Annual Meetings8:00 – 9:30 a.m.Ballroom

Enjoy a continental breakfast as you join leaders of the Wisconsin Architects Foundation and AIA Wisconsin for updates on current initiatives to support members, increase public awareness, advocate for the profession and share knowledge. The agenda includes an opportunity to recognize individuals for their distinguished service to the profession of architecture. Featured speaker and President-Elect of the American Institute of Architects, Thomas Vonier, FAIA, will get the Convention started with a presentation on “Notes on Our Profession: Half Science, Half Art.”

Professional Development Seminars I9:45 – 11:15 a.m.Select from four concurrent seminar sessions.

A New Humanism Christian Sottile AIA Lecture HallIn this seminar presentation, Christian Sottile, AIA, a principal of the Savannah-based urban design firm Sottile & Sottile as well as the dean of the School of Building Arts at the Savannah College of Art and Design, will focus on various approaches to the planning process. He will address the art and science of urban design and why building for a more humane future is both timely and essential. The presentation will touch on how theorists over the centuries have sought and created human forms in architecture, juxtaposing appealing buildings with ones that are not, and connecting the very language we use to describe cities to the language of the body and hu-man perception. A case will be made for integrating a greater awareness of these connections as we develop more humane tools for urban design. By participating in this seminar, you will be able to recognize the elements of urban design that focus on putting the needs and well-being of people first, understand the benefits from more compact place making, describe how developing more connected networks of streets at a human scale increase safety and livability, and discuss how historical and contemporary ideas on human perception shape the built environment. This seminar is sponsored by MasterGraphics, Inc. (S1A: 1.5 LU/HSW hrs.)

Architectural Blogging – The Good, The Bad, and The Crazy Bob Borson AIA Hall of Ideas E & FSocial Media isn’t going away – and for most architects it might even seem like a waste of com-pany time and resources. In this seminar, Bob Borson, AIA, a principal of Malone Maxwell Borson Architects in Dallas, will discuss how starting his blog “Life of an Architect” has fundamentally been a tool for business development. As the person behind one of the world’s most popular architectural blogs, he has successfully bridged the gap and engaged multiple generations of architects and architectural enthusiasts by sharing his personal experiences, professional practice tips and anecdotes on what it’s like to work with and be an architect. He will explore the pros and cons and identify other related issues you should be aware of as you start your own journey into digital communication. By participating in this seminar, you will be able to describe how architectural firms can effectively use social media, explain the benefits of an effective social media campaign, illustrate how architects can leverage social media and connect with a broader audience, and analyze the value of the cost and benefits of blogging and using other communication tools. (S1B: 1.5 LU hrs.)

Good Firm Culture = More Prosperous Firm Expert PanelHall of Ideas H & I

There is a strong relationship between a healthy firm culture and a prosperous business enterprise. While it’s difficult to prescribe a “one-size-fits-all” culture for all firms, there is a need for the architecture profession to collect qualitative stories and quantitative information that can be shared as a resource for building stronger firms. This seminar features a panel discussion that will explore firm culture from different perspectives and discuss how it really can make a difference in retaining and attracting staff. Your firm’s culture is an amalgam of its values, principles, attitudes and behaviors. This seminar session will review the factors that influence firm culture, including leadership, individual and team behavior, staff development, collaboration and communication, environment and context, as well as the type of projects and clients. By participating in this seminar, you will be able to recognize the key factors for high-performing firm culture, discover why individuals resonate with certain cultures and not with others, describe how an integrated talent management strategy can help attract and retain staff, and examine the importance of job descriptions, performance reviews and professional development programs. (S1C: 1.5 LU/HSW hrs.)

