Commodore’s Message I hope you all had a great time participating in the Autumn Regatta – it was good to see so many (104) boats out on the water. My congratulations go to all the winners, whose names appear on page 14. Once again our thanks go to our sponsors McLaren, Canaletto (UK), SHK Private, Small Luxury Hotels of the World, Laurent Perrier Champagne, BACARDI and CARLSBERG.

On 15 and 16 September the Champion of Champions match racing was held at Middle Island. This used to be organised every year but it hasn’t been held for a few years and it’s now hoped that it will be resurrected as an annual event. Congratulations to this year’s winners, Greg Farrell and his team from the Etchells Class.

I hope you remembered to get your entry forms and fees in for the St. Regis International China Coast Regatta and the Hong Kong to Hainan Race! Coming up of course we have the first race of the Top Dog Trophy Series, the Lipton Trophy on 10 November. And don’t forget to get your entries in for the Tommy Bahama Around the Island Race on 11 November – entry deadline is 5 November. Also coming up in November we have 6 Class Champs – Lasers, J/80s, Flying 15s, Etchells, Impalas and Dragons. And speaking of entry forms, those of you interested in competing in the China Cup International Regatta in Shenzhen (26 to 29 October), only have until 4 October to get your entry in! (Although late entries may be accepted up to 14 October at the discretion of the race committee.) The Club will as usual be providing the race management for this regatta.

After a lull over the summer, both the Outrigger and Rowing teams are gearing up for their next big challenges at the ATIR and the Hong Kong Rowing Championships. The Outriggers have even been participating in events overseas, with a group travelling to Hamilton Island, Australia (see page 24) and also to a more recent race in Kona, Hawaii.

REVISED LATE SETTLEMENT ADMINISTRATIoN FEESAll members will know that they are required by the Club’s bye-laws to settle their accounts by the end of the month in which the statement is presented. Where payments are late, the Club implements its late payment policy of reminder letters, for which an administration charge is levied.

The vast majority of members settle on time and there will inevitably be occasions when a member overlooks a payment (perhaps not noticing that their autopay limit is insufficient to cover the debt) or has some other reasons for delaying payment. However an analysis of the administration charges has highlighted that some members fail to abide by the Club’s bye-laws too frequently and this results in a significant amount of administration work to issue reminders and follow up with settlements.

As a result, the General Committee has reviewed the administration charge to be levied and the following revised scale of charges will come into effect from 1 October 2012.

• If amember receives threeSecondReminders in any12-month period, then the late payment administrationcharge will increase to $1,000 for any further reminders (whether First or Second) until such time as there has been six months with no reminders issued;

• If a member receives six Second Reminders in any 12-month period, the administration fee will be furtherincreased to $1,500 for any further reminders (whether First or Second) until such time as there has been six months with no reminders issued.

Any member objecting to the additional administration fee will need to seek the approval of the General Manager to have the Second Reminder, which acts as the trigger for such increased fee, to be disregarded.

To ensure that the system is fair to all members, any reminder letters issued prior to the 1 October deadline will be disregarded as far as the new rolling, annual system of reminder letters is concerned.

General Manager’s MessageThe sailing season has now well and truly started with the Autumn Regatta held last month, and a whole host of regattas coming up in October and November.

In addition to the Tommy Bahama Around the Island Race on 11 November, we are looking into the possibility of introducing an Around Middle Island Race on 10 November in Optimists, and inviting Xu Li Jia, the 2012 Olympic gold medallist in the women’s Laser

Radial fleet, to come and participate. Details are yet to be confirmed, so watch this space!

I hope that members are enjoying our many new partnerships with major brands like McLaren, SHK Private, St. Regis, PAL ZILERI and SKYY Vodka. These brands have not only added test drive experiences, exclusive dinners and parties to our races and regattas, thereby enhancing the value and reputation of our calendar of events, but these partnerships also reinforce the prestige of the Club.

By the time you read this, Club representatives will have attended the 7th ICOYC Commodores’ Forum in Hamble where we led a

segment on Effective Communications as well as being invited to give presentations on Strategic Planning and Club Fleets. We will also have extended an invitation to all the clubs to come to Hong Kong when we will host the 8th Forum in November 2013. The timing of this year’s Forum does not allow us to fully report in this issue, but we shall have a write-up in the next issue of Ahoy!.

