  • Clark Adelman, PresidentShofar May 2012

My, how time flies. This month I will complete my first year as president of Agudath Achim. I can honestly say that the majority of the time it has been a labor of love. I have been very lucky to be able to work closely with Rabbi Wohl during these past 9 months. He brings such passion to his job. It has truly been a joy.

I must take this time to thank some of our Board Members. Thanks to Ron Adelman, who has done so much to keep our finances in order and help with the day to day operations of our synagogue. Thanks to Laura Scheinberg who agreed to be secretary for one more year. Regretfully, Laura will be giving up the position for next year. We are looking for a replacement. If you are interested, please contact me. Dave Binus has stepped up as First Vice President and is beginning to learn the job of President. Jeff Greenberg continues to be the synagogue photographer. Mark Lipitz has helped wherever he can. I want to thank all the past presidents who are always ready to give coaching and advice when needed.

Carol Lipitz has done a fabulous job as Sisterhood President. Whenever there has been an event that needs to be done, Carol has come through with flying colors. Sisterhood does so many things for our synagogue. We couldn’t function without them. Thanks Carol. I want to thank Madelyn Greenberg for all her hard work on the Shofar. By the way, we will now be publishing

the Shofar quarterly. If you would like to receive your copy via email, please email Cindy and let her know. You will get it faster and save the synagogue postage. Madelyn, Maxine and Judi Sue also need to be commended for their fabulous work on the Chronicle. Congregants turn to the Chronicle all year long for vital information. Please help with this fundraiser by placing an ad in this year’s Chronicle.

I want to acknowledge two of our past congregants who have remembered Agudath Achim in their wills. Florence Diamond and Betty Lenson of blessed memory. This would be a good time for all congregants to consider remembering Agudath Achim in their wills.

For those of you who attended, you know what a great experience our Megilah reading was. Rabbi Wohl did a wonderful job of including everyone in attendance with reading the Megilah or participating in a Seinfeld like skit, or answering quiz questions for candy. Please plan ahead for next year to participate in this wonderful holiday event.

Saturday morning Shabbat services continue to be such a joy. The service follows Agudath Achim’s traditions, includes a vibrant and insightful sermon by Rabbi Wohl, a delicious lunch with lively discussions and it only takes about two hours. Please try to carve out two hours each week and join us. Services start at 9:30 AM on Saturday and we have a short 40 minute service on Sunday beginning at 8:30 AM.

Our annual dinner meeting will be held on May 20th at 5 PM. Please plan on joining us for a great dinner and our annual election of officers. Thanks to Steve Seltzer who is chairperson of the nominating committee and Andrea Cohen who is chairperson for the dinner.

Please remember that your fair share dues are vital to all the good things that happen at Agudath Achim. Please review your dues amount and if possible increase your commitment. All dues are payable by June 30th.

I look forward to seeing you in the Synagogue soon. Sincerely,

    Clark R. [email protected]

  • It’s a shame that Shavuot is not as widely observed by Jews as Passover or Hanukah for it celebrates the most important event in Jewish history: the giving of the Torah at Mt. Sinai. Our tradition teaches us that on the Sixth of Sivan, only our pious ancestors stayed up all night in excited anticipation of Moses’ return with the Ten Commandments. In commemoration of this momentous event, Jews around the world come together on the eve of Shavuot to study Torah and nosh on Ice Cream and Cake. This annual all-night gathering is known as a Tikkun. The Kabbalists who originated the practice believed that at midnight the heavens open up and favorably receive the thoughts and prayers of those who remain awake on the anniversary of the Revelation. I remember attending my first Tikkun as a student at the Pardes Institute for Jewish Studies in Jerusalem. My fellow yeshiva-buchers and I spent the entire night studying and noshing until 6am when we, along with tens of thousands of other Jews of all races and denominations, walked down to the Western Wall to recite the morning prayers. Some have estimated that close to 250,000 Israelis visit the Western Wall on this very holy day. This year AAC will hold our own

Tikkun on Saturday, May 26th at 8pm. Now, I can guarantee you that we won’t be studying until dawn breaks and that the turnout will be a little smaller than the 250,000 Jews that convene at the Western Wall. However this will be a fun event for congregants who like to a) study Torah or b) eat delicious Ice Cream Sundaes. So, I hope to see everyone at the Tikkun as we celebrate the joyous holiday of Shavuot.
