AIA Columbus serves the architectural profession by supporting design professionals building our community. We provide education and services to our members, advocate positions that improve the quality of our region’s built environment and the professional climate for our practice to recognize leadership and achievement; and provide information and service to the public.

a message from our president

Dear Friends,Knowledge. Education. Outreach.

Earlier this year, our Chapter took a new look at these goals, which have guided us in recent years. We re-evaluated them and invested considerable resources to utilize them in new and enhanced ways for our Chapter through an updated strategic plan.

The challenges we set before ourselves included: •increasingtherelevanceofprogramming, focusingonknowledgedissemination •establishingapersonalconnectionforcommunity, industry, andprofessionalengagement

As 2008 draws to a close, I’m proud to report we continue to progress towards our vision to be the authoritative source for information pertaining to our profession, and our mission to be more visible in the wider community.

One highly visible result of our efforts is our updated website: www.aiacolumbus.org. We’ve spent significant resources over the past several months enhancing the content, look and navigation of the site. If you haven’t visited recently, please do so. You’ll find more photos, streaming video, and an improved separation of content for AIA Columbus members and the public.

This project is ongoing, but we’re excited about establishing our site as the credible resource and the “place” where information on architecture and design is presented and shared.

This summer, we launched a new advertising campaign built around the theme “Do You Know?” The colorful ads, which have appeared in BusinessFirst green and healthcare supplements, are designed to educate the public about the many ways architecture and design affect our lives. The first ad series focused on daylighting; the second on the role design plays in improving overall health. The ads direct the public to our website for more information.

In recent weeks, our Chapter celebrated the publication of TheAIAGuidetoColumbus, written by Columbus historic preservationists, Jeffrey T. Darbee and Nancy A. Recchie for

the Columbus Architecture Foundation and AIA Columbus. The book showcases significant buildings and neighborhoods in central Ohio and is illustrated with photographs and maps. It’s available in local bookstores and through the Ohio University Press at www.ohioswallow.com.

We also invited a number of national speakers to share their knowledge with our community through our lecture series. Topics included regional planning, sustainable design, historic preservation and building information modeling. I’m proud of the high quality of the speakers we were able to attract and look forward to more in the future.

I’ve shared with you just a sampling of the initiatives under way at AIA Columbus. Stay tuned for more exciting projects in the future as we continue to reach out to our membership and community.

programmingIn 2008, we set out to increase the relevance of our programming by carefully selecting a broad range of topics and speakers to appeal to the varying interests of our members and to the public. We made greater efforts to invite the public to hear the lectures given by our guest speakers and have been pleased with the results.

Maurice Cox Director of Design, National Endowment for the Arts

Architects possess skills that can be successfully applied beyond the built environment. Maurice Cox, director of design for the National Endowment for the Arts, shared examples of how architects can expand their reach in a session in October called the

“Role of the Citizen Architect.” At the NEA, Cox supervises the NEA grant-making process in design. Most recently, Cox helped graduate students create award-winning proposals for rebuilding affordable housing in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

Annual Meeting Keynote

Billy Tsien & Tod Williams In January, AIA Columbus teamed up with the Builders Exchange of Central Ohio to bring the high-profile husband and wife design team of Tod Williams, FAIA, and Billie Tsien, AIA, to Columbus to discuss their award-winning designs.

Williams and Tsien’s New York-based firm is among the most celebrated and critically acclaimed firms practicing in the world today and has been selected to design an addition to the Columbus Museum of Art.

Jim RostThe Arena District is one of the hottest development spots in central Ohio, an-chored by Nationwide Arena, the home of the Columbus Blue Jackets. In March, Jim Rost, Nationwide Realty Investor’s vice president of development and construc-tion, shared future development plans for the Arena District as it transforms from an event-based entertainment district to a mixed-use urban neighborhood with new residential projects, additional office and retail space and the new baseball stadium.

Kimon OnumaThe digital world presents unimaginable opportunities for the architecture profes-sion. In September, Kimon Onuma, FAIA, shared the possibilities of combining architecture, planning, programming and software development to create a new model of practice for the architecture profession and building industry. A pio-neer in the field of Building Information Modeling (BIM), Onuma is the creator of BIMStorms, which pave the way for mas-sive collaboration between owners, developers, architects, builders, econo-mists, engineers and the public.