On a housekeeping matter, may I remind all members that they are required to settle their accounts by the end of the month in which their statement is presented. The majority of members do pay on time but unfortunately some do not abide by this bye-law, resulting in a lot of additional administrative work. If payment is late, there is an administration charge levied and General Committee has decided to review this with effect from 1 October 2012. Full details are given at the bottom of this page and I would urge you to familiarise yourself with the process in order to avoid incurring extra charges on your Club statement.

In response to growing concerns over the extent of ‘unauthorised access’ to their premises, Hebe Haven Yacht Club have raised their level of onsite security, and now require all of their members to carry their membership cards with them at all times whilst on Club premises. Members of RHKYC wishing to access Hebe Haven, including boarding and disembarking from the RHKYC sampan service at Hebe Haven, are asked to carry their RHKYC membership card and to present it if requested. Members who employ boat crew who might want to use the sampan service / gain access to Hebe Haven’s premises should arrange for a boat crew card from our Marine Office. Any such crew should also carry their card with them at all times.

There will be criminal activity at the Club this month – but only on stage, or rather on the Main Lawn, when the Scandal of the Kellett Diamond takes place on 9 October. This promises to be a fun evening and it is the first time in many years that we have had live theatre at the Club. Don’t forget that also this month we have the John Duval Wine Dinner on 18 October in the Compass Room but before that, on 6 October, we have the very last of this year’s poolside parties with huge inflatable.

Finally, this issue of Ahoy! represents the first under the responsibility of the Club’s PR Department and I would just like to take this opportunity to wish them every success with this exciting project and also to sincerely thank Suzy Rayment for all that she has done over the past 14 years to bring Ahoy! to the point of being a well-respected and professional Club magazine that members look forward to reading each month.

Kong, racing for 11 classes and divisions was scheduled to get underway with the Division 2 Big Boats at 1350hrs on Day 1, with Day 2 starting at 1110hrs.

Victoria Harbour was showing in all her finery at midday on Day 1, when a preliminary check of winds was carried out. A steady 6.5 to 8kts easterly looked promising and Race Officer Marty Kaye elected to start the fleet at Hung Hom and send them eastwards to Shau Kei Wan and Tai Koo Shing.

Lady Luck was not playing ball though and by the time the Flying Fifteen fleet was on the start line, a localised thunderstorm was precipitating heavily on the start area. The passing storm also caused the wind to back round, giving the later classes a challenging start.

While the storm abated, the wind never really recovered, and a very slow afternoon followed. Constantly monitoring the positions of the various classes on the water, Kaye elected to shorten the Big Boats Divisions 2 and 3 at Shau Kei Wan, the Ruffian and Pandora fleets at Kowloon Buoy, and all other classes at Dock Buoy.

There is a great deal of construction work going on in, adjacent to and around Hong Kong’s harbour at present, and there followed a long evening of protests, as those boats which had been observed entering the various exclusion zones were brought to book.

Perhaps lured by the prospect of a McLaren test drive, a total of 104 competitors braved the inauspicious weather forecasts to participate in the Regatta and, in spite of a quiet day on the water on Day 1 coupled with a worse forecast for Day 2, Kellett Island was humming first thing on Sunday morning with the assembled throng discussing wind, tide, exclusion zones and all manner of other factors which might affect their enjoyment of the day’s scheduled two races.

Whatever ritual sacrifices the RO had made overnight were worth it! Competitors were rewarded with a 10-12kts easterly, blowing straight down Victoria Harbour from Lei Yue Mun Gap. Not wanting to make it too easy, the construction exclusion zones had been relocated, and the classes were instructed not to set any courses including Kowloon Buoy or Dock Buoy roundings, as those areas were out of bounds.

The first race of the day started bang on schedule, with the slower fleets following a windward-leeward loop to Tai Koo Shing and

the faster boats to Shau Kei Wan. In the event, the wind held so well that all the boats apart from the Pandora fleet were allowed to continue to two laps of their course, before being shortened at Dock Buoy in order to get the final race underway with as little delay as possible.

Conscious that the harbour breeze often dies at around 1500hrs or so, and keen to make the most of the prevailing 11kts, Kaye elected to stay on anchor, lay an ODM and start the next race with no course changes. Only two boats were recorded OCS for the entire regatta, Whiskey Jack, which went on to win Big Boat Division 2, and Etchells Kung Fu Fighting, both exonerating themselves and continuing to race.

Perhaps as compensation for Saturday, the breeze held all afternoon and sailors were treated to a rare experience in Hong Kong sailing – breeze, sun, clear skies and clean air, all in one package.

