AIRBORNE & SPECIAL OPERATIONS MUSEUM FOUNDATION100 Bragg Blvd., Fayetteville, NC 28301910.643.ASOMwww.asomf.org

Last year I explained that the Foundation was raising money to try to meet operating deficits and to work with professional counsel toward a national campaign. Our fundraising efforts continued through this fiscal year, and we began a feasibility study with the Kellogg Organization. The study was not concluded by the end of the year.

Other “behind the scenes” Foundation happenings this year included developing a new state-of-the-art interactive website that is database driven. We had anticipated having it launched in the fall, but are taking our time to do it right the first time. The ASOM’s website attracts an average of 25,500 unique visits per month, but it can more adequately represent the museum by providing a stronger more effective presentation and attract even more visitors to the site, and in turn more visitors to the museum. We currently have just over 1000 subscribers who receive periodic email museum updates, but that method of delivering the messages, and determining who they are sent to, is not adequate either. Further, the new database will incorporate several current databases into one: donors, gift shop customers, people requesting more information, visitors, etc. Those databases are going through extensive scrutiny before being transferred to the new system. We will develop a valuable resource for communicating more effectively and efficiently with our friends, and be able to track the results. Marketing and fundraising both will profit from this technological advancement.

In the technology area of our operations, the museum was added to the Fort Bragg phone system. Our old phone number is still being forwarded to the new number, 910-643-ASOM, due to the large volume of marketing materials in circulation. Fort Bragg also initiated a new computer database system to manage volunteer records. Both those changes took some time to implement and learn. In response to the drought, Foundation staff and our groundskeeper undertook a lengthy process of adjusting the irrigation system to minimize the amount of water being used.

The opening of the special operations forces section of the gallery required an update to museum brochures and maps. The Foundation took that as an opportunity to redesign marketing materials, and that update will be carried into the new website design. Watch for these exciting improvements!

Sincerely,

Sandy KlotzExecutive Director

To all the friends of the ASOM:At the start of the ASOM Foundation’s fiscal year in October 2006, the City of Fayetteville had received $2.3 million from the state to develop the state’s veterans park downtown, adjacent to the museum. The last of the debris of the former Days Inn across Bragg Boulevard was being removed and the City was also planning to purchase the Silver Pond restaurant. There were no plans for the new veterans park.

By spring 2007, the nearby Festival Park had opened. Priorities for City Council and initiatives for city management included a Fayetteville State University link to downtown, and development of the veterans park. In the summer, the vacant restaurant, and the auto parts store on our side of Bragg Boulevard, were razed, and more land acquisition plans were underway. Billboards were being removed. By fall, the city officials were working with a design consulting firm. The firm met with and sought input from the ASOMF Board members and staff, as well as citizens from throughout the community. We also talked with the firm and with city officials about a proposal to relocate a WWII chapel and mess hall to the veterans park. A decision on this proposal is pending.

The fact that the long-awaited North Carolina State Veterans Park will be developed adjacent to the ASOM has a tremendous and very positive impact on the museum. The area surrounding the museum will transform from unused, ill-used, and unsightly to something that will enhance the museum and this downtown gateway.

The actual plans for what the area will look like, what will be located on it, and how it will tie into its neighboring areas are not yet known. We are, however, confident of the outcome, because of the manner in which the city leadership has involved not only the ASOMF, but the entire community. Whatever the final plan, we can rest assured that the Airborne & Special Operations Museum and the new North Carolina Veterans Park will serve together in insure that “THE LEGEND CONTINUES.”

Airborne! De Oppresso Liber!

James J. Lindsay

General, US Army (Ret.)

Chairman, Board of Directors

Gallery ExpansionGeneral Doug Brown, then commander, US Special Operations Command (SOCOM),

dedicated the nearly 2,000 square feet of new gallery exhibit space on October 4, 2006.

The exhibits and audiovisuals present the story of the worldwide missions of Army

special operations forces from 1980 to the present.

Special Exhibits The exhibit Vietnam: A War Remembered, remained on display into spring 2007.

It came down temporarily to make room for a most exciting and popular exhibit…

Liberty and Freedom: North Carolina’s Tour of the Bill of Rights, had its premiere at the

ASOM. The stolen then recovered state’s copy of the document was on display February 9,

10, and 11. In those three days, 5127 people viewed the Bill of Rights. Commenting about

the amazing response, Dick Lankford, a state archivist, said “Fayetteville set the bar.”

The document went on to six other locations.

A traveling exhibit remembering the victims of the Holocaust was on display from early May

through September. When Humanity Fails was created by the Afikim Foundation in cooperation

with the U.S. Army Center for Military History. The ASOM supplemented the exhibit with photos

of 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions soldiers’ experiences.

The Gate, an arching 23-foot, 5-ton steel sculpture by Jim Gallucci honoring the sacrifice and

tragedy of the September 11 terrorist attacks, remained on the grounds of the ASOM throughout

the fiscal year.

