GSWG History Established Space Inflatables (later Gossamer
Spacecraft) Working Group (GSWG) in April 1998 Group has met formally every year at AIAA SDM and informally
(~twice/year)
John and Dave are conscripted at the 2001 SDM conference and work on formalization of the GSTC
The GSWG developed the GSTC charter and TAC presentation for the August 2001 TAC review
TAC informed the GSWG in October 2001 that 65 of the 66 TCs had approved our formation and thought STRTC would also…but they didn’t
The GSWG met with the STRTC April 22, 2002 and...

What is a Gossamer Spacecraft?
Examples: Antennas Solar Sails Solar Arrays Telescopes Habitats Solar concentrators Sunshades ED&L Systems Decoys Rovers Radiators Space suits
Technical Focus: Packing &
deployment methods & effects
Rigidization methods & materials
Membrane technology
Highly integrated, multi-functional components
Mission concept development
Non-linear, large deflection analysis
Gossamer spacecraft are systems that
have high deployed to
packed volume ratios
and are extremely low
in mass.

Why a Gossamer Spacecraft TC
Unique area that is rapidly growing in interest within the space community
No specific forum exists for Gossamer Spacecraft to promote: Technology development User education Space community awareness Cross-discipline interaction
Space systems effectiveness will increase through gossamer spacecraft advancement & application
Special forum to foster discussion on interrelated issues that are the heart of making a Gossamer system
The topic is emerging and is often shunned by various disciplines…needs its own forum to mature
AIAA TAC
GSTC 13
Committee Goals To establish Gossamer Spacecraft expertise within the AIAA
Provide a technical resource for AIAA Attract new members
To promote technical interchange between members of various disciplines within the space community Provide a forum for communication between technology
developers and mission planners Provide leadership & direction to the community Promote technical interchange with other AIAA TCs, AIAA
members, & other professional organizations Advance the understanding of Gossamer spacecraft within the
space community Sponsor conferences & sessions Technical publications (papers/journals/books) Student participation & activities Workshops & Website presentations

GSTC 14
Communications Plan Request a liaison from other
TCs attend one GSTC meeting per year and be include on “friends of GSTC list” (most will have opportunity at SDM Conf.)
Copy meeting minutes to other TCs and request feedback
Make presentations to other TCs at their meetings
Write Bi-annual interface summaries for inclusion with minutes
AIAA TCs the GSTC should interact with heavily: Structures Adaptive Structures Materials Space Systems Aerodynamic Decelerators Balloon Systems LTA
Communications are critical to meet our goals!

Proposed Scope of The Gossamer Spacecraft Technical Committee
The purpose of Gossamer Spacecraft Technical Committee (GSTC) is to develop and promote the science and technology of analyzing, designing, manufacturing, and evaluating the materials and components that are unique to gossamer inflatable, deployable, and membrane Spacecraft. This will be accomplished by providing a forum for technical interchange, by providing leadership and a collective informed decision making body (which will include industry, academia, and government). The GSTC will also encourage the development and dissemination of technical information, promote technology awareness through outreach activities such as workshops and website development, assist in the development of industry standards, and foster technology awareness through relations with other TCs and professional organizations.