While a significant number of protests were ongoing, the recently formed Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club Pipe Band entertained the crowd to a medley of Scottish tunes, while the bar flowed with Laurent Perrier Champagne, BACARDI Black and CARLSBERG. It could be argued there were worse places to be!

A rowdy and well-attended prizegiving finally got underway at 1930hrs, with prizes being presented by Max Chen from McLaren and Juliana Fung from SHK Private. The winners listed on page 11 were awarded ‘best in class’, which included a complimentary three-day/two-night stay at any Small Luxury Hotel of the World.

An exclusive dinner event co-hosted by CANALETTO, a new luxury property development in London, U.K., and SHK Private Wealth Management was held in conjunction with the Autumn Regatta on Wednesday 5 September. Sponsors, invited guests, committee members and members of the Club were treated to Laurent Perrier champagne on arrival and wines from the CASTEL label throughout the evening. W ith a total of 33 entrants over the course of the series, and a regular weekly turn out of over 25 boats, there was no shortage of enthusiasm for this summer’s Friday night

Sunset Series.

While most Fridays rewarded competitors with clear skies and a bit of breeze, Race 5 was cancelled due to the after-effects of Tropical Storm Doksuri and sailors were on tenterhooks on the final Friday, waiting to see if the Observatory would drop the T3 signal associated with Tropical Storm Kai Tak to enable them to complete the series in style.

Sadly, the signal was lowered too late to get all the boats launched, and sailors were instead invited to attend an early prizegiving on the Main Lawn. You had to be ‘in it to win it’ and of the top eight boats; only 3 x 11 had missed a single race.

Congratulations go to Cacafuego, helmed by Allessandro Schueeli, for holding onto a slim lead to lift the Sunset Series Trophy ahead of the Mowsers on Sky’s The Limit in second overall and Sam Chan’s Noisy Forefather II in third. The top six was rounded out by Jimmy Farquhar on 3 x 11, ahead of Ffirecracker, sailed by Team Malone / Phillips and Suzanne Godfrey and Richard Kendall’s Etchells, Capoeira, in sixth. Nick Burns was surprised to lift the Stewart Trophy for most firsts, having taken first place twice with Gunga Din.

A huge thank you to the volunteer Race Officers from the Classes who manned the start box – Joe Roels and Virgile Bertrand, Tristan Stewart, Mark Jukes, Naoki Ishihara, Raymond Fung, Nelson Tsai, Andrew Moore, Mark Phillips, Chris Maden, Simon Crockett and Harrison Ellery-McLean. competed this year, in light to moderate harbour conditions, on a course that we sail regularly and which requires all the skill, concentration and luck of a routine, weekend race. Since family commitments have begun to take precedence over her active yacht racing, Viv Peters is not often seen out racing, but she was on top form for the Ladies’ Race aboard 3 x 11 (787). Having jumped into an early lead from the start, she never looked like surrendering. Second to fourth places were more hotly contested with Suzanne Godfrey sailing Capoeira (1046) coming back from a mediocre start and sailing upwind with remarkable speed to come in second. Lauren Mead on Gunga Din (1243) was third, Ida Cheung on Mind the Bumps (1344) fourth, with Rita Yau on Meihem (696) next. At the

rear on the finishing line, but possibly lacking regular Etchells experience, were Akiko Sakai on Fidler’s Green (1133), Lucinda Ho on Blitzwaggon (413) and Vanessa Coates on The Battler (903).

There were post-race drinks on the dock as usual, including Champagne, and the great annual prizegiving event followed that same night. The renowned playwright and Hong Kong Etchells grandee, Jimmy Farquhar, produced his latest masterpiece Great Olympians to commemorate the season’s prizes. The photos speak for themselves, as the fleet dressed for the occasion.

Following the cabaret of the Great Olympians, the prizegiving recognised and rewarded the results shown on the right.

Rating at 1.098, we were to be in IRC 2, up against Quokka, Inga, six other J111s, J122s and countless First 40s.

Targets for the week? We didn’t want to be the last placed J111, and we wanted to be top half of the overall IRC 2 fleet. Anything else would be a bonus.

Race 1 could have been better; a good start but a bad case of ‘the slows’ didn’t seem to augur well for the week, and 14kts to 0kts in 2.5 seconds on a spinnaker run that came to an inelegant halt on Ryde Sands put us out of the game that day. A spinnaker sheet around our prop compounded our misery, and we remain grateful for a motor-boat

owner (bless ‘em) for hauling us back off the sand. Once back at Cowes, an inspection dive showed no damage from the sand-bank, but there was some delamination of the fairing compound from the keel…in fact the fairing had mostly fallen off. That was a relief, at least we knew why we were slow!!