Programs & Events

One of the most accomplished documentary filmmakers, Ken Burns sought out the ASOM for a

screening of his latest documentary, The War. He wanted veterans and active duty military to

be able to view it. On April 11, five months before the movie aired on PBS, Burns discussed the

production to an invited crowd and premiered a one-hour segment. UNC-TV and the museum

organized the event.

Another exciting documentary screening, BRATS: Our Journey Home, was held at the

ASOM on June 19. An examination of how growing up military influences adult life and

relationships, the filmmaker Donna Musil felt strongly that her award-winning documentary be

shown in this market. Musil addressed a full house.

Remembering the beginning of the production of gliders for WWII 65 years ago, the traveling

exhibit Wisconsin’s Flying Trees was on display April through June. Author Charles Day spoke

of the use of gliders in the war during a special presentation on March 15. Day authored Silent

Ones, WWII Invasion Glider Test and Experiment. On March 24, ASOM presented a screening of the

new documentary Silent Wings: The American Glider Pilots of WWII. That date marked the 62nd

anniversary of Operation VARSITY, the largest single airborne lift of the war.

Programs & Events Cont:

During the fiscal year, the ASOM offered several other author presentations.

John Griffin spoke about his book, Lt. Bill Farrow: Doolittle Raider, in May. In

July, military doctors discussed their experiences in the Global War on Terror;

Dr. Michael Hodges authored A Doctor Looks at War: My Year in Iraq, and Cdr.

Richard Jadick wrote On Call in Hell: A Doctor’s Iraq War Story. In September,

Major General (Ret) Sid Shachnow spoke of his life experiences beginning

with his childhood in Lithuania during the Holocaust and three years in Kovno

Concentration Camp. Shachnow eventually became responsible for U.S. Army

Special forces worldwide, and wrote Hope and Honor.

This August’s National Airborne Day, the 67th birthday of the U.S. Army Airborne

and the museum’s seventh anniversary, featured keynote speaker

Lt. Gen. Lloyd J. Austin, Commanding General, XVIII Airborne Corps

and Fort Bragg. The events of the day, from the jump and ceremony

to the equipment displays to the 82nd chorus performances,

again demonstrated one of many ways the museum bridges the gap

between the civilian and military communities.

Recruitment, Retention and TrainingThe Army Recruiting Command brought a group of 55 in July, and recruiting battalions made visits. Thirty-two groups of ROTC and Junior ROTC students came to the ASOM, Army, Air Force, and Navy.

The ASOM had hosted 573 reenlistments by the end of September. Twelve soldiers of the 35th Signal Brigade started this year off, holding a group re-up ceremony in October 2006.

During the day, the ASOM is the ideal place for soldiers to gather for unit history training. This builds esprit de corps and puts the soldiers’ work into historical context, while bringing them into the civilian community at the same time. Over 2,000 soldiers visited the museum, in over 50 scheduled group visits, as part of their continuing education.

Additionally, the ASOM was the site of prop blasts, promotion ceremonies, briefings and conferences, and commissioning ceremonies. The museum definitely felt the presence of large military events throughout the year, including those by USASOC Sustainment Brigade, S3 of 507 Corps Support Group, 1st Brigade Combat Team Chemical Company, 20th Engineer Brigade, 1/7 Special Forces Group, US Army Special Forces Command, and US Army Special Operations Command.

Staying in Touch Over 280 deployed soldiers and their families were connected through video teleconferences (VTC) hosted at the museum this year. In partnership with Freedom Calls, the VTC program is now entering its fourth year at the museum, with no shortage of Fort Bragg units in Iraq with which to coordinate.

Veterans’ associations always find the museum while in Fayetteville. This year, the ASOM was honored to be visited by former 101st soldiers, the Special Forces Brotherhood, a Navy reunion, Korean War Psychological Operations veterans, and the D Co. 787th Maintenance Battalion reunion.

Showing Off and “Down” TimeFort Bragg officials often bring officials and soldiers visiting from out of town, and from out of the country, to their downtown museum. One such visit was by Korean officers, and another the wives of visiting Bolivian generals.

The museum is also a premier location for after-hours military social events, from smaller ceremonies to full dress formals. Events this year included those by the 57th Medical Company. US Army Special Operations Command, XVIII Corps Judge Adjutant General, 403rd Cargo Transport Company, 2/325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 1/7th Special Forces Group, US Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command, US Special Operations Command, and Womack Resident Physicians.

RememberingFallen soldiers are remembered with granite paver stones in the Memorial Garden. Now, paver stones are engraved with the names of those killed in Afghanistan and Iraq, joining those from Vietnam,

Korea, World War II and other conflicts. These stones are often dedicated with a ceremony, either by friends and family or the soldier’s unit. Unfortunately, there were too many this year, including one by the 1st Special Forces Group and another by the 50th Signal Battalion Association. Also a unit monument for the 16th Military Police Brigade was dedicated by the command team of the 503rd Military Police Battalion.

