On the CoverMasterpiece Mystery! “Zen”With three detective series offering new episodes, Sunday nights in July are sure to add a little intrigue and suspense to your week’s end. Fans of “Poirot” have already cracked two cases, but you still have one more opportunity to watch the Belgian sleuth in a new mystery July 3. Also this month, “Miss Marple” returns for a new episode in which an old friend is found murdered. See page 7 for details.

Most excitement, though, is building around Masterpiece’s brand new detective, Aurelio Zen. He’s an honest cop who’s

bosses are on the side of the lawbreakers. Bringing justice to modern-day Italy means outwitting prosecutors and politicians in addition to the usual slew of kidnappers and killers.

Rufus Sewell stars as Zen and Italian actress Caterina Murino costars as Tania Moretti, the police chief’s new secretary who finds Zen to be a remarkable exception to the predatory Romeos

around the station. Shot on location in and around Rome, the series captures the vivid life and colorful settings por-trayed in the bestselling novels by Michael Dibdin.

Want a preview of the new detective’s Bond-like swagger? Visit wpt.org and search for Zen in our online schedule.

Watch Masterpiec Mystery! “Zen” 9 p.m. July 17, 24 and 31.

American Masters

Each fall the schedule fills with fresh programs that take all of us on bold new journeys. Here’s just a few of the pro-grams that have us looking forward to gathering around the television in the next few months.

America RevealedHold on as breathtaking aerial and satellite imagery reveals how America works. Seeing America’s infrastructure from above puts into perspective the extraordinary array of invis-ible networks and man-made “ecosystems” that interact with one another to sustain our world. Yul Kwon (“Survi-vor: Cook Islands”) hosts the series.

Prohibition: A Film by Ken Burns & Lynn NovickDiscover the true story of America’s “Great Experiment.” Go beyond the oft-told tales of gangsters, rumrunners, flappers and speakeasies to experience the rise, rule and fall of the 18th Amendment. Coming to WPT in October.

American Masters “Bill T. Jones: A Good Man”Part of the PBS Arts Fall Festival (Friday nights this fall), American Masters follows director/choreographer Bill T. Jones on an intense creative journey leading his company in the creation of an original dance-theater piece in honor of Abraham Lincoln’s bicentennial.
