Using photos and pictures to discover what the Mayan Empire looked like. Exploring the structure of Mayan society. Finding out about farming practises and the food the Mayan people had access to by both farming and hunting & gathering. Gain an understanding of how celestial bodies and natural events, such as the equinox, influenced the Mayan way of life. Art & Design Designing and making packaging for ‘Mayan’ chocolate, creating Mayan head-dresses and making a Mayan calendar. Homework: Spellings: For the Summer term Y6’s spelling homework will be to revise the spelling lists Y3-Y6, as pupils will be tested on spelling rules and patterns learnt throughout KS2. During spelling sessions in school children will practise spelling words with relevant rules and patterns. Each Friday, pupils will be tested on words chosen from the word lists and Spelling curriculum. This is to help them become comfortable being tested on unseen words, which follow the rules and patterns they are expected to know. Maths & English Homework: Y6 homework will be set on a Friday, which will be due the following Wednesday. Additional homework may be given during SATs booster groups, which children will note in their homework diaries. Maths and English Revision Guides: All Y6 pupils have been given a red maths revision guide, and a blue English revision guide. These are for their use at home when revising and doing their homework, and cover all the topics relating to Y6 expectations. SATS Revision Classes: These will continue on a Monday after school from 3.15- 4pm

Mathematics: In maths children will continue to consolidate their understanding of the KS2 curriculum, and revising topics in the lead up to KS2 Arithmetic and Reasoning Tests. In addition they will be covering: Geometry-Properties of Shape: • Measuring with a protractor and calculating angles • Finding missing angles using knowledge of vertically

opposite angles, angles in a triangle, angles around a point and on a straight line, and angles in quadrilaterals

• Drawing 2D shapes accurately using given dimensions and angles

• Identifying and making nets of 3D shapes • Identifying parts of a circle and the relationship

between them Statistics:

• Reading, interpreting and drawing line graphs and pie charts, and using them to solve problems

• Finding the mean average After half term pupils will take on a ‘Theme Park Maths’ project, through which they will develop their problem-solving and creative thinking skills, work collaboratively within a team, and use a range of mathematical skills.

This term our class text will be ‘Wonder’ by R. J. Palacio. We will be using this text to inspire a range of writing, and as a focus during whole class reading. Pupils will write for a range of purposes including: Autobiographical writing Balanced argument Formal and informal letters Poetry Persuasive writing Non chronological reports Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling: Children will continue to learn the grammatical terminology required for Y6 and prepare for the KS2 Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Test Reading: Pupils will continue to cover Y6 reading objectives through: • Whole class reading- exploring the author’s style,

vocabulary and characterisation. Children will work on making inferences and using evidence from the text.
