Product: The Aircraft Simulation Environment Tool (ASET) is a “Concept-to-Sim” tool designed for LaRC researchers. ASET is shown in the middle of the page surrounded by various research functions facilitated by the ASET design environment. By providing a design testbed, in a real-time simulation environment, ASET facilitates fight dynamics analysis, flight control law development, system identification, and modeling research for advanced aerospace configurations. An important feature of this tool is its specific capability to allow researchers to work in CAD/CAE environments (e.g. Matlab) or user codes (ftn,c,c++) and seamlessly carry their algorithms (control laws, models, etc.) directly to LaRC simulators, such as DMS shown in the lower right-hand corner of the graphic. ASET provides a full 6 d.o.f. nonlinear simulation capability, GUI or script interfaces, linear model computations at trim or on the fly, and numerous other important capabilities and options that assist researchers. An important feature is that ASET allows researchers to easily and rapidly change the vehicle and/or its subsystems such as sensors, actuators, control laws, etc., without having to rebuild the entire simulation. The concept is analogous to a record player, where ASET is the record player (that does not change) and different vehicles or subsystems being modeled are records that are readily changed in the player. The first aircraft used in ASET is the ICE configuration (provided by Lockheed Martin Tactical Airframe Systems, LMTAS). Distributed control effectors, developed at LaRC, such as Passive Porosity and shape-change devices (used to model synthetic jets) have been into this simulation model. Advanced reconfigurable control laws have been developed for this aircraft under AVST/IRS program.

Significance: This product will provide a immeasurable savings in time for researchers bringing their ideas from concept to real-time simulation. Virtually all the simulation power, capability, and models of the LaRC real-time simulation facility are provided at the researcher’s workstation. The unique interface ASET provides allows direct movement of algorithms and data back to the real-time facility from the researcher and visa-versa from the real-time facility to the researcher workstation. The best of both worlds are linked.

Future Plans: ASET is intended to be a long-term LaRC simulation capability, therefore development and modification of ASET should be a continuous process to meet the unique changing requirements of leading edge research. Direction of the tool development will be defined by researcher requirements. More aircraft models will be added to the ASET hangar as the LaRC real-time simulation facility converts models over to the LaSRS++ system. To date, a beta version (0.8a) of ASET has been created that provides a research modification capability limited to whole subsystem replacement. ASET v1.0 will allow detail model parameter replacement. Additional features may include, extension to other CAD tool outputs besides Matlab.