Committee on the EnvironmentDesigning Toward SustainabilityTours and the Chapter’s annual Designing Toward Sustainability Award competition topped the agenda for the Committee on the Environment during the past year. The competition received a record number of submissions, including five built projects and seven unbuilt projects. There were two winners:

Dell Children’s HospitalAustin’s Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas, which opened in July 2007, was designed to be the first inpatient hospital to achieve LEED(Leadership In Energy and Environmen-tal Design) platinum-level certification. Designed by Karlsberger Companies and part of a former brownfield site, the 473,000-square-foot hospital features an on-site natural gas-fired energy plant that

produces electricity 70 percent more ef-ficiently than an off-site coal-fired plant. The plant’s byproduct – steam – is used to supply chilled water to the hospital and surrounding buildings.

Grange Audubon CenterGrange Insurance Audubon Center, owned by the National Audubon Society, will open in summer 2009. Designed by DesignGroup, the 18,000-square-foot Grange Insurance Audubon Center is also being built on a former brownfield site, the Whittier Peninsula on the east bank of the Scioto River. The passive-solar building, which will be the site of a mix of nature education and bird study for children and adults, will utilize recycled content and reclaimed materials in a variety of forms. It will seek LEED silver-level certification.

HealthcareKnowledge Community

Tours to some of the region’s top health-care facilities highlighted the Healthcare Forum’s activities last year. The newest addition to central Ohio’s healthcare scene, Dublin Methodist Hospital, was the first tour of the past program year. Called the real “Fable Hospital” by the Center for Health Design, the facility is designed to change the way healthcare is delivered in central Ohio and beyond.

In June, members visited the recently-completed expansion to the Richard M. Ross Heart Hospital at The Ohio State University Medical Center. Topics covered included strategies for implementing patient-focused care delivery through a healing environment, optimal unit layout and the universal room care delivery model.

For the final tour of the calendar year this fall, participants visited the 700,000-square-foot J-West Expansion at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Presenters, who included representatives from Nationwide Children’s Hospital, FKP/Andrews, H.A. Williams, and Turner Construction Company, covered a broad spectrum of clinical, operational, design and construction issues.

KnowledgeAIA Columbus’ Knowledge Communities offered programs during the past year focusing on engaging, relevant topics in a variety of formats to appeal to the Chapter’s diverse membership. Opportunities ranged from tours of several of Ohio’s leading medical facilities and high-profile sustainable design buildings to the Chapter’s annual sustainable design competition and Lunch & Learns offered by AIA Providers through our Small Project Practitioners Forum.

Continuing EducationAIA Columbus offered its members the opportunity to earn nearly 70 AIA Learning Units in 2008. In addition to programs preceding our Chapter meet-ings, the Continuing Education Commit-tee planned and organized a wide variety of in-depth learning opportunities for our members. Sessions were offered at different times to appeal to the varying schedules among our members. Programs included a look at the 2007 changes to the AIA Contract Documents; case studies; Web-based project manage-ment; a discussion focusing on using

architecture to create culture; and an exploration of the future of design titled “Where Is Design Going?”

LEED ReviewFor members and other allied profession-als interested in sustainable design, the Chapter sponsored a number of day-long LEED review seminars throughout the year taught by Professional Publications Inc., an independent publisher of profes-sional licensing exam review material. Participants received a comprehensive review of the fundamentals of green building and examined and distin-

guished how the United States Green Building Coun-cil’s LEED-NC Rating System applies to a project scenario. Review sessions covered an introduction to the LEED rating system, what to expect on LEED exams, overview of the LEED certification process, integrated design, the fundamentals of green building, and green building resources.

eduCationProviding content-rich continuing education programs available to our members and related industry professionals is the goal of AIA Columbus, and we are proud to report another year of unsurpassed opportunities.

Bus TourUniversity of Cincinnati

Broad & HighCase Study:

A transformation is taking place on one of Downtown’s high-profile, historic corners, the northeast corner of Broad and High Streets. Luxury condominiums, street-level retail, class-A office space, horizontal rows of colorfully animated digital ticker tapes, multi-media billboards, and the local NBC-TV studio are creating a vibrant and exciting atmosphere rivaling that of Times Square. Bill Riat, president of Casto Communities, and Ed Feher of Glavan Feher Architects shared details of this exciting development in May.

