    Eliminate bubbles and dirt in the systembefore they cause trouble.Air and dirt trapped in the system can produce major

    problems such as reduced heat transer, loss o eiciency,

    pipe corrosion, pump damage, increased energy consumption,

    and irritating noise. The highly eicient Taco 4900 Seriesseparator, now with optional removable covers, clears

    the system o microbubbles, sand, dirt, and rust to save money,

    energy, and component wear. 4900 Series stainless steel PALL

    Ring baskets can be removed by one person. Unlike many com-

    petitive models each 4900 unit is designed and constructed to

    the requirements o Section VIII o the ASME code as standard.

    European PALL Ring technology. Taco ingenuity.The 4900 Series integral PALL ring technology has been

    proven in countless European installations. PALL rings are used

    in the processing industry to mix gases with, or separate gasesrom liquids. The use o PALL rings in hydronic air separation is

    so unique, its patented. By applying PALL ring technology to air

    and dirt separation, the 4900 Series will:

    Remove microbubbles as small as 18 X 10 -6m rom the system;

    Remove air which has dissolved in the systems water;

    Remove air from places where an air vent cannot be installed;

    Remove and separate solid particles from the ow.

    High efciency cleaning o air and dirt.PALL ring technology has been used or many years in the

    processing industry. Tacos application o PALL rings to hydronicair and dirt separation is new to the HVAC industry. While

    air bubbles are separated by the PALL rings through a process

    known as coalescence, dirt particles are actually caught and

    sited to the bottom o the tank, where they can be removed

    through a blowdown valve. The 4900 Series provides higher

    efciency, with reduced pressure drops, so a somewhat smaller

    pump may be used or maximum efciency.

    Superior air bubble removal

    Series 4900-A models clean the system o ree air and microbubbles;

    Series 4900-AD models remove both air AND dirt rom the hydronicsystem. 304 stainless steel screens are provided

    on the inlet/outlet o each separator to isolatethe separators internals rom the hydronicsystem. A ushing cock allows for the cleaning

    o the PALL rings. A ball valve is providedat the bottom o the unit to permit

    blowdown o accumulated particles.While construction o both modelsdiers somewhat, the PALL ring

    operating principle is the same.

    When water is brought into contact with a PALL RING, the stream isdeected in many directions. Microbubbles attach to the ring surface, bycoalescence growing large enough to be separated.Large numbers o PALL rings in the 4900 Series yieldsvirtually air-ree system water.

    Applications

    In addition, as water is heated rom the ill temperatureto the operating temperature, a great deal o air isreleased. Thereore, the simple act o bringing the waterto operating temperature could lead to corrosion andair pockets, both o which should be avoided.

    A method o removing this released air rom the pipingsystem is thereore required. Enter the air separator. Anair separator is a device that removes the air rom thecirculating luid.

    There are several types o air separators in use today.Depending upon the type o expansion tank used inthe system, the air separator is part o an Air ControlSystem or an Air Elimination System.

    Air Control SystemsI a conventional (non-bladder) style expansion tankis used, it is desirable to redirect the separated airto the space above the water level in the expansiontank (Figure 4). The dotted line rom the air separa-tor (scoop) to the plain steel tank shows the properconnection, with the air piped rom the scoop to theexpansion tank through a special tank itting.

    This itting directs the air to the top portion o thetank, and discourages air rom migrating back into thesystem (Figure 5), when the system cools on the o

    cycle. Note that since the air is recycled to provide acushion in the expansion tank, this system is called anAir Control system.

    Note that the circulator is on the supply side o the boiler.This is the proper location, as it results in the highest pres-sure at the top o the system ( i the circulator was on thereturn side o the boiler, the boiler pressure drop reducesthe pressure at the top.) Having a higher pressure at thetop keeps air in solution, and helps prevent problems andair binding.

    Applications

    Air Elimination SystemsI a Captive Air or Bladder Style expansion tank is used,there is no reason to save the separated air (Figure 6).Thereore, i an air separator (scoop) is used in an airelimination system rather than an air control system,

    the separator is itted with an automatic air vent (TacosHy-Vent series), which discharges the separated airto the atmosphere. Note that since the air is elimi-nated through an air vent this system is called an AirElimination system.

    Optimum perormance is achieved at line velocities upto 4 t/sec. However, air scoops have been successullyinstalled on applications with velocities up to 8 t/sec.Air scoops are specifcally designed or the line sizewhich they are to be installed. These sizes range rom

    1 inch to 4 inch.

    Most manuacturers rate their air scoop product linesor 125 psi with a maximum operating temperature o300F. Air scoops are installed in conjunction with anexpansion tank and air vent as shown in igure 7.(See Taco Catalog# 100-7.2 or additional inormation.)

