground. His work isn'tcomplete until the steer ison its side with all fourfeet pointing the samedirection.

    Team RopingTeam roping, the only

true team event in prorodeo, requires closecooperation and timingbetween two highlyskilled ropers a headerand a heeler and their

horses. The event origi-nated on ranches whencowboys needed to treator brand large steers andthe task proved too diffi-

cult for one man.Team ropers start from

the boxes on each side ofthe chute from which thesteer enters the arena. Thesteer gets a head startdetermined by the lengthof the arena. The headerropes first and after hemakes a legal catch, heturns the steer to the leftand exposes the steer'shind legs to the heeler. The heeler then attemptsto rope both hind legs.

After the cowboys catchthe steer, the clock stops

when there is no slack intheir ropes and their hors-es face one another.

    Bull RidingBull riding, which is

intentionally climbing onthe back of a 2,000-pound

bull, emerged from thefearless and possibly fool-hardy nature of the cow-boy. Bull riding is danger-ous and predictably excit-

ing, demanding intensephysical prowess, su-preme mental toughnessand courage.

The bull rider may useonly one hand to stayaboard during the eight-second ride. If he touchesthe bull or himself withhis free hand, he receivesno score. While spurring abull can add to the cow-boys score, riders arecommonly judged solelyon their ability to stayaboard the twisting, buck-ing mass of muscle.

Every bull is unique inits bucking habits, whichare studied by the riders.

A bull may dart to the left, then to the right, then rearback. Some spin or con-tinuously circle in onespot in the arena. Others

add jumps or kicks totheir spins, while othersmight jump and kick in astraight line or move sideto side while bucking.

In Tie-Down Roping, the cowboy must rope a calf as quickly as possible. Assoon as a catch is made, the cowboy dismounts, sprints to the calf and tosses iton its side, which is called flanking. With a small rope, or pigging string, anythree of the calf's legs are tied securely.
