Here is a question for you.

What do you get as a present for a man?

Ok I have to admit „Father‟s Day‟ is in my mind as are

a couple of family birthdays coming up, but what do

you get for a man – „they are hard to buy for‟ as my old

aunt used to say. Part of me realises that we are so

lucky to have the problem. We live in a world where

we have enough. So much so that we have the option to

use some of our excess wealth to buy presents for our

nearest and dearest.

Then some gentlemen have consuming hobbies so we can be sure that

anything relating to that hobby will bring pleasure. A sophisticated or quirky

tool for a practical job works for some. A book on their favourite subject can

be good. Recorded music or a tickets for a band or experience related to their

favourite star or personality will „go down well‟ for others. Some like new

clothes or – well socks are always useful! Yes it can still be tricky.

The gift given with the best intentions does not always work of course. I

always used to buy golf balls for my dad when he retired until one day mum

told me that he had around 200. He was sharp eyed and used to regularly find

more balls on the golf course than he ever lost! He was really sweet though

and had always looked pleased at unwrapping another six such offerings!

One thing that we all need male or female, young or old, is respect. Treating

everyone – including our men folk with honour is important. Not just for the

hard work they have done and still do today but for all they contribute. This is

what makes any physical gift special. Yes men make mistakes – we all do.

Sometimes we all let ourselves down and do things that make others respect

us less – that is unfortunate. And yes respect has to be earned. However

memories can be sadly short and the hard work, early mornings and late

nights, concentration, effort, and so much more, can easily be forgotten.

Christians believe God made us in his image. So for Christians showing

respect for others, male or female, recognises the Creator in his creation.

So with Father‟s day in mind - to all – those who are physically fathers and all

those men who contribute to our communities in so many ways – thank you.

As the kids say – “respect man”.

( and if you could just drop a few hints as to what you would like for

Christmas it would be appreciated!)

The Herald 100 years ago May and June 1914

May, wet start (needed), then fine and dry (cold & wet, mid-month).

Shap Agricultural Society‟s AGM is in the Kings Arms Hotel, Shap, Saturday 9th,

4pm – J. G. Lowis, Secretary, Shap. (No report of it, though).

Shap Easter Vestry, 7th, in Church, 12 there, Rev.W.H. Crompton in chair. Mr. J.

G. Lowis (churchwarden) absent (ill). The parish is £5-10s-8d in hand (now

£442). Collections totalled £71 (=£5680, 2014). Mr Winster queried the burial

fees, the vicar said that the 10s.6d. was paid from his own pocket by Mr.

Whiteside the then Vicar. The Vestry voted that the Vicar revise the fee. (10/6

then = £42 now). [Mr. Winster always had an awkward quibble for this meeting].

Dobbie Pearson, travelling labourer, well known locally; real name William, was

reduced to a stay in the Kirkby Stephen Workhouse, but left to walk to Shap‟s. On

the way he fell ill, and was found beset by stomach upset. He died at 3.15am

Sunday 3rd. Inquest. He was from Reagill.

The Fell Pony Association‟s Stallion Show at Shap, Monday 4th, had 8 stallions

forward, “a good entry” for the £40 prize for the best one to travel the farms of

Orton, Shap, and Bampton. Winner was Heather Blossom, 4 years, shown by

Mrs. Dorie Daniel Hill, Orton.

Cricket: Shap 71, Temple Sowerby 18.

Died: at Springside, Shap, 28th April, Jane, wife of William Atkinson, 38. Died at

Shap 12th, Sarah, widow of Robert Huck, age not said.

June, fine & warm, except 7th-9th (stormy & cold), and 17th-18th (thunderstorms).

Shap Band of Hope was in Penrith 18th for the annual Vale of Eden

Demonstration. (3000 there).

Shap bobby is now P.C.Green (moved from Harrington).

The Workhouse‟s Master can now clothe any inmate he thinks needs it, on his/her

leaving the House.

Shap UDC voted to ban parking of caravans in the Market Square.

A Daimler 35hp. cabriolet, worth £1000 [now £80,000], caught fire on Shap Fell,

miles from anywhere. Its 4 men, all from Leeds, leapt for their lives. Soon, it was

burnt out, and they were stuck till another car came by and took them to Kendal.

Cricket, Shap is doing well this season.

Relief at Green Farm, their dead beast, was not dead from anthrax after all.

Died: at Jarrow, 12th, William Martin of Shap, 75, at Mountain View, Shap, 22nd,

William Crabtree, late of Burnley, 71, at Mountain View, Shap, 6th Elizabeth,

widow of Mr. James Clark, yeoman, Green Farm, Wet Sleddale, and later of

Shap, aged 68; no children. She was the daughter of the late Mr. John

Douthwaite.