J Boats took the boat back to Hamble that night, and effected a temporary repair on the Sunday, hence our un-scheduled lay-day and a DNC for Race 2.

Back to the Regatta, and with only one discard, we were now carrying a 35 in our overall series score, so we could relax in the now absolute

certainty that we wouldn’t be troubling the podium positions, so pressure off.

Mojito returned through the morning mist to Trinity Landing, and Race 3 on the Monday was better, with improved speed, still a lack of height against some other boats but at least we recorded a finish with a 16th place, so just above mid-fleet. Rafting up post-race next to McFly, another J111, we compared rigs, and ours was significantly softer, so Steveo wound us up a fair bit to cope with the 20kts or so of wind speed we had been getting so far. The Monday evening was also a time for our local experts to walk off the boat, for reasons best known to themselves, which could have left us somewhat in the pooh, but we had used our lay-day wisely and had already met with Andrew Strachan and Peter Jarman (both from Stella) who were at Cowes to race on a Sonata that had lost its mast in race 1; and once they discovered that a new mast would not arrive in time, they both jumped on Mojito.

With a fully Hong Kong team now in place (a heady mix of RHKYC and HHYC members), a bunch of people who all gelled well and pulled together, and a further tightened rig, in Race 4 we were suddenly the fastest and highest-pointing J111 on the course, and despite dropping to 9th on the line and 12th corrected after a strong first half of the race, we were all very pleased with our new-found pace and team dynamic.

On the racing front, all we probably needed from then on was a few more windward leewards, but alas there were very few pure beats on offer, and only about an hour of running all week (in our total race time of 23 hours), with most of the regatta spent on a diet of white sail and power reaching, processions and luffing matches, starboard roundings, and leeward drops; and we don’t do much of any of these in Hong Kong.

The locals were clearly better at this reaching thing as well, but in their defence, the race officials were challenged with unusual southerly direction winds for some of the week. Race 5 was more normal sailing conditions in the Solent, with a SW breeze giving us a white sail reach and beat out west towards Hurst, and several zig-zag runs back


north. Seeing the western Solent for the first time in the week, and in sun, and getting to use our delightful pink A2 as well was a real novelty and a highlight; so this race was probably the most enjoyable. We were 10th to finish, and 13th on handicap, and we had also taken two wins over 3 of the J111s as well by this time, so progress was indeed being made.

For Race 6 we had a good start, and after a tight kite reach, we were back in the eastern Solent, around the Portsmouth forts again in some quite strong air, and a 12th in the fleet. This despite breaking our A2, and swapping to the A0 on one of the legs.

For the final Race 7 the course was out west, with this time a proper beat for a start. Steveo placed us well on the start line with a Figaro under us, and we quickly rolled them, and the Xp38 Vixter as well, and we also climbed

higher and lost Shmoking Joe (J111) from our hip as well. Things were looking so good as we also stole away from J111 J-Dream a few tacks later. With breeze in the high-teens we had two runs with the A4; still in a good position, but we botched our last gybe (driver error!), wrapped the kite round the forestay, and lost many places while we sorted out the mess, and sailed bare headed.

We then had two dull procession reaches, both on a heading of 77……yawn…..but with 5 minutes of kite in the middle….hooray!

All things considered, a 15th in the last race could have been worse, but we were all gunning for a top 10 that day, so we felt we had under-achieved.

In the final standings, our 18th overall meant we finished just below our half way ‘target’ of the 35 boats, but we weren’t the last J111. However, of our last 5 races we were pacing

at 13th overall, and 5th best J111, so that was more the real picture.

Lessons learned?1. Solent mark roundings are scary2. We needed more time on the boat

pre-regatta3. We found the boat went better sailing

with friends/mates, rather than experts that we hadn’t sailed with before.

4. It was great fun, and a fantastic learning exercise

Will we go back? Of course we would love to, as a great bond was formed, and so we are pressuring some of the crew to get their wallet out and order a boat for next year…..and we’ll crew!! Finally, thanks very much to Steve, Gary, Nick, Huw, Sandra, Andrew and Peter; and without this great team, Nick’s dream of us doing our first Cowes Week would never have been realised.