    Taco Air scoops are applied inresidential and light commercial

    applications or the removal oree air in water or water/glycolsystems. The body o each airscoop provides an increased cross sectional area whichlowers velocity within the piping network thereby allowingree air to rise due to buoyant orce. To assist with theremoval of smaller air bubbles integral bafes are incorpo-rated within most air scoops.

    Tangential ASME Air SeparatorsTaco Tangential Air Separators areapplied in commercial, institutionaland industrial applications or theremoval o ree air in water orwater/glycol systems. The Tangentialdesign air separators utilize the di-erence in density to separate reeair from system uid.

    System uid within a tangential airseparator is orced to the wall othe separator due to centriugalorce. The less dense air then migrates to the center o theseparator or venting at the top o the unit. Tangential airseparators produce higher pressure drops than in-line ormicro-bubble separators due to the vortex developmentwithin the unit.

    Air Separator with Captive Air Tank

    When In-Line Air Separators are installed in Air Eliminationsystems (Figure 10) with Captive Air bladder or diaphragmstyle expansion tanks, automatic air vents should beinstalled at the top o each separator. As Air Eliminationsystems have a permanent separation provided by the blad-

    der or diaphragm between the initial tank pre-charge andthe system uid, no loss of pre-charge air will occur.(See Taco Catalog# 400-1.1 or additional inormation.)

    4900 Series High Efciency Micro-BubbleAir and Dirt ASME SeparatorTaco 4900 Series High Efciency Micro-BubbleAir and Dirt Separators are appliedin commercial, institutional and indus-trial applications or the removal o ree andentrained air. The 4900 Series utilize thecoalescence o micro air bubbles aroundPALL rings to separate ree air rom a

    system uid.

    The 4900 Series incorporates the highestavailable coalescence surace area availableon the market today. This enhanced suracearea allows the removal o micro-bubbles as smallas 18 microns in diameter. The 4900 Series separa-tors remove up to 100% of the free air, 100% of theentrained air, and up to 99.6% of the dissolved airin the system uid. This eature is especially benefcialin correcting problems in air entrained systems.

    These units are designed, built and stamped to therequirements o ASME. Manuacturers oer tangentialseparators in working pressures o 125, 150, 250 psi andhigher i required.

    Optional stainless steel strainers are specifed to capture

    and allow the removal o large debris. These screens arenormally specifed with 3/16 inch perorations and reearea o not less than 5 times the open area o the nozzleto minimize pressure drop. Most manuacturers provide ablowdown connection at the bottom o the unit.

    When Tangential Air Separators are installed in conven-tional Air Control systems with plain steel expansion tanks(Figure 9) care must be taken to insure that piping betweenthe air vent and the plain steel tank is pitched at least 3degrees to acilitate the migration o captured air back intothe expansion vessel. Systems with plain steel expansiontanks must not have automatic air vents installed as this willlead to the loss o the expansion tank compression cushion.

    When Tangential Air Separators are installed in AirElimination systems (Figure 10) with Captive Air bladderor diaphragm style expansion tanks, automatic air ventsshould be installed at the top o each air separator. AsAir Elimination systems have a permanent separation provid-ed by the bladder or diaphragm between the initial tank pre-charge and the system uid, no loss of pre-charge will occur.(See Taco Catalog# 400-2.8 or additional inormation.)

    Applications

    Larger systems Removal of larger particles

    An additional eature o the 4900 Series is the capabilityto remove dirt rom hydronic systems. 4900 Series dirtseparators are capable of removing dirt particlesas small as 35 microns in diameter. This eatureis especially benefcial in cleaning up dirty systems withclogged strainers, balance and control valves.

    The 4900 Series has been designed in two velocity ranges,a standard product series suitable or line velocity to 4.9t/sec. and a high velocity series suitable or line velocitiesup 11 t/sec. The perormance o the 4900 product linehas been independently tested and published. (These testresults are available through your local Taco representative.)

    These units are designed, built and stamped to therequirements ASME Section VIII, Division 1. Manuacturersoer micro bubble air and dirt separators in workingpressures o 125, 150, 250 psi.

    When High Efciency Micro Bubble Air and DirtSeparators are installed in conventional Air Control sys-tems with plain steel expansion tanks (Figure 9) care mustbe taken to insure that piping between the air vent andthe plain steel tank is pitched at least 3 degrees to acili-tate the migration o captured air back to the expansionvessel. Systems with plain steel expansion tanks must nothave automatic vents installed as this will lead to the losso the expansion tank compression cushion.

    When High Efciency Micro Bubble Air and Dirt

    Separators are installed in Air Elimination systems (Figure10) with Captive Air bladder or diaphragm style expansiontanks, automatic air vents are built into the top o eachair separator. As Air Elimination systems have permanentseparation provided by the bladder or diaphragm betweenthe initial tank pre-charge and the system uid, no loss ofpre-charge air will occur.
