December 2010 Newsletter
The theme for the November AHAS
Saturday was “Under the Sea”. For the Art
Education lesson the students learned about
the anatomy of the octopus and created their
very own personal octopus made from
recycled bottles, tissue paper, and
construction paper. Staff and Volunteers were
very impressed with the students’ abilities to
create new ways to make their art projects
sturdy and scientifically accurate.

Youth Advisory Board
As one of the first tasks of the year the
Youth Advisory Board is doing a coat drive.
They are collecting new and gently used coats
for members of our community. They have
already contacted their local schools for
support, but any extra coats donated would be
greatly appreciated. If you have a coat that
you would like to donate please contact
Youth Advisory Board members have
also been working to support other members
on AHAS Saturdays. Their mentoring has been
helpful to staff and students during these
activities.
Outdoor Education
Continuing with the theme of “Under
the Sea”, students created several fish prints.
This is a fun exercise that uses paint, and the
students learn about the skeletal structure of
fish. Students took their prints with them at
the end of the day.

Students attending the November
workshop ranged in age from 10 to 20. The
session started by introducing themselves to
each other and talking about their favorite
writers. Students wrote short stories or poems
about themselves, their families, funny things
that happened to them, or things that they
hoped might happen to them someday.

Halloween Party
On October 30th we had an AHAS
Halloween Party. Students went on a treasure
hunt, learned about mystery science, created
masks, and designed costumes from
newspaper.

relationships with peers and mentors. The
group watched Red Hot Ballroom, a
documentary about instituting ballroom classes
into schools; played board games; and had a
dance competition.
