Chicago Midway Airport
In Complex Projects, Chicago Studio, the first quarter, we conducted a research on the location, regarding different aspects. The urban characteristics such as the typolo-gies, the infrastructures, the density, the uses, the transportation possibilities, and the public space were thoroughly studied in order to grasp the area of intervention.
In short, the Midway area is a suburban area, developed around Midway airport, strangely after its settlement there. The area provided an economical alternative to the loop chosen in an important extend by Irish immigrant families. In the following decades, however, the population changed as the descendants wouldn’t follow the parents’ choice. As a result, a Spanish origin population has moved in the area.
The majority of the residents are working class families with children (0-17 years old). The wish for a private house and garden is undeniable, as it is almost the only typolo-gy present. The repetition of similar housing and garage units results in a monotonous urban fabric that lacks a strong character. To that, contributes the fact that the area is mono-functional (almost only residential) resulting in having ghost streets during the day.

The airport was regarded as an opportunity in order to create a “landmark for the area” and to establish a strong identity. Engaging this peculiar situation instead of denying it was seen as the appropriate strategy.
The research question, therefore, was how to redesign the airport in order to provide a strong identity to the area, reverting the mono-functional character and the lack of public space.
![Page 14: Aikaterini Stamatelou portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.in/reader034/viewer/2022042903/568c52b81a28ab4916b7cd5d/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)

The existing configuration of the public part of the airport is extremely ineffective, denying any contact with the neighborhood, a fact that resulted in an uninspiring and unattractive public space. However the gates part of the airport has a pier configuration and it works effectively for its size. Therefore, it was considered wise to keep it.
Research question: How to redesign the airport effectively connecting it with the neighborhood.

The starting point for the design was developing the program. Realized and conceptual airport examples, specialized standards and guidelines were used for that purpose.
Finally, based on the previous steps, the optimal configuration was chosen, based on the existing situation, the complex program requirements, and the form and materialization possibilities that could render this building a landmark for the area.
Designing a landmark that could mark the transition between air and land and has a strong cultural meaning was an initial intention.
An interesting finding from the research was that there is a lack of cultural facilities for the area and place for the young people of the area. What is more, the majority of the schools seem to be failing.
Therefore, the airport – landmark could host certain cultural uses that could be experienced by both passengers and residents of the area.

Restoration and Intervention
For the restoration of the building complex in Paardenmarkt the main target was to combine private and public uses within the complex. The private uses include student housing, while the public, a library, a café-bar-restaurant and a gym.
The same architectural approach is present in the restoration of the old buildings and in the addition of the new volumes (restaurant and shading sys-tem). The new element should be distinct and recognizable, while the original character of the monument should be maintained as much as possible.

The Why Factory
The Tower is a vertical village, with private and public gardens for the residents. Each apartment is different (color, size, arrangement), in order to achieve diversity, in the complex.
Porosity is also an important principle. The apartments are arranged in a certain way, in order to achieve natural ventilation and view from every individual house.

Vision: Vertical Village
The concept is inspired by the idea of the verticall village, where the building itself becomes a landscape that consists of the individual houses with the fruit terraces.

The project is about the rehabilitation of an old tobacco warehouse inThessaloniki, Greece. The program included student housing facilities and also recreation space, a library, a cafe-bar and a restaurant, which are accommodated in new volumes, added to the existing complex and all together form a whole.

My goal was to develop a central atrium , therefore a part of the six floor vol-ume is removed, but its trace (the columns and beams) remain.
The stairwell is located in a new volume which “imitates” morphologically the tobacco warehouse (which accommodates the dormitories).
Those volumes are connected by a distinctive curved glass volume, which is also the entrance to the complex.

The assignment was about the design of a school in Kalmaria, a city next to the see in thessaloniki , Greece.
Challenging the typical school unit and inventing a new way of accomodating the educational functions was my intention.

As the building is characterised as “Preserved”, only minor changes to the form and structure are allowed. The new use is a public library, chosen because of the building’s internal characteristics.

Eastern Elevation- existing situation
The intervention and the addition were carried out with respect to the existing building.
My main goal was to show off the beauty of the old , Preserved Building-which used to host a boys’or-phanage - and to keep its original character.
One of the building’s previous phases was chosen), in which the main entrance is on a small balcony, access to which provide two small staircases.
As limited intervention could be done (even in the inside, for statical reasons) only certain doors change for safety reasons.

Conservation and Restoration
The materials that are used are: metal, glass and wood, all ,also, existing in the old building, but now used in a new , different way.
The result -and also the original goal- is the harmony and the cohesion of the complex. The “Old” and the “Young” coexist in harmony, are different and at the same time are part of a whole.
The addition of a small cafe- bar follows the same rules. My goal was the new building to respect the old one and to coexist in harmony.
The volume of the cafe-bar is a “small box” in analogy with the preserved building facing the entrance. An old existing warehouse, is also preserved and is united with the new volume with wooden movable louvers.

From Design to Construction
The aim of the project was to create a complete hotel unit (including a cafe-bar and a restaurant) accompanied by bathing facilities and a marina for small boats.
The concept is based on continuity and organic forms while all the buildings are connected either with constructed curves or with virtual ones. The hotel ‘s location -near the sea- inspired me to that direction. By trying to design the marine, I came up with the idea of a curb that unites all the buildings. The shape of the boats and ships also inspired us in order to “reverse” it and to develop the organic forms that host the public facilities.
The volume with the hotel’s rooms is the only one that has a normal geometric shape (part of circle) in order to separate itself from the public facilities.

The holiday house, 93m2, includes a living room and dining room, an open kitchen one master bedroom and a secondary one.
The house is divided in two zones,a public (living room, dining room, kitchen and a private bedrooms, wc).
The transparency of the facade is chosen according to the use. Therefore, the public zone, has a glass facade protected with movable blinds, while the private zone is less transparent and has smaller openings.

The glass facade permits the view to the outside and at the same time provides adequate ventilation (it is able to open-able in three sides) .
The blinds are rotating in order to permit the necessary shad-ing and in the opening areas, they are also sliding in order to allow movement to the outside.
