One such place for these exhibitions would be the Household Building (Building 9), where the home arts and crafts are displayed. Everything from paintings to patchwork can be found in this building. The artwork inside provides a unique look at our county, community, and the fair itself. Viewers are treated to many wonderful works of art while discovering new things about the people and places in the local community. Students and adults alike can submit their pieces before the fair begins. The building is then opened on the fourth day of the fair after judging is completed. There are many different categories and awards available, especially for school-age children. This building provides an out-of- school opportunity for children to display their creative works. This is very important because STEM has jumped to the forefront of learning, and, in some cases, the arts have taken a backseat role in education. This is unfortunate because the arts, both visual and performing, can provide children with very important life skills. Children develop a sense of innovation when they use their creative drive to make works of art. This can be very helpful in their adult lives as society constantly needs innovative problem solvers. Art also leads to children being more able to express themselves and their ideas, leading them to be better communicators in the future. Lastly, the arts are fun! Whether children are finger painting or knitting a scarf, creating their own piece of art is a way for kids to make learning enjoyable. By making the Household building accessible to everyone, both for viewing and exhibiting, the Great Frederick Fair has put children on the path to success. Farming has been a way of life for thousands upon thousands of people since ancient times, and this trend continues today. The practice of farming has become increasing efficient due to technological advances. Today’s machinery helps farmers produce better quality products in larger amounts. The Great Frederick Fair is a week-long showcase of the strides we have made in the agriculture industry. One of the most prominent examples of this fact is the Great Frederick Fair’s own Machinery Row. This is one of the largest equipment displays east of the Mississippi River! This exhibit boasts over 3,000,000 dollars worth of equipment and displays both antique and modern equipment. It’s incredible to see the progress we have made firsthand, while also appreciating the traditional way of doing things. Additionally, in recent years, technology has become an integral part of not just industry, but daily life. One of the most notable examples of this is the popularity of social media. Just as with the Fair’s impressive showcase of modern farming equipment, the Fair has also expanded their digital presence. Download the Frederick Fair mobile app for up-to-date information on vendors and events. Also, be sure to use the Fair’s hashtags, #greatfrederickfair and #2017GFF, when sharing your pictures and experiences at the fair! These social media connections help to extend the fair beyond the fairgrounds, making the Great Frederick Fair more accessible. This way, more people are able to experience the wonderful things the fair has to offer. THE ARTS MAKE Y OU SMART By Ariana Bennett TECHNOLOGY : H OW I T HAS C HANGED THE F AIR By Ariana Bennett

Kitty Gialanella, or as she’s known to most, Ms. Kitty, has been a photographer for the fair for 10 years, although she has been working with the fair for longer. When asked how long she has been a photographer she said, “I snapped my first pics at 12, and I’ve been doing it ever since.” Her favorite thing to photograph at the fair would be children or children with animals.

When asked what goals she hopes to accomplish with her photos, she said that the fair photographers’ ultimate goal is to ensure that their photos benefit the Fair and that they meet all the Fair’s advertising needs. Her secondary goal, she says, is “capturing moments or pictures that parents cannot while their child is showing”.

A major difficulty of her job would be time-lines. “It’s hard to get from, say, the beef barn to the dairy barn in 2 minutes when they need us,” she says. She also mentions that, currently, there are four professional photographers on the fairgrounds who each own their own company. This says that there is a lot of professional work being done, and it’s not just for fun.

Besides her wonderful photos, she boasts a lively personality and is an integral part of the Media Team here at the Great Frederick Fair.

Look around you. There are probably many people passing by, some eating food, some with official fair uniforms on, and many are with family and friends. For the past 155 years, the Great Frederick Fair has been a way to connect all of Frederick County. People from all walks of life come to enjoy the diverse attractions at the Fair every year. This annual event helps strengthen the overarching community of Frederick County.

Fair Day is one of the most special events at the Great Frederick Fair. This is a Frederick County Public School holiday which allows public school students the day off to enjoy and experience the fair. When the students attend the fair, they are exposed to the amazing agricultural education opportunities available at the Fair. There are many different exhibits all over the fairgrounds to showcase the diverse industries of Frederick County. Machinery Row, the Milky Way, the 4-H/FFA exhibits, and many others tell our community’s tale. Through exposure to these exhibits and the people who have created them, children gain an invaluable appreciation for their community and its way of life.

The Community Tent is another attraction which promotes the local community at the Great Frederick Fair. Located just inside Gate 4A, this tent provides a way for local businesses and companies to promote themselves. In doing so, they communicate with the community in which they reside and both parties benefit. Businesses are better able to discover the niche they fit into in our community, and residents are informed about a new or innovative product or service they may need. If you have ever visited Downtown Frederick, you understand the importance of local businesses in our county’s community. There is always more to discover about your community, and at the Great Frederick Fair is the perfect place to start.

Although, the most important part of the Fair community is not the agricultural education or the local businesses, it is you, the citizens of Frederick County. By simply coming out to the fair, you are helping to strengthen our community. Without you, there would be no community, and certainly no Great Frederick Fair. Everything seen here at the Fair is, in part, thanks to you. So thank you for coming out, we hope you enjoy everything we’ve built together.
