SPORT AVIATION 49

ABOUT THE PICTURES

If this Fly-In issue appears different this year, particu-larly if there seemingly are not enough pictures of theairplanes present at Oshkosh, it is because the affair hasgrown so big that it is virtually impossible to treat thesubject in the same way we did in years past.

For one thing, over 900 show airplanes attended, andthere were between three and four thousand itinerantaircraft present during the week. Where do you start tofeature pictures of them? Each pilot expects, and rightfullyso, to see his airplane included in our coverage, yet this initself was an impossible task for our photographic crew.Consequently, it was highly necessary this year to be moreselective in the types of pictures presented in our Fly-Incoverage to reflect better the overall spirit and context ofthe event, and we hope that we haven't disappointedanyone because of it. £)

THOROUGH INSPECTION

A recent Chapter newsletter made mention of the factthat the FAA inspector, called in to check a homebuiltconstructed from one of the popular set of plans, insistedon seeing the can that the varnish came in, the gluecontainer, and many other inquiries of this type. What it allmeans is that perhaps it is unwise to throw out suchcontainers until the project is finished, and that it is alsowise to document, identify, and keep the receipts for itemsand materials purchased for your airplane project. COMMUNITYCOOPERATION

The people and institutions of Oshkosh opened theirarms and doors even wider this year to embrace andwelcome the thousands of visitors who attended the 1971EAA International Convention Fly-In.

The Wisconsin State University at Oshkosh reportedthat about 1000 people took advantage of the low costdormitory facilities during their stay, and the university isconsidering making another 500 rooms available next year.

Another 100 people stayed in Ripon College dormi-tories in nearby Ripon.

As expected, every motel and hotel room for milesaround was filled with Convention goers, and certainlyevery restaurant in the same area had EAA members orvisitors being served at any time during the hours they wereopen.

Food and merchandise sales in the community were upconsiderably during the Fly-In week, a welcome shot in thearm for the merchants during this slack economic period.Gas stations in the area without a doubt filled up the tankof every car heading homeward, and many others extendedtheir stay in the Fox River Valley to learn and see more ofthis wonderful area.

A Convention such as ours injects a tremendousamount of money into a community and good businesssense will tell the community's businessmen to cater to thevisitors in every way. However, it's the fine people of acommunity who must open their hearts and extend a warmwelcome to the Convention visitors first, or else there justwould be no Convention in their community. The people ofOshkosh, as well as the businessmen, have done exactlythis.
