After an eventful year and final exams, schools close for summer holidays and reopen in the

first week of June. April is Autism Awareness month and AIKYA played an important role in

spreading awareness through events. In May, certain programs are available for students from

mainstream schools and outstation students and parents. However, St.Thomas mount centre

would function during May. Happy holidays!

Early Intervention outreach programme. AIKYA has been successful in placing some of their

students in regular mainstream schools and help them find suitable employment. Some of

AIKYA’s students have passed their 10th

standard through National Open School. AIKYA

A workshop on Autism was conducted at the NEYAM centre located at St. Thomas Mount.

Ms. Parvathy Viswanath, a doctor, and an occupational therapist spoke with the parents of

children with Autism. Ms. Parvathy said that children with special needs can be trained with

simple things at home such as chenna dhal or wheat dough instead of a costly lego game.

She also said that there are lot of people with Autism who have extraordinary skills in one

field such as singing or drawing. But, we cannot expect all children with Autism to have such

great skills. We need to be practical and accept few limitations.

.Case Study of Simrah with Autism who was trained at AIKYA:

Simrah came as a 3-year-old with a diagnosis of Autism by a leading

hospital in Chennai. She didn’t have eye contact, she was not

responding to her name, she did not like socialisation with other

children, and could not bond with her mother. She was like a beautiful

doll.

Simrah’s parents brought her to AIKYA. At AIKYA the girl was given

systematic training. She was trained to name pictures, play with toys,

hold a pencil, and do colouring. She was trained in communication,

socialisation, and motor skills. Slowly, she started responding to her

name, maintained eye contact and could sing and dance and eventually

perform on stage. She learnt all the concepts and learnt to read and

write.

The girl got a solution at AIKYA after a long search in many places

before AIKYA. Now, she has got admission in Church Park in UKG as

she is able to read and write.