Instead of aiming to win a stand-alone event, each team had to work out a way to ensure everybody rowed or paddled once in the varied events whilst still trying to gain enough points for an overall win. Do you select crews for consistency, or do you aim to have clear wins in some races and sacrifice others? The strategies are still evolving…

The rowing teams – ‘Damage’ and ‘Force’ – competed in the Men’s 4x, Mixed 4x, Mixed

2x, and both the Men’s and Women’s 1x. The outrigger teams – ‘Typhoon’ and ‘Storm’ – raced in Mixed OC6 and in the OC2 for all types – men, women and mixed. It was hoped that the groups could mix at the end of the day to form the teams ‘Typhoon Damage’ and ‘Storm Force’ for a dragon boat race, but time ran short.

‘Damage’ was the clear winner in the rowing with 15 points to 3, but in the outrigger event, it was much closer with ‘Storm’ taking the prizes 9 points to 6. The only complaint came

events, it was decided that for this year’s Opening Regatta, rowing would trial the format.’

On a lighter note, after the prizegiving the rowers demonstrated what scavenging ‘kit-hounds’ they are by attacking the bags of ‘on sale’ uniform and training kit items that were being cleared from the Ship Shop.

For the second year in a row, members of the RHKYC Outrigger Section teamed up with rival team HKOCC to participate in

the Hamilton Island Cup outrigger race in beautiful Queensland, Australia. The four-day outrigger event culminated in one of the region’s toughest 42k outrigger canoe change races. The event attracted paddlers from Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Papa New Guinea, Hawaii… and Hong Kong!

Day 1 consisted of the 250m OC1/OC2 sprint races, the 8km OC1/OC2 marathon, and 16km OC1/OC2 marathon races. RHKYC members Jeff Winterkorn and Claire Stewart took 2nd in the 8km OC2 mixed division, while Katherine Lynch and Katerina Vichou took 2nd in the 16km OC2 mixed division.

Day 2 consisted of the 500m OC6 races and the 16km OC6 marathon. The Hong Kong teams competed in the men’s and women’s open divisions, which are the most hotly contested divisions in the 16km race. The men’s team was lucky enough to have 25-time Hammo finisher, Colin Bartley, steering them around the 16k course. Colin set the team up with great lines all along the track. Great steering from Colin, coupled with a strong work ethic from the crew, allowed the boys to come in 7th in a field of top Australian teams. The women’s canoe had an equally good steerswoman in Katherine Lynch, and finished 7th in a very strong women’s.

Day 3 consisted of the 1000m OC6 sprint races and the King of the Hill running race. The team made a valiant effort in all races, but it was just not meant to be for the combined clubs. The rest of the day was spent preparing the canoes for the big race the next day: eating, hydrating, and planning the best lines.

Day 4 brought the main event, the 42km OC6 change race around Hamilton Island. The conditions were absolutely perfect, with clear skies and a light southeasterly wind at 15kts. Most of the course was fast and furious, with only 1.5m swells, but as always there was some challenging water through a channel in an area that paddlers like to call ‘Heartbreak Hill’. Both Hong Kong teams got off to a good start and made it safely through the first channel pass. The men’s team

made a change just before re-entering the channel for the second time, and really put the power down through Heartbreak Hill to move up five positions before the long hard grind out and around Pentecost Island. The crew tucked in close to the island and was able to get a good jump on a strong Brisbane crew. After the island came a long section back to Cat’s Eye beach. The crew was able to take advantage of the swells from behind and put some distance between them and Brisbane, but Brisbane was not done yet and the last 1km turned into an all-out sprint to the line with the Brisbane crew just pipping Hong Kong over the line in 3hrs 52mins. The women’s team followed shortly thereafter in 4hrs 10 mins. In the end, both teams finished in 7th in their respective divisions. For reference, the winning club, Outrigger Australia, finished in 2hrs 58mins, just shy of the course record.

Next year is the 30th anniversary of the Hamilton Island Cup, and the RHKYC Outrigger Section is already making arrangements to participate as a Club. Next year’s race will expand to include outrigger canoeing, surf ski, SUP and dragon boat racing.

des robinson boaT namingThe Club recently named one its rowing boats in memory of Des Robinson (1937-2012), who was a great athlete in many sports, but best known at RHKYC for his rowing and for starting the dragon boat team.