In June, AIA Columbus organized a bus tour for members to the University of Cin-cinnati. Architectural highlights included Steger Student Life Center, Campus Recre-ation Center, Tangeman University Center (pictured right), and the Lindner Athletic Center. We also visited the ContemporaryArt Center located downtown.

Designing for the FutureArchitecture Columbus 2007: “Designing for the Future,” the Chapter’s annual event celebrating outstanding architecture and its role in enhancing a community’s quality of life occurred in early December. The celebration began with a jury critique of the 2007 Honor Award winners led by Randy Brown, FAIA/LEED-AP, principal of Randy Brown Architects, Omaha, Nebraska. Residences, museums, education facilities, mixed-used developments and retail projects were among the 40 submissions in 2007. Jurors selected three Honor Award winners and one Merit Award winner. The next day Brown was the keynote speaker at InDesign: Fabrication, a day of educational programming for design and construction professionals and focused on architectural solutions for the heartland. Architecture Columbus culminated with the Preview Party and Gala annually attended by architects, young professionals, clients and many central Ohio community and business leaders.

DoYou Know? Do you know that “life gets better when the lights are out?” Or that architecture is “just what the doctor ordered?” AIA Columbus answered both of those questions in a series of ads that appeared in Business First this past summer and fall. The ads are a new public awareness campaign designed to educate the public about how the many ways architecture and design touch our everyday lives. The first ads focused on sustainability and appeared in a “green” supplement; the second set of ads focused on the benefits good design delivers in healthcare facilities and appeared in a healthcare supplement.

Canstruction In 2008, eight architecture and construction firms shifted their focus from designing and building build-ings to creating 10-foot by 10-foot sculptures made from thousands of cans and boxes of food to support the Mid-Ohio FoodBank as part of the national Canstruction® design/build competition and exhibit. Through our efforts, we raised 35,000 meals, which equates to 30,000 pounds of food. This coming year AIA Colum-bus will once again team with Giant Eagle, Pepsi, the Mid-Ohio FoodBank and the Society for Design Adminis-tration to sponsor the event, which will begin in early March at COSI.

American Institute of Architects

AIA Columbus Golf OutingSince 2002, AIA Columbus has hosted an annual golf outing. Each year, this sold-out, day-long event brings together more than 150 professionals throughout central Ohio to raise funds for the AIA Columbus Associate Scholarship at the Knowlton School of Architecture at The Ohio State University. The event, held at OSU’s Scarlet Course, also promotes interaction between architects, allied professionals, engineers, contractors, subcontractors and material suppliers.

Project ArchitectureIn 2007, AIA Columbus, in cooperation with local schools, building and design professionals, announced the launch of Project Architecture in central Ohio elementary schools, a first-of-its-kind-proj-ect in the area. This past year, once again elementary students learned about design and building with the help

of local architects and contractors. “Our goal is to create greater awareness of the built environment and plant the seeds for a life-long appreciation of architecture. The best place to start building that ap-preciation is with the youngest members of our communities,” said Marcia Conrad, AIA, Project Architecture chair.

Community& outreaChAIA Columbus is committed to giving back to the community. Through mem-ber volunteer efforts reaching out to students, leadership opportunities in the community and public awareness campaigns to the public, the Chapter continually seeks to inform and demonstrate the important role architects play in our community beyond that which impacts the built environment.

Columbus, the largest city in Ohio, is well-known for its rich mix of historical and modern archi-tecture. The region’s architecturally significant buildings and neighborhoods, as well as central Ohio’s architectural heritage, were showcased for the first time in 2008 in a new book called The AIA Guide to Columbus. Written by Columbus historic preservationists, Jeffrey T. Darbee and Nancy A. Recchie, for the Columbus Architecture Foundation and The American Institute of Archi-tects, Columbus Chapter.

Founded in 1913 and nearing our 100th anniversary, AIA Columbus is one of the largest urban components of the American Institute of Architects in the Midwest with members from throughout the Central Ohio area – serving a 30-county area from Mansfield to Marietta and Columbus to Lancaster. We have over 750 individual and affiliated members and are the largest component in Ohio. We seek to be the authoritative source for information on the built environment and to be the credible voice of the profession.