SUPPORTING THE

COMMUNITY

MEdIa

Event SiteThe ASOM was again chosen as the site for many events by our non-military community. Family reunions, school reunions, weddings, and wedding receptions were scheduled regularly. Press conferences were held at the ASOM by the Cumberland County Business Council, Military Affairs Council, the Convention and Visitors Bureau, and various BRAC-related organizations, as well as by the Fayetteville Police Department and the NC Highway Patrol. The NC County Commissioners Association included the museum in their itinerary. Many local organizations, businesses, and individuals held private events at the ASOM throughout the year.

Educating the YoungThe ’06-’07 fiscal year brought 6,824 students of all ages in 155 scheduled class field trips, an increase from the previous year. About half were from beyond Cumberland County. Over 2,800 additional children toured the museum through organized trips with scout troops, recreation centers, child and day care programs, etc.

Daily VisitorsThe community is proud of the ASOM. The museum earned Best Museum and Most Attractive Museum in The Fayetteville Observer’s 2007 Readers’ Choice Awards, and Best Thing to Show Off to Out of Towners and Best Museum in Up & Coming’s Best of Fayetteville 2007. Approximately half of the museum’s visitors come from the Fayetteville-Fort Bragg area.

The museum also attracts people who do not live here, from families to convention goers to tour groups. This year the ASOM had 54 scheduled tour bus visits, bringing over 2000 people.

AdvertisingOur advertising and other marketing efforts continue to pay off. Billboards and brochures help keep the museum’s presence strong along Interstate 95. Ads in travel and lifestyle magazines, as well as newspapers, keep it visible all over the Southeast. The museum also participates in innovative, and successful, Internet campaigns.

On the Web Our website is a valuable way to spread information about the museum. The site had an average of 888 unique hits per day, an increase of over 35% each of the last two years. The gift shop continues to see a greater percentage of sales coming from the online shop, especially during the holidays, and is about to launch its new portion of the website. The Foundation is in the process of developing a new website, which will be tied to a database, and will improve the information visitors to the site receive, and better communication with our friends.

Public Relat ionsPublic relations efforts helped the museum secure a great deal of media coverage again this year. These unpaid stories, mentions, calendar entries, and credits have an advertising value equivalent to $188,368. At the close of the fiscal year, the ASOM had received $3.1 million in “free” publicity since opening in 2000 (not including Internet coverage).

Nationally, some of the year’s print media highlights include Bus Tours Magazine, Courier (National Tour Association), Leisure Group Travel, Association News, Delta Sky, USASOC’s Tip of the Spear, Small Arms Review, and Group Travel Planet.

Regionally, the museum was covered in the North Carolina 2007 Travel Guide, North Carolina Magazine, Carolina Heritage, Southeastern Group Tour Magazine, the Triangle’s Living in Style, and Our State. Ken Burns’ appearance, and the display of the Bill of Rights, resulted in regional news coverage.

Over 143,000 people visited the museum this year, but it’s what they left behind that

drives programs and operations. This year, they left $459,036 in the gift shop, $68,946 in

the donation boxes, and $126,105 for theater and simulator tickets.

With $654.087 in on-site spending, our 143,815 visitors spent an average of $4.55 each.

In addition, $58,115 was spent on website and catalog gift shop orders, $64,541 in

paver sales, $30,363 in after-hours use of the facility and $202,673 in contributions,

sponsorship, the Combined Federal Campaign, and the museum’s Roll Call and Friends

programs. The ASOM Foundation was awarded a $40,000 grant by the Cumberland

Community Foundation, the Tourism Development Authority granted $51,736,

Cumberland County contributed $164,000, and the museum Foundation paid the City our

obligatory $9,667 based on sales.

The gift shop turned a 50% profit, pavers 40%, evening events 77%, and simulator and

theater 35%. The museum Foundation found itself needing to replace the projection

equipment for the theater and simulator, and that lease has reduced our profitability; last

fiscal the profit on those venues was 95%. (Note: these figures do not include salaries.)

Expenses were minimized. Careful use of a small staff kept salaries/payroll taxes/benefits

to only 23% of expenses, even less than the previous year. The next highest single

expense was marketing. A strategic use of that 16% of expenses gave the museum a

presence on interstates, the Internet, and in local, regional, and national publications.

An even 75% of all Foundation expenses, including salaries, went to programming uses.

Even with a rather successful fundraising effort, the ASOM Foundation expenses exceeded

income by $169,560. However, we secured an additional $99,800 in pledges to be paid in

coming fiscal years. $66,624 was put into reserves for Army programs and improvements.

The Need for Funds: This year the museum Foundation contracted with The Kellogg

Organization to complete a feasibility study to evaluate a goal of $6 million from a

national fundraising campaign. The needs identified include the production of new films

for the theater and simulator, the development of a multi-lingual audio tour of the gallery,

and the growth of the Foundation’s endowment. The feasibility study is not complete.

Please remember, and explain to others, that although the ASOM is an Army museum, and

the building is maintained by the Army, Foundation funds will always be needed for the

museum to exist and improve.
