AGROVOC

• To standardize terminology used to index documents

• Coverage: all areas related to agriculture and good (forestry, fishery, evnrionment etc)

7

Short history of AGROVOC

• Work on AGROVOC started in 1980s (FAO y CEE) • FAO official languages

• Over the years… • …more languages have been added...• …and more terms, based on indexing needs

8

Latest development of AGROVOC

• Over the last few years, much work has been done on its content, structure, and maintenance mechanism• Refinamiento de la estructura• Más idiomas y atención a las variedades entre

los idiomas• Desarrollo de herramienta de manejo: de

centralizado a manejo distribuido

De papel a la red!

AGROVOC now

Distinction between•Terminological level – terms•Conceptual level

•Operational definition of a concept = the set of all terms used in all (available) languages to talk about “something”

ottimo,

Maintenance of AGROVOC before the WB

• Each language version is maintained by different institutions

• Following this process (now discontinued!)• FAO owned a master copy, RDB • FAO sent a copy to the responsible partner• Partner edited the copy and sent it back to FAO• FAO included latest data in the master copy, and

published• Centralized, and slow process

11

Maintenance of AGROVOC with the WB

• Web-based• No longer local copies of DB to be aligned

with master copy• Support to multilinguality• Explicit editorial workflow

• Terms have “status” (draft, …, published)• Editors have “roles” (term editor, …,

publisher)• Terms are “draft” until validation

12

The format behind

• RDF (SKOS)• Formats for export: MySQL, TagText, ISO 2709,

XML, MS Access, …

GUI: the hierarchy of concepts

Information stored for concepts

1. Position in the hierarchy 2. Terms used to name the concept 3. Definition 4.Non-hierarchical relations between concepts5. Additional notes:

1.editorial note, scope note6.Belonging to sub-vocabularios7. History of changes 8. Images

URI

Concepts have URIs•Based on codes, language independent

•Soon URI will be resolvable

ottimo,

22

Concepts and terms

ottimo,

Information about terms

•Can be visualized by clicking on them •Is organized in tabs, just as in the case of concepts

ottimo,

Terms

• May be “preferred” or “not preferred”• For backward compatibility only one preferred

term per concept is allowed

25

Editing terms

ottimo,

26

Visualize relations between concepts

27

Subvocabularies

• They are specific/thematic lists of–Terms–Concepts

ottimo,

Subvocabolaries of concepts
