Cigarette Smoke / Nicotine

Growth of Moulds In area where the fabrics

and carpet flooring used are ‘hygroscopic’, water moisture will be trapped when the relative humidity is high and facilitate the growth of moulds.

The same happens inside the air circulation and air-conditioning facilities if excessive dusts are accumulated in the ducts or in the filters.

Growth of moulds generates unpleasant smell

Some operators may switch on the air-conditioning 24 hours a day to dilute the smell. This is very costly and not environmental friendly.

Spread of Bacteria and Virus

Guests and visitors may inadvertently bring bacteria and virus into the premises, particularly at time of epidemic, such as SARS, common flu, avian flu or the hand, foot and mouth diseases.

Bacteria and virus will be spread by circulation of contaminated air or by human contact of the contaminated surfaces such as wall, desk top and furniture.

In extreme cases, this may cause water contamination and food poisoning.

Organic Decay causing smell

Fruits and vegetables are perishable and go bad easily.

If kitchen and food preparation rooms are not cleaned properly, the remains of foods will decay and give out unpleasant smell.

Aged Building Facilities

Aged drain pipes, sewage pipes, and man-holes are often where the unpleasant smell is the strongest.

Very often, unpleasant smell is released from aged building facilities due to insufficient or inadequate maintenance

It can penetrate into other parts of the building through the air circulation and fresh air intake facilities.

Volatile Organic Compound

Formaldehyde and VOC are commonly used in the construction industry.

Traces of formaldehyde or VOC are often left over in newly renovated premises.

VOC is also released over time from building fabrics, decors or carpet flooring.

VOC in air may cause allergy to human beings.

Respireable Suspended Particulates

Respireable suspended particulates (RSP) vary in size. Some can be as small as a fraction of a micron.

Large RSP can be arrested by the filters of the air-conditioning system and the fresh air intake system

But the most dangerous are the minutes-size RSPs which can penetrate through the filters of air-conditioning system and the nasal system of human being.
