Loh’s AIESEC Experience

began in his first year in

Universiti Teknologi Malay-

sia. He was a junior member

in Out-Going Exchange and

after that, he was elected as

Director of Out-Going

Exchange during his second

year in AIESEC UTM. After a

fruitful year of leadership

experience, Loh decided to

experience AIESEC Go

Exchange Program. He

decided to go for Develop-

ment Traineeship in Taiwan.

Living and working in a dif-

ferent culture for 2 months,

his exchange experience

enriched his senses and

sharpened his mind. Follow-

ing his internship experi-

ences, Loh returned to serve

a term as Vice President of

Out-Going Exchange of

AIESEC UTM. Loh practiced

the soft skills that he gained

through his internship

experience, while learning to

work with people with

different personalities.

AIESEC has given him the

opportunity to work in cross-

cultural environment as well

as to improve both personal

and professional skills. He

truly understands himself,

the world and what he

wants in his life. Now as a

Vice President of Out-Going

Exchange, he encourages

young people to have life-

changin experience like his

by sending them for

exchange through AIESEC

UTM.

Which is more dangerous, a gun or a swim-

ming pool? What do schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common? Why do drug dealers still live with their moms? How much do parents really matter? How did the legalization of abortion affect the rate of violent crime? Freakonomics is a ground-breaking collaboration between Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner, an award-winning author and journalist. They usually begin with a mountain of data and a simple, unasked question. Some of these questions concern life-and-death issues; others have an

admittedly freakish quality. Thus the new field of study contained in this book: Freakonomics. Through forceful story-telling and wry insight, Levitt and Dubner show that economics is, at root, the study of incentives—how people get what they want, or need, especially when other people want or need the same thing. In Fr e ako nom ic s , th ey explore the hidden side of … well, everything. Read more! freakonomicsbook.com

Under Cross Red Ribbon Alert (CRRA) project, First in Touch (FIT) was held in August 2010, aiming at educating students

on HIV/AIDS through workshop. Among the activities lined up were video presentation and sharing from people living

with HIV which captured the hearts of participants. The highlight of the event would be the candle lighting section,

which drew a wonderful ending of the event.

“Through FIT, I know what is happen-

ing around the world right now-

the stigma that happens to the HIV posi-

tive people and how to fight against the

virus. It is not only about HIV/AIDS, but

creating a healthy and better life.”

Jason presented about Malaysia to the media and authorities in Poland!

Jason utilized his creativity to explain the beauty and attractiveness of Malaysia.

What did you do during your internship in Poland? I taught the preliminary school children English and took care of children from broken families. I taught them English and conducted games to create close bonding with them. What did you learned through your in-ternship? After living 2 months overseas, I am now confident to work abroad in future. Most of the children do not understand English, thus I used creative methods like games, origami and drawings to teach them Eng-lish and Malaysian culture. What makes your internship memora-ble ? AIESECers in Poland invited me to their gatherings and brought me to travel around. I felt sad towards the end of my internship because I had to say goodbye to the kids in children house. The head-master of children house took good care of me throughout my internship and that made me feel like home. Now I’m still keeping in touch with the headmasters of preliminary school and the person-in-charge of children house.

The Living Story — J.O.

by Yue Rong

I’m J.O, born with HIV. When I was born I was born a very sick child, sus-tained in an incubator for two weeks and was fed from tube. I was adopted and told that my birth mother was a drug addict with HIV. Sometimes, my birth mother would call and ask "is she dead yet" and my adopted mother would hang up the phone. Life was hard and at one point I stopped taking my medication. I would hide it under plants and things of that sort. I struggle with it because I'm 19 now and dating would seem very hard for me because I know one day I would have to tell them and I could possibly not go well.

Sometimes I can’t accept my life but I have to live with it. If I could tell something to people of any age who is infected, I’d say; ‘living with HIV/AIDS is the easy part, the hardest part is you just can't let it consume you as a person, physically and mentally be-cause we're in control, not the virus’. ( A d o p t e d f r o m A V E R T . o r g )

Have your say

Volume 3

‘HIV/AIDS does not reduce the quality

of a person. The infected person

does not lose his/her talents and

gifts by HIV. Why then should we

discriminate?'