Martin Wilcox trophyOn 31 August and 1 September the Squash Section held its annual handicap tournament, which has been named the Martin Wilcox Trophy in memory of our dear friend and erstwhile competitor. The 20 players were given handicaps ranging from -14 to +11 and randomly split into 4 pools. On Friday, everyone played the others in their pool in a game that was first to 20. At the end of 4 hours of frenzied squash the points were tallied so that on the Saturday the players from each group winning the most points would play off for the Cup, while the runners-up would play for the Plate and those who finished third moved to the Bowl. Those of us not finishing in the top 3 got the advantage of being able to start drinking early on Saturday. Once the order of play for Saturday had been decided it was straight to the Bistro (and then Bar) for some carbohydrate replenishment while Bruce Hut introduced us to the wit and wisdom of Cheech and Chong.

For the Saturday, it was decided that the games would be played to 25 (but strangely the handicaps weren’t increased...). The Bowl semi-finals were: Gareth Williams v. Yannick Kennel, and Tom Burns v. Adrian Pierse. Yannick and Tom are two of our most improved players and showed it in their matches, running out comfortable winners against two of our more experienced competitors. We were then expecting a tight final, especially as they both had the same handicap. Yannick started well early to take the lead but Tom was able to peg him back and then just kept going, in the end running out a comfortable 25/15 winner.

In the Plate semi-finals it was: Mark Galloway v Andrew Sullivan, and Ewan Copeland v Chris Kaye. Andrew gave Mark an 11-shot start, and despite Mark playing well managed to peg him back to tie the scores at 24 all. So with just 1 point left and it all to play for, the smart money was on Andrew, being one of the Club’s best players. Unfortunately for him, he managed to smack the ball into the tin, giving Mark the victory. In the other semi, Chris Kaye had 7 shots to make up on Ewan and struggled a bit early, but then Ewan started to tire and with Chris full of running (being one of our younger players at 40) he was able to take a 25/20 win. In the final Mark showed some signs of weariness from his game with Andrew, while Chris kept on running, to take the Plate with a 25/19 victory.

In the Cup semi-finals it was Angelo Iannazzo v Elliot Froidevaux, and Stephen Ho v Philippe Bonnet. Elliot was the tournament scratch-market at -14 while Angelo’s handicap was +5. Angelo started well and knew he had to go for winners as long rallies would suit Elliot. However, to the crowd’s dismay Elliot was able to catch Angelo and just sneak past him for a 25/23 victory. Stephen also had his work cut out for him, starting 9 points behind Philippe. However his greater experience served him well as he ran out a 25/20 winner. So the final saw Elliot v Stephen in a battle of two of the lower handicaps. Stephen tried to keep up with Elliot early in some long rallies. However Elliot’s greater fitness came to the fore and he took the cup with a 25/16 victory. We all then headed to the American Club for dinner and the presentation ceremony.

Internal League august box a: So who is going to do it? Who is going to beat Mansoor! For the second consecutive month Mansoor managed to score the maximum points of 25, winning all his matches. He is followed by Andrew Sullivan and Paul Denham with 20 and 18 points respectively. Since Mansoor will not be playing next month, Francis Longuepee will stay in the A group.

box b: Tom Burns tops this group again and will bring his skills to A group next month. Frank Van Kempen will be travelling next month, opening the door to Darren Sugden in Group A. Bob Ikin was injured and could not properly defend himself.

box C: Jonathan Chamberlain, our newcomer, scored 23 points, just one point ahead of Angelo Ianazzo. They will both be promoted to B group.

box D: Chris Brookes, 22, and Yannick Kennel, 20, have led this group and they will both be playing in B next month.

I hope that everyone enjoyed the Autumn Regatta and congratulations to those who ended up on the podium with silverware. Traditionally, October is the best month of the year for sailing in Hong Kong and with some major races and regattas for the Big Boat fleet scheduled for every weekend this month, it is a great opportunity to get out on the water to experience some great racing in Hong Kong waters.

Weekend Sail TrainingOnce again the demand for sessions on Saturdays and Sundays has grown year on year. This is fantastic news and we have increased capacity as much as we can. Currently we can accommodate 18 sailors for Saturday morning Optimist sessions, 18 in the Silver Squad and 12 sailors each in the morning and afternoon of the Sunday Youth Sailing Club. Gold Squad has been moved to Sunday mornings and will be coached by Richard. There are normally two sessions per month and we have split the autumn term into two blocks, giving members two opportunities to have priority by signing up one month in advance.

