AID has not been immune to the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. As the organization continues to navigate through this very unusual and unsettling time, community champions have risen to the occasion.

In late March, two generous AID supporters pledged to match all donations received from the community, dollar for dollar, up to $15,000. Astonishingly, AID reached and surpassed the $15,000 goal within one month of launching the matching campaign.

As the need to provide the best possible care to individuals who receive AID services continued, a new fundraiser was embarked upon. The Coleman Foundation partnered with AID and offered another matching opportunity for every dollar donated up to $25,000. Over the past seven years, the Coleman Foundation has provided matching grant opportunities to AID with a focus on Giving Tuesday (#ILGIVE), the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Once again, AID was humbled by the outpouring of support and soon reached and surpassed the $25,000 goal.

In total, AID has raised over $85,000 for important programs and services thanks to the two generous donor’s matching pledge campaign, The Coleman Foundation and the support of hundreds of AID champions

LETTER FROM AID PRESIDENTDear Friends,

OUR MISSION: To empower people with physical, developmental, intellectual and mental health challenges to enjoy lives of dignity and purpose

ABOUT AID: AID is a nonprofit, community-based organization that serves over 4,500 individuals throughout DeKalb, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, McHenry, suburban Cook and Will counties. Programs are available for individuals with physical or developmental disabilities and those in need of behavioral health services or crisis intervention. AID is a United Way partner agency and accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

FOR MORE INFORMATION: Please visit our website: AIDcares.org or call: AID Services: 877-AID-0001 (877-243-0001) Crisis Line: 630-966-9393

We are starting to see beyond the grey sky of the COVID-19 pandemic, but the storm continues. I would like to highlight a few important agency updates over the past few months:

• Our Community Integrated Living Arrangement (CILA) homes, I-CILA homes and Behavioral Health Residential Settings are open and our Community Support Team, Crisis Line of the Fox Valley and Victims’ Services staff are working with those in a mental health crisis. Community Day Services (CDS) are slated to reopen this fall.

• AID therapists and nurses are still supporting vulnerable people. We are taking every measure within our ability to keep our clients and staff safe.

• Our staff continues to do an incredible job making sure our clients have food, medicine and shelter; that they remain engaged with one another and their families; are apprised of current events and are working to promote physical and emotional self-care. We have ordered extra supplies and food, and staff are assisting clients in keeping their homes disinfected.

• We are nearing completion of the strategic plan for the next three years. Administration structure updates are currently taking place to improve programs and services for our consumers.

• The recent, senseless killing of yet another person of color has stretched our collective emotions of outrage, grief and anxiety to a breaking point. Since 1961, the Association for Individual Development (AID) has committed itself to empowering people with physical, developmental, intellectual and mental health challenges to enjoy lives of dignity and purpose. Our mission always has and always will be inclusive of all individuals regardless of race, color or creed. While we continue to search for answers and develop solutions to affect real change in America, we need not only to hear but also truly listen to the voices of people of color whose experiences and stories are essential threads in the fabric of society; of humanity. AID is committed to being part of these conversations and developing an ongoing advocacy action to push our organization, our communities, our state and our country towards meaningful change.

I truly appreciate the persistence of our dedicated staff and the unwavering support of our non-profit neighbors, local restaurants, community businesses and generous donors.

Behavioral Health interventions and psychiatry services are integral to successful recovery plans. Individuals can lead more fulfilling lives and participate in and contribute to their communities. Individuals experience barriers to treatment such as living in rural areas with little transportation opportunity or living with acute symptoms that create severe anxiety and stress and hinder recovery program participation.

Telehealth services can reach these individuals and facilitate access to remote psychiatric care and counseling. COVID-19 introduced a new barrier to service that has made telehealth services a vital component of treatment and recovery.

Individuals interested in accessing Telehealth services can call (877) 243-0001 or e-mail [email protected].

Fox Valley Grantmakers COVID-19 Response Fund Awarded to AIDOn April 10, 2020 The Fox Valley Grantmakers COVID-19 Response Fund awarded AID with $12,400 in COVID-19 relief funds. This grant assists AID in continuing to provide programs and services to all communities in the agency service area.

The fund was launched in March 2020 and is the collaborative work of Aurora Women’s Empowerment Foundation (AWEF), Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley (CFFRV), Dunham Fund (DF), Fox Valley United Way (FVUW), and INC Board.

Rapid-response grants made from the fund aid eligible non-profits like AID, who have demonstrated significant need as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. More than 30 non-profits applied to the special COVID-19 Grantmaking Program within its first week. A committee of representatives of these five grantmakers meets weekly to review applications and determine allocations.

“As grantmakers, we have mobilized quickly to respond to these needs and will continue to do so as we confront the effects of COVID-19 in the greater Fox Valley region. It is an honor to work alongside such talented and committed individuals who care so deeply about this community,” said Julie Christman, president and CEO of CFFRV.