Awards Luncheon11:30 a.m. – 1:15 p.m.Ballroom

Gather with friends, old and new, over lunch and join the celebration of excellence in architectural design and outstanding service to the organization. The Design Awards Committee will be announcing the projects selected to receive 2016 AIA Wisconsin Design Awards and recognizing the architects, owners and contractors responsible for this year’s award-winning building projects. Findorff Keynote Address Design at the Intersection of Art and ScienceTrung Le7:00 – 8:00 p.m. Lecture Hall

We live at a moment in history when the world is dramatically changing. According to architect Trung Le, a founding partner of Wonder, by Design, because of this exponential change, everything we do is an opportunity to ask different questions and to set a new agenda for Design and Architecture. During a career that has spanned over 25 years, Le has consistently produced award-winning projects that underscore his passion for changing the world through design. He launched The Third Teacher+ studio in 2010 within CannonDesign’s global education team. Wonder, by Design, was created in 2014 as an education design agency that lives at the intersection of learning, design and innovation. In his featured keynote address, Le will challenge all of us to embrace new possibilities for community and collaboration and for design and innovation and to deconstruct the cultural boundaries between Art and Science. By participating in this session, you will be able to identify the ways in which the mindset, practice and purpose of Architecture need to shift in response to change, recognize which of our previous practices and rituals we must hold onto – to anchor us in the work ahead, identify which habits and hallowed traditions we need to let go – to create space for something new to emerge naturally and with “urgent patience,” and recognize that boldly amplifying the intersection of art and science is the foundation of a shared invitation to respond to and co-create a more remarkable future. The keynote address is made possible by the underwriting support of platinum sponsor J.H. Findorff & Son. (K2A: 1 LU/HSW hr.)

Can the Work of the ‘Modern Masters’ be Sustainable? T. Gunny Harboe, FAIA Lecture HallThe iconic works of master architects such as Mies van der Rohe and Frank Lloyd Wright hold a special place as part of our collective cultural heritage. While their preservation is paramount, these buildings also need to function on a daily basis. What is the proper balance between preservation and performance and other modern building code requirements? What change can be accommodated that will allow these historic buildings to be truly sustainable for generations to come? Award-winning architect Gunny Harboe, FAIA, founder of Harboe Architects in Chicago, will explore these questions and more through the lens of several case studies, including Mies’ S.R. Crown Hall and Wright’s Taliesin West. By participating in this seminar, you will be able to identify what constitutes a master work of architecture, recognize the challenges faced by preservation architects in making a positive interven-tion into iconic works of architecture, describe several ways important works of modern architecture can be made more energy efficient and code compliant, and understand the complexities involved in determining if preserving National Historic Landmarks can be truly sustainable. (S2A: 1.5 LU/HSW hrs.)

The ADA & Universal DesignM. Bradley Gaskins, AIA Hall of Ideas E & FIn this seminar session, architect Brad Gaskins, AIA, managing principal at The McIntosh Group in Tulsa, will review how architects can identify accessibility barriers and solve commonly overlooked design problems related to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. In addition, you will discover the true meaning of “Universal Design” and how it relates to the ADA. A California Certified Accessibility Professional, ICC Certified Accessibility Inspector and a representative on the ANSI A117.1 Consensus Committee on Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities, Gaskins is using his expertise to shift the view of accessibility from a required regulation to something organizations should do for the right reasons to improve the quality of life for individuals. By participating in this seminar, you will be able to describe several innovative approaches available to the profession for achieving ADA compliance, recognize techniques that can help contractors be successful, identify hidden items in the ADA that many architects are not aware of, and explain the real meaning of “universal design.” This seminar is sponsored by the Wisconsin Architects Foundation. Immel Construction Keynote AddressBio-Inspired Design Chris Garvin, AIA 2:00 – 3:30 p.m.Lecture Hall