School Holiday Sail TrainingThese weekday sessions are planned for the October half-term and Christmas holidays. This is the first year (we know about) that the October half-term school holidays have been all in the same week; in the past the ESF holidays have always been the week before or after the international schools. We already expect that we will be over-subscribed for the October half-term holidays – even though we did manage to squeeze in some extra courses over the long October weekend. Again, members do have priority if they sign up one month before the first course date.

Cadet Sharks Racing SquadsThe ABC Opening Regatta, 1 and 2 SeptemberThis was the first regatta of the season and the Sharks youth sailors were out in force with 32 cadets representing the Club at the weekend. This included a number of new sailors to the squad including Max Manley, Duncan Gregor, Aiden Long, Samuel and Amy Hopkins. We look forward to seeing these sailors develop this season and we are sure we will be able to report more good news.

Our experienced sailors also had a good weekend and there were quite a few prize-winners.

Adult Sail TrainingWe will run keelboat courses throughout the season and we will be able to cover both asymmetric and symmetric spinnaker practice by utilising both J/80s and Beneteau Platus. Although slightly more challenging, the symmetric spinnaker on the Beneteaus is similar to the spinnaker on many of the Class boats that race from Kellett Island on most Saturday afternoons. By mastering the crew work required for these spinnakers, you will have more opportunities to secure a regular crewing place on members’ yachts for Club racing. with the resumption of regular weekend Class racing at middle island, shelter Cove and Causeway Bay, this is perhaps an opportune time to draw members’ attention to the bye-laws introduced earlier this year clarifying the use of pontoons at our three Clubhouses.

CLass raCiNg PriOrityThe pontoons are principally provided and reserved for the launching and mooring of Class racing boats that are stored on the hardstanding at our three Clubhouses. These boats (Dragons, Sportsboats, Etchells, Impalas, Ruffians, Pandoras, Flying Fifteens and J/80s) are launched on Friday and Saturday morning ready for Saturday afternoon racing and are lifted out again late on Saturday and on Sunday.

In order for the Club to be able to handle the launching and recovery of up to 140 boats at three locations each weekend over the season, it is a requirement that members’ boats (other than Class racing yachts) are off the pontoons by 0900hrs on the day preceding Class racing. Boats may return to the pontoon the day after racing finishes and once space is available. If there is Saturday racing, this would mean a blackout period on pontoon use from 0900hrs on Friday to 0900hrs on Sunday at the earliest. On weekends where we are racing both days, then the pontoon must be cleared from Friday to Monday.

The Marine Office will try to contact members whose boats are still alongside on Thursday requesting them to move back to their mooring, but this may

not be possible in all cases. In the event that your boat is still alongside on the day before Class racing, then our marine staff will arrange to tow your boat to her mooring. A charge for this service applies.

duratiON OF stay aLONgsidePreviously, a maximum three-day stay alongside has only been applicable at Shelter Cove, but this is now the case for Kellett Island and Middle Island pontoons as well. Charges apply for boats that remain alongside for longer than three days each week without making a prior arrangement with the Club’s Marine Office. We will always endeavour to accommodate requests for an extended stay alongside but in order to manage our limited pontoon space-equitably and effectively, we do rely on members’ co-operation.

middLe isLaNd PONtOONWe recently had a case at Middle Island where the pontoon was seriously damaged as a direct result of a 65’ yacht laying alongside in rough weather. The pontoon at Middle Island is a lightweight modular system designed for the mooring of smaller yachts, and the bye-laws limit the maximum boat size alongside to 30’ LOA. Members wishing to moor

boats of over 30’ LOA should approach the Middle Island Marine Supervisor, who will assess whether prevailing conditions are suitable for oversized yachts to use the pontoon. Oversized yachts moored alongside the pontoon which have not received prior approval may be asked to leave.

CLass BOat – mOOriNg eQuiPmeNtThe Club’s Marine staff handle the launching and mooring of members’ boats on racing weekends. Given the number of boats launched at each venue, and the limit on pontoon space, we have no choice but to raft boats up alongside each other. We are reliant on members equipping their boats with suitable mooring gear so that the boats can be safely secured. Boats moored at our pontoons (particularly at Middle Island and Kellett Island) are subject to significant movement and shock loading on the pontoons as a result of wave / wake action. Please could you ensure that your boat is equipped with:

•Atleastfourfenders;clearlymarkedwiththeboatname / sail number, large enough, fully inflated, fitted with fender whips that are long enough and strong enough. As a guide we would recommend fenders of at least 22cm (9”) in diameter for all RHKYC Class boats.