Roger Highton 1965 - 2014

Many of you will remember Roger. Sadly, he died on 9th April at his home

near York following a long illness.

He came to Shap in 1997 to take up the post of Head Teacher at Shap C of E

school and along with his wife, Helen, and children, Jack and Elizabeth lived

in the village and became very much involved in the community.

Enthusiasm was a word most people would associate with Roger. During his

four years in charge, he instigated improvements to the fabric of the school,

whilst channeling a great amount of energy into the everyday duties as

headmaster. He was also responsible for setting up the CDC, and it always

gave him great pleasure to know that it is still a vibrant functioning part of

the community. He was so pleased at the success of the CDC that a couple of

years ago he made a special 200 mile round trip to present the awards.

During his time at Shap, he gave great encouragement to all pupils regardless

of ability. He saw potential in adults too, and gave support and advice to

many, particularly those considering a change of direction.

On a personal level, he always got the most from life, and even his illness

did not diminish his verve for partaking in the many outdoor pursuits he so

enjoyed. He had a very positive view of people, life and living it. His was a

life well lived !

The family are currently raising funds for MacMillan Cancer Support. As

part of that effort, Jack is running in the York 10km race on 3rd August. If

SHAP MEMORIAL HALL

You may have noticed the lovely new solid oak doors which have

recently been put on the Memorial Hall Porch. This work was enabled

by a very generous bequest to the Village Hall by the late Mrs Amy

Farrer.

Amy was a native of Crosby Garrett but she adopted Shap and lived

here for many years. Many of you will remember her when she ran

Midtown Stores.

Many people and groups benefitted from her kind and generous spirit.

Can you help to keep the Day Centre at Shap open? This is an appeal on behalf of Age UK Carlisle and Eden for a Volunteer to host a

home day care group at the Wasdale centre in Shap.

The role would involve;

Being at the centre before members arrive

Setting up the tea and biscuits for arrival

Making and serving a two course home cooked meal

Joining in activities such as a quiz, dominoes, bingo, cards, crafts or any

other pastimes you may wish to include.

Members (usually four per session) arrive at approximately 10.30am and leave

around 3.00pm. The host will be paid £12 by Age UK and receive £6 from each

member attending to cover meals and refreshments.

This Day Centre fulfils an important need for those living in social isolation within

the community or who may have few family members. Those attending look for-

ward to their day out very much. The group meets every Monday. If you think this

opportunity is right for you please call Alison Davies of Age UK Carlisle and Eden

on 01228 536673 for further details.

Open Meeting re Tata‘s application to quarry below water table – 21st May ‗14 The Green Room at Shap was full for the Open Meeting arranged by Shap Parish

Council. Tata had declined to be formally represented but had written to say any

individuals with concerns could go to discuss these with them at the works. A good

number of Tata employees who live in Shap were present as were members of Shap

Parish Council. Representations were made by those who are opposed to the plans

to quarry below the water table. Major concerns sited were; damage to natural

water sources and the impact this would have on wildlife and the viability of local

farming businesses, potential for flooding, effects of vertical blasting (damage to

buildings and walls), weaknesses in the model used to project possible effects, lack

of mitigation, inadequacy of a restoration bond, ineffective consultation by Tata.

Quarrying below the water table could cause further irreparable damage to the

environment only to gain a limited resource. If Tata can continue to operate by

bringing in limestone from elsewhere then local jobs would not be at risk. If you

have views on this issue please make them known to Shap Parish Council be-

fore 10th June and to CCC Planning Dept.(details on website below) before 20th

June.

concerns people have visit: http://www.shapfellquarryconcerns.wordpress.com/

Free VEG events help Eden get growing

If you‟d like to grow food but don‟t know where to

start, come and see how people across Eden are

turning their lawns and tubs into veg patches.

The Visiting Edible Gardens (VEG) programme

sees residents opening up their gardens and veg

plots to visitors each month until winter, organised by the Penrith and Eden

District Freegle group. All the events are free, and are part of Freegle‟s

„Grow Your Own‟ campaign to help people across the district grow food.

“VEG gives people a chance to see what grows in Eden, ask questions, get

tips, meet other growers, and even get some free plants and seeds,” said

Chris Cant from Freegle, which is a free website where people can pass on

things they no longer need, or ask for things they do want – including

gardening items.

The June VEG event is in Church Brough, where a new resident has begun

planting out a fruit and veg garden (29 June, 2pm). In July, there‟s an

opportunity to visit an established garden and polytunnel in Glassonby, with

experienced grower Peter Clarke (20 July, 2pm).

