D&MT INJECTION MOULDINGThe injection moulding project consisted of two sections. An individ-ual ideation, development and design for manufacture part, and a group manufacture part.

The first, individual section consisted of brand identity research, widget ideation according to the brief and mould tool design, development and testing for said widget.

The second, group section consisted of selecting a widget/mould design combination which balanced feasibili-ty with complexity. This was then taken forward. Mould halves were programmed using Creo 2.0 for CNC manufacture from aluminium, donor parts were water jet cut from stainless steel and inserts were manufactured from mild steel. Test injections were carried out and adjustments made before a set of final injected widgets were made from LDPE.

Plans for mass manufacture were drawn up including new mould halves, new materials and new widget designs.

Upper mould half

Insert 7: Fits with inserts 5 & 6 to give the case its hollow cavity. The upper most layer sits slightly indented in from outer walls of 5 & 6 to create a lip that holds iPhone in place

Insert 4: The final cavity insert. Fits next to insert 3 to make up a wall of the main cavity. Screwed into place from above. Also acts to mould the shape of the logo.

Insert 5: Fits into one side of the main cavity made up by inserts 1-4. Con-nects with inserts 6 & 7 to give case its hollow cavity. Along with 6, ridges force polymer into aesthetic, ergo-nomic slits down each side.

Insert 6: Fits into other side of the main cavity alongside inserts 5 & 7. Same purpose as insert 5.

Insert 3: Fits with inserts 5 & 6 to give the case its hollow cavity. The upper most layer sits slightly indented in from outer walls of 5 & 6 to create a lip that holds iPhone in place

Insert 2: Completes cavity wall when in place. Also acts to mould the shape of the logo.

Insert 1: Screwed in from above. Fits into position to shape out the CAT logo in the base of the mould cavity.

USER O2 APP DESIGN EXPERIENCE

The brief: to design an innovative, interac-tive Connected Home concept that enhanc-es the experience of home life for an O2 customer. Then to demonstrate how the user will interact with your concept via a smartphone or tablet as part of the overall user experience.

To tackle this brief, individually I set out commencing user research with a scope of individuals, before narrowing this to a target market and carrying out focussed user research in greater depth. Once done, I collaborated with a team where we used our collective research to generate and develop ideas and concepts stemming from said research.

As a group we put together persona boards, concept boards and story boards before generating individual designs for an app which met the brief and was in line with the agreed concept - with out own twists on it. On top of connecting devices, our focus area for the connected home solution was a user’s morning, more specifically, their morning routine.

In connecting the home, there were devices which are not commonly considered “con-nectable” - such as the window, the bath, the coffee machine and the like - which I considered there to be an oppertunity to do so with. The different devices connected can be seen right, but in particular I was avid about connecting windows in the home using a smart glass technology, whereby the windows opacity can be a) controlled at the touch of a button and b) used in a waking system for the morning routine.

Connects the user with all different devices within the house, accessible at the touch of a button. Whether it means setting a bath to run on the train home from work or a cup of coffee for when you get in.

LIVINGFocussing particularly on a user’s morning, it focusses on creating a stress-free, hassle-free morning routine from duvet to door. Wake-up, coffee on, bath ready, recipe at hand, traffic alerts prepared, weather news and daily planner at the user’s fingertips.

Quick access to devices of the house on a reel in the home page means for a connected home, controllable from the app at any time and anywhere. Running a bath at a controlled depth and temperature without the worry of it overflowing, brewing a cup of coffee from bed, dimming the lights prior to a film, recording programmes and controlling the TV. All devices are connected and brought together in the home.

Emphasis on waking up in the morning and linking this to other possible devices for the smoothest, most enjoyable wake up process possible. Natural light is proven to induce a positive mood so I wanted to involve this in the waking process. Smart glass technology means control of the glass’ opacity. As a result it can be used to fade and allow natural light into the bedroom gradually, slowly waking the user into a naturally lit room. Use in unison with room lights depending on natural light intensity outside as well as radio or music allows for a customisable wake up process.

Weekly morning routine customisable day by day with specific wake up patterns, involving specified connected devices, in the way desired. Forward planning for future dates possible via Calendar feature.

SKULPTPRODUCT REDESIGN

Boots own brand electrical products are basic in their form and function. Our brief meant in groups, we were to redesign the electrical product put in front of us: hair clippers.

Product stripped, internals analysed, markets and users researched: we aimed our redesign at young profes-sionals, most importantly seeking a hygienic trim. We analysed this focus area, generating in depth UTE sheets. We conceptualised, developed aesthetics and ergonomics before foam and CAD modelling different forms before user testing and finalis-ing our design.

The hair clippers we redesigned origi-nally clogged heavily with hair, result-ing in the cleaning process being both a chore and disgusting. The separable design solves this problem, allowing the user to trim, separate and clean with ease, leaving no loose hairs and requiring no cleaning brush nor clean-ing fluid.

The internals performed in a similar way to the newly popular NutriBullet blender - meaning blades and motor and not directly connected, thus separable and capable of being washed with water (unlike current clippers on the market).

PERSONAL PROJECT

F CUSBrief: Identify a new product opportunity for which the form and interface is dedicated to a single software application and has the capacity to utilize additional downloads on-demand. This opportunity may be based around current needs or projected up to five years into the future.

FITNESS TRACKER - WORKOUT GUIDE

Attention to fitness, nutrition and personal well-being is ever increasing. This is true on a per-sonal level, but even more so in professional sporting institutes. Player fitness is fundamental

to the cause and both scrutinised and analysed more each year. The focus band is the first step towards an interactive smart gym, enabling total workout tracking and fitness analysis.
