Digital Thread in Production:

Definition

An INTEGRATED INFORMATION INFRASTRUCTURE

to capture and understand what exactly is being produced

and how it was produced

• INTEGRATED: A seamless analysis environment which allows

integration of data / information related to production across

appropriate supply chain, OEM, & USAF domains

• INFORMATION: Everything pertinent to the “what” and “how”

of production from EMD through FRP, including information

created by analyzing other data/information

• INFRASTRUCTURE: IT infrastructure for data capture /

collection, storage, access, transfer, and analysis with

appropriate data protection

“Material Review Board (MRB) Digital Thread” Use Case

Strategy

• The Integrated Information Infrastructure does not exist

– Discrete capabilities exist in underlying technology areas

– Current capabilities can be exploited via integration

• Integration will not happen unless:

– Feasibility is proven

– Production benefits are quantified

• A demonstrable Digital Thread “Use Case” is needed

– Microcosm of full Digital Thread “Integrated Information Infrastructure” vision

• Diverse, but limited scope

– Information-rich environment for V&V and benefits quantification

• Feasibility demonstrable and benefits achievable within a finite time

– Readily understandable relevance across system lifecycle

• Impact to other portions of the acquisition lifecycle evident, but not quantifiable (initially)