For full details and to book a space, visit www.penrithact.org.uk/veg or call

Chris Cant on 01931 713240.

The Freegle ‘Grow Your Own’ campaign is part of the Sustain Eden programme,

funded by the Big Lottery and managed by Cumbria Action for Sustainability

(CAfS).

SHAP C OF E PRIMARY SCHOOL

Once again we are very busy in school with many exciting activities and visits taking place. The Year 5/6 children enjoyed a visit to the river at Keld and worked with staff from Eden Rivers Trust measuring the flow of the river, the depth and identifying all the creatures that they caught with their nets! Both the nursery/reception class and the Year1/2 class have visited Winlatter forest for an exciting day which included hunting the Gruffalo! The children in Y3/4 went to Swindale farm to see the lambs and work with Amy from the RSPB. Our Year 6 children have worked very hard towards their SAT‟s papers which were completed this week and they could finally relax with a visit to the cafe for a drink and a cake! We have many exciting plans for the summer term including a history

week beginning 2nd June. (Hear all about it in our next report!).

COMMUNITY WOODLAND Last year the Parish Council kindly gave permission for the small wood at the south end of the village (known as Force Beck) to be managed as a community woodland. The first community event took place on Good Friday when 9 people planted about 100 trees (oaks, alders, beech, box and an apple). They also planted bluebells and picked out about 10 sacks of litter. The immediate intention is to make the wood safe for the school and other groups to use. To this end, when the necessary materials have been acquired, the boundary alongside the road will be fenced (and gated). Some improvement of fencing along the railway boundary has already occurred. This work is presently being done without a budget, and kind donations of serviceable fence and gate materials is almost complete. If you think you may have fence posts and staples that would be useful, or just want to be involved in this new village effort, please contact; Dave Corrie at the Old Spa Shop (716250) or Peter Dicken at Cob Cottage (716133).

SHAP SWIMMING POOL—The new season has begun!

The pool is looking lovely and we have a lot of people to thank for all their hard work, donations and support! Sandy Carr for the Gas boiler check, Dave Stuchberry for checking the Electrics, Penrith Tool Hire for the hire of the pressure washing equipment and Rob Leckie for the hire of his pressure washer, J.T. Atkinson for the provision of materials, Shap Parish Council for the provision of winter covers at the end of this season, various people who have kindly donated funds and everyone who has fixed, painted, cleaned in preparation for opening. A BIG THANK YOU!! We couldn’t do it without you! Finally a huge thank you to Peter and Paula for all their help and advice, and for passing on the pool to us in tip-top condition! We are applying for a large grant to fix the exterior walls and we need YOUR help! Please take a form from the pool and give your feedback about what the pool means to you! The pool is an amazing facility for the village and brings in lots of visitors. A fantastic team of dedicated volunteers help to run and maintain the pool, however we do struggle with funds as it is also incredibly costly. We would like to update many of the smaller facilities at the pool e.g. Lockers, so any donations are greatly received!

You can now switch to a cheaper tariff for your gas and electricity right here in Eden, thanks to a new service launched by Opt4 Community Energy in April. Opt4, a not-for-profit organisation based in Penrith, is now accredited to take you through the whole process of switching providers: from checking for the best available tariffs, through to getting the switch done for you. By choosing Opt4 when you want to change energy providers you’ll save yourself money on your energy bills and you’ll also be helping the community. For every switch Opt4 carries out, the energy companies pay Opt4 a small one-off commission at no cost to the customer, and all profit will be reinvested in energy efficiency and renewable energy schemes that have the support of the Cumbrian community. If you’d like to get onto a cheaper tariff for your gas or electricity, just ring 01768 593110 or visit www.opt-4.org. If you haven't switched for a while, depending on your usage you could be paying several hundred pounds more than you need to!

Shap Graveyard

I have recently been approached by a stonemason on behalf of a number of local

families requesting a fully polished head stone in Shap Graveyard. The Churchyard

Regulation only allows ministers to grant permission for memorials between certain

perameters. In the Churchyard Regulations memorials have to be part polished i.e. not

polished on the back and sides.

With the support of the Archdeacon, Kevin Roberts, I have approached His Honour

Judge Tattersall, Chancellor of the Diocese, for special permission to permit fully pol-

ished stones in Shap graveyard. In view of the distance from the church and the

Chancellor has granted an exemption for Shap graveyard only. This is not for any

other churchyard in the Diocese and does not waver any other stipulations in the Grave-

yard Regulations appertaining to Shap Graveyard.

I am sorry it has taken so long to sort this out . Beverley Lock.