Humans have an innate biological connection to nature. In this keynote address, architect Chris Garvin, AIA, managing partner of the sustainability consulting and strategic planning firm Terrapin Bright Green, will talk about the intersection of nature and the built environment that connects human health, engineered systems and planetary ecological systems. He will explore biophilic design as a way to reconnect with nature for a healthy and sustainable future. Over the past two centuries, “modernizations” have disconnected us from our connection to nature, which has damaged both human health and the environment. As a result of recent scientific advancements, the true impact of our interaction with nature is beginning to be better understood. Meanwhile, for four billion years, organisms have been successfully adapting to changing environments, building materials, creating forms and organizing complex systems. Surrounded by these blueprints, Garvin notes that we only have to look to them to develop a resilient and regenerative society. Using design case studies and a review of scientific research, this keynote session will focus on answering the following questions: How can biophilic design create places to support our health and well-being? How can our cities become sustainable communities through a deeper understanding of ecosystem services and processes? What can we learn from nature that can be applied not only to the spaces we inhabit, but also to the technologies that fill them? By participating in this keynote lecture, you will be able to describe biophilic design, identify how biophilic design improves human health, explain how biomimicry can be used to create systems and materials to interconnect the built and natural environments for true sustainability, and recognize long-term sustainability requires an understanding of dynamic equilibrium through time that adjusts to changes in land-use, demographics and climate. This keynote address is made possible by the underwriting support of platinum sponsor Immel Construction. (K3A: 1.5 LU/HSW hrs.)

Professional Development Seminars III3:45 – 5:15 p.m.Select from three concurrent seminar sessions.

Presentation Skills: Self–Ideas–PlansDavid ZachLecture Hall While there is a wide variety in the different types of presentations, your success as a speaker will be based on how well you meet the needs of your audience and your ability to talk about your ideas clearly and succinctly. This seminar session by David Zach, a professionally trained futurist and professional speaker based in Milwaukee, is designed to provide practical tips and guidelines on making your presentations more polished, professional and powerful. It will address the presentation of self (e.g. personal style, manners and actions, handling audience reactions), the presentation of ideas (e.g. resources and tools, slide design, room layout) and the presentation of plans (e.g. time for audience discussion). The seminar will help you establish the skills to craft presentations around essential objectives and to present ideas with enthusiasm. By participating in the seminar, you will be able to describe how to organize content and determine audience objectives, examine audience engagement and create content that illustrates your point, recognize the art of presenting yourself – how to dress, how to interact and how to leave a positive impression, and identify resources and tools for developing better presentation skills. (S3A: 1.5 LU hrs.)

Ethics/Esthetics Smackdown: Science or Art? Victoria BeachHall of Ideas E & FThis seminar will explore the question of whether science or art is the better bet. Presenter Victoria Beach is not only the principal of her own architectural firm and the Vice-Mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea, she also is a published writer and national speaker on architectural ethics as well as a former chair of the AIA National Ethics Council. Many people believe that morality differentiates between good and evil. For professions, ethics can perform an altogether different role. Strong ethics can be a powerful tool for professions, making a difference between excellence or mediocrity, influence or irrelevance, and even between life or death. Architecture, however, was an art long before it was a profession. Can esthetics provide architecture a tool even more powerful than ethics? By participating in this seminar, you will be able to understand how written ethical codes protect and empower professions and the public, compare weak and strong professional codes and differentiate between professional ethics and other kinds of ethics, explore the fine line between duty-based (deontological) and results-based (consequentialist) morality, and test the moral limits of what kinds of commissions architects should accept and evaluate the role of aesthetics vs. ethics in a discipline based on both art and science. This seminar is sponsored by Ken Saiki Design.(S3B: 1.5 LU/HSW hrs.)

Building a Strategic Practice Evelyn Lee, AIA Hall of Ideas H & IWe are living in a world surrounded by the Internet of Things (IOT), where the amount of data being compiled by sensors and people as they move through the built environment is increasing exponentially. In this seminar session, Evelyn Lee, AIA, a senior strategist with MKThink in San Francisco, will look at ways you can begin utilizing and integrating data into your practice – not as a research endeavor, but as a way to better position yourself as a trusted advisor with your clients. Come learn how your client’s data will help you understand them better and how data can help you build a more strategic practice. By participating in this seminar, you will be able to gain knowledge about IOT technology and how it creates new avenues for revenue for architecture firms, identify various data sources that result in better outcomes for the decision-making process for your clients, list free and inexpensive resources available to support data integration into your firm’s practice, and recognize the business opportunities that result from strategic practice and how to put them to practice in your firm.
