A Brief History

The Art of Health and Healing program (previously Healing Through

The Arts) of Contra Costa Health Services (CCHS) has been officially

operational for approximately three years at several locations, including

CCRMC and several of the Health Centers. The program was developed

in an organic way, through the vision and determination of the program

committee. The committee is comprised of hospital employees and

volunteers who believe in the arts as a means to improve community

wellness, empower staff, and create a healing environment. We aim

to achieve these goals with each program that we offer.

Goal 1: To improve

community

wellness through

the arts and

creative programs.

Example 1 - Art N’ the Lobby (ANTL): Lead - a weekly

program aimed at discussing health and wellness issues

through a creative medium. It has expanded to serve staff,

patients, and community members at three health centers:

PATIENT PROGRAMS

Example 2: Expressive Arts Therapy (EXA):

1. Goal-To improve the mental well-being and perform crisis intervention for pa-

tients, families, staff & the greater community of CCHS through Art by the Bedside

work, as well as participate in both inpatient and outpatient group visits.

2. Common Interventions - Music, drawing, painting, poetry, storytelling, somatic

inquiry, movement and working with clay. Provide presence, empathic listening and

mirroring of patients.

3. Includes trainings for staff to reduce stress, improve overall well-being of the

providers, and build patient relationships to enhance the quality of services provided

to the community.

History: Operating at CCHS under the Rehabilitation Therapy Dept since Jan

2013, our EXA Program was founded as a partnership between the CA Institute

of Integral Studies (CIIS) and AHH, under Rehab Chair Karen Lloyd and Alan

Siegel. The program continues to develop and expand rapidly under the

management of the Dept. of Rehabilitation.

“I got to talk and listen to

music that I like with the EXA,

and that helped me to feel less

stressed. For a moment, it was

like I forgot I was in the

hospital.”

“After working with the EXA at my bedside

today, I feel a sense of relief, and feel more

trusting that all is going to be okay….it also

helped me appreciate all the inner strength I

have inside me.”

Case Example: Art By The Bedside “KP”

KP...suffered a series of strokes which ren-

dered her quite disoriented and unable to speak

intelligibly. She was unhappy with her

“confinement”, and with such difficulty express-

ing wants and needs, she made constant at-

tempts to escape the hospital....A lot of the staff

seemed at a loss around her… and a bit terrified.

I started my work with KP by finding out

what soothed her and by reflecting and validat-

ing any frustrations about her situation...We also

explored her tastes in music...which turned out

to be both soothing and invigorating for KP, who

apparently was quite social and went dancing “all

the time” before her hospitalization. As I

brought in songs….KP’s mood began to improve

and she began to open up to me about her

life. Her singing, as well as our “talks” began to

contain more real words; frustration around

communications with staff reduced, and with

that her behavior improved...I had the opportuni-

ty to work with KP for a period of many months,

and the privilege of witnessing her bloom again

into the strong, and very sweet social butterfly

that she truly is.

CCRMC Auxiliary provided financial support to provide IPads for the EXAs 2014

“I was feeling quite down and

isolated in the hospital. Working

with the EXA has helped me contact

my hope again. I feel...hopeful about

my situation and grateful that

someone understands me.”

HCWAC is an annual event started in 2006 at

CCHRC, where staff of CCHS can show their

creative side. Staff members have a chance to

display their artwork, perform music, or partake in

EXA activities in the company of their coworkers.

This unique event allows CCHS health workers to

share their talents with their peers, ‘see’ each

other beyond their healthcare roles, support AHH,

and enjoy the beauty of the Redwood Grove.

create an atmosphere

that contributes to

healing & wellness by

eliminating clutter &

extraneous noise, having