•Highstretchmooringlinesofappropriatediameter(between 8mm to 14mm depending on the boat size). At a minimum, two dedicated mooring lines that are at least the length of the boat, and preferably more.

•Wellmounted / robust strong points ormooringcleats for the attachment of mooring lines.

sPeediNg iN the tyPhOON sheLterWith the relocation of our pontoon closer to the entrance of the Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter, there has been a significant increase in the impact on, and damage to, moored boats as a result of the wake of pleasure vessels and commercial craft exceeding the 5kts speed limit whilst entering and leaving the typhoon shelter. The Club maintains close contact with the Hong Kong Marine Department (MD) and the Central Wanchai Bypass contractors, and complaints against offenders are registered with MD on a regular basis. The Club will be installing additional HD security cameras; one of which will cover the fairway close to the pontoon – but we would also seek the assistance of members in helping us to combat this problem. MD has advised us that if we are able to provide (i) photographic evidence (and, even better a video) that shows the license number of the speeding vessel and (ii) a reasonable idea of the speed, then they will consider prosecution. Given that these days most mobile phones have a camera function, if you are around the pontoon area and see a speeding boat kicking up wake please try to get a video or even a still photo and send it to the Club’s Marine Office. We will follow up every such case with the Marine Department.

John duval started his own wine label in 2003, after 29 years as winemaker with Penfolds, one of Australia’s most famous wineries, where he was appointed Chief Winemaker in 1986. With the support of his team in the Barossa, he

secured a number of awards for the company including Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in London in 1989, and Red Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine Challenge in London in 1991 and again in 2000. He also saw the 1990 Penfolds Grange named Wine of the Year by prestigious US magazine Wine Spectator in 1995.

John insists on at least four uninterrupted months around each vintage to make his own wines. He loves working with the fruit that comes from the old vines of the region; therefore he started with ‘Plexus’, a Rhone-style blend of Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvedre. In 2006 he released his first Shiraz, ‘Entity’, and also released small quantities of a reserve Shiraz, ‘Eligo’, which further highlights the premium quality fruit from the Barossa.

John Duval Wines will never be another Penfolds – it is simply his chance to express his 30-odd years of premium winemaking knowledge using some of the best fruit in the world.

The ever popular International Wine Fair, which promises to be heaven for wine enthusiasts, is back. The owners, winemakers or export managers from different wineries across the globe including France, Germany, Portugal, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Japan will personally be presenting their fine selections of wines and sakes. This is an excellent opportunity to taste wines and sakes, and to mingle and chat with the owners and winemakers of the participating wineries.

The evening will begin with an informal tasting from 1800hrs to 2000hrs by the Poolside, followed by a sumptuous BBQ dinner at 2000hrs. Your favourite wines picked during the tasting can be ordered and consumed throughout dinner at special Yacht Store (take-away) prices or for home delivery.

最近白沙灣遊艇會為免閒雜人等進入會所範圍，決定提升保安措施。現在白沙灣遊艇會要求會

員在會所內隨身攜帶會員証。香港遊艇會會員如使用白沙灣遊艇會的舢舨服務往來會所的話，

亦請攜帶會員証，而各會員聘用之船員如欲進入會所和使用舢舨服務，請先向我們海事部申請

Pindarie Bar Rossa 2010 – Barossa Valley, South Australia $178Medium-bodied. Aromas of black cherries and blackberries, combined with a rich earthy flavour and elegant refined tannins, give this wine life, length and longevity.

world record ChallengeGuo Chan (crew member of the Volvo 70 Green Dragon) is gearing up to be the first person to complete a solo non-stop circumnavigation in a Class 40. His boat, aptly named Qingdao, arrived by container from Felixstowe in early September and after commissioning here at the Club will sail to her home port of Qingdao. Guo Chuan plans to start his 130-day odyssey from Qingdao in November 2012 heading east via Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope before negotiating the Indian Ocean, Malacca Strait and the South China Sea ,and finally the Yellow Sea and home.

Water MarginCelebrating Hong Kong’s links to the sea, Water Margin is a timely, insightful and stunning look at Hong Kong’s under-appreciated marine ecosystem. This bilingual book covers the history of Hong Kong’s waters as well as sailing, recreation, the eco-system and protection issues. The Club assisted in the making of Water Margin by providing boat time for some of the photo shooting. This book will go to 700 Hong Kong schools and is now available in the Ship Shop for only $450 a copy.