While each request is important and reflects the struggle of all nonprofits, priority is being given to organizations supporting basic human needs including but not limited to food, shelter, safety, health, and mental health. “This level of interest in the grantmaking program reflects the level of need in the Fox River Valley,” said Scott Voris, chair of CFFRV. “We are proud to be a partner in committing our resources and networks toward a unified goal of supporting our community during this crisis.”

Thanks to this generous grant, AID was able to purchase new laptops for AID nurses, Behavioral Health professionals and other staff to continue to remotely deliver vital services to AID clients.

AID DeKalb Client SpotlightKatherine exemplifies the spirit of giving back to one’s community even in the midst of personal struggles. Although Katherine has had to cope with mental health and adversity in the community, she believes she has found her purpose and passion with the co-founding of the local “Taking Care of Our Caretakers” service.

This community program raises funds to buy food from local restaurants and delivers the meals to local health care workers. Not only does this allow Katherine to give back to her community, it also gives her the strength to address her own struggles.

In giving back to her community, Katherine provides sustainability to her community while at the same time demonstrating strength within herself. It is easy to fall into negative patterns, thinking, and attitudes in today’s world. Instead of falling into that negativity, Katherine has turned her own struggles into something positive by giving back to the DeKalb community.

AID congratulates Katherine on her current and future successes!

Illinois Fair Tax Amendment on November 2020 General Election BallotOn November 3, 2020 Illinois voters will have the opportunity to vote on the“Fair Tax” amendment. This amendment taxes wealthy individuals (the top 3%) on income over a quarter-million dollars a year—while the remaining 97% of tax filers receive a tax cut or pay no more than their current rate. The result of the passage of this amendment will raise more than $3 billion a year to invest in schools and human service organizations like AID.

What is the Fair Tax amendment? The Fair Tax amendment reforms the state constitution to eliminate the requirement that Illinois tax income at a single rate, allowing instead for higher rates for higher incomes and lower rates for people with low and moderate incomes.

Why do we need a Fair Tax reform? The current way of taxing income in Illinois is unfair and inadequate. Taxes fall too heavily on working people. Low-income households now pay almost double what the wealthiest pay in taxes as a share of their income.

The inadequacies of our current tax rates are apparent in our underfunded public services. Budget deficits at every level of government cause inflated property taxes and force harmful cuts to education, human services, health care, infrastructure, public safety and jobs.

What does the Fair Tax amendment mean for me?Fair Tax reform will lift the burden from the middle class and those struggling in lower socioeconomic brackets. 97% of taxpayers will get a tax cut or pay no more than they do now.

Fair Tax will require wealthy individuals to pay their fair share, only increasing taxes on those who make more than a $250,000 a year. The vast majority of the increases will be paid by millionaires and billionaires. Fair Tax reform will raise more than $3 billion a year that can help to fund education, health care, human services, state and local government, and responsibly pay the state’s bills.

How does Fair Tax become a reality?A ‘yes’ vote from 50% of all individuals voting in the election or more than 60% of those voting on the question on the November 2020 general election ballot is required for passage.

The Northern Illinois Food Bank provided credit to AID to purchase food for

individuals living in residential homes. AID is grateful for the tremendous

outpouring of support from fellow non-profits, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Congressman Sean Casten visited the AID Elgin Community Day Services

O’Shea Center to learn about the positive community impact of AID and the

future of the agency.

6

With the help of AID staff, residential client Lisa (and #1 Chicago Cubs fan!)

designed and painted the Cubby’s logo to adorn her wall. This is the perfect time

to learn a new skill!

Kendall County Community Food Pantry granted the AID Behavioral Health

Supported Living program weekly bulk pick-up of food during the COVID-19

crises. This allowed the agency to deliver food and items to a large portion of AID

clients in Kendall County.

State Representative Keith Wheeler donated over 200 protective face shields to

AID programs and services. Ben Marcum, District Director for State Rep. Wheeler

(middle) dropped off the face shields at the AID Administration Office in Aurora.

AID residential clients enjoy the warm weather by planting a garden. Thank you

to “We Grow Dreams Greenhouse & Garden Center” (West Chicago) for generously donating flowers for our

clients to beautify their homes!

Thanks to the generosity of The Arc of Illinois and the Illinois Council on

Developmental Disabilities, a COVID-19 Relief Fund allowed AID to purchase

iPads for clients. This helps individuals stay connected with family and friends

and also keep their minds active.

During National Nurses week 2020 (May 6 - May 12) AID recognized the

dedicated nurses who work tirelessly to provide exceptional medical care for our clients. Some clients even made

thoughtful thank you cards for our invaluable nurses.

Despite the circumstances, our residential clients still had a fun Easter

Sunday filled with egg hunts, egg toss and bingo games thanks to our

dedicated and caring staff.
