Major utility companies around the world have diversified their energy production across a wide variety of sources consisting primarily of gas, carbon, and nuclear, but also supplementing renewable sources. Considering all aims (i.e. mitigating climate change, company image) and constraints (production continuity and costs), is it possible to define an ideal mix of electricity production?

10.00 AM – 11.00 PM STANDARDIZING SOCIETAL RESPONSIBILITY What role should the EU play? What progress has there been in the development of international measures?

On October 25, 2011, the European Commission unveiled a new strategy for CSR for the period 2011-2014. The Commission is calling for all large companies to keep track until 2014 of at least one of the following documents during the development of their CSR strategy: the guiding principles of the OECD, the Global Compact, and the ISO 26000

• What is the position of the European Union regarding international criteria for social responsibility?• How can the EU encourage corporations and stakeholders to make CSR commitments and work together to ensure continued progress? Is further legislation required by the EU? When will the sectoral platforms be implemented by the EU?• What role will the EU play in the development of international measures when it comes to CSR? • How will the EU cooperate with member states, partner countries, and relevant internat ional institutions?• What are the EU’s recommendations in the areas of human rights, labour and anti-corruption ? Do European companies comply with the UN Global Compact principles on Human Rights ?

11.30 PM - 12.30 PM GRI & ISO 26 000: Top Corporate Initiatives

For 15 years, the Global Reporting Initiative (1997) and the principles of the Global Compact (1999) encouraged companies to integrate environmental and social issues into their work. More recently, in November 2010, the ISO 26 000 established itself as a reference on social responsibility in organisations.

During this roundtable panelists will discuss in what way CSR principles structure their proceedings and what successes and difficulties they have encountered.

• What provisions exist to manage and evaluate the politics of big companies, SME, and organisations?• What are examples of their success? What are ways to overcome inevitable obstacles?• How can employees be involved in the process?• How are the key stakeholders identified and a constructive dialogue initiated?• What are strategies to communicate commitments to CSR standards? What aspects of CSR and sustainability matter in terms of clients and consumer trust?

1.30 PM - 2.15 PM ADAPTING THE EUROPEAN NETWORK FOR 2020: TOWARD A EUROPEAN SUPERGRID?

The main objective is to improve the Electrical Network (from Northern Europe to Central/Eastern Europe) and to link production areas to consumption centers. The challenge is to build a real integrated electricity market in Europe, and set up efficient security and solidarity within the member states. Interconnected networks will help optimize energy transportation and energy savings.

• How will all the member states be integrated?• What will be the investments for the ten next years?• Will these investments be coordinated between the member states of the E.U. and the national leading utilities?

2.15 PM -3.15 PM THE INTEGRATION OF RENEWABLE ENERGIES IN A SMARTER GRID

Renewable energies will continue to become even more significant in the next few years. The greatest challenge for adopting the 2020 grid is integrating renewable energies and managing their intermittency and storage solutions.

• How can renewable energies be integrated?• How should the EU develop smart grid infrastructure? • How will this be managed and coordinated?• What technologies will be used?• Developing smartgrid solutions is key to managing energy and storage solutions : What technologies will feature prominently?• How much capital is necessary and what public or private institutions will finance the projects?

3.45 PM - 4.30 PM SUSTAINABLE INVESTMENTS: THE KEY CHALLENGES

Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) & Environmental and Social Governance (ESG) Criteria in Europe:

• What are the most important trends in the growing SRI sector?• What framework maintains transparency and works with the European Securities and • Markets Authority (ESMA)?• How can financial results and other factors be compared and evaluated?• Will the market growth continue and who are the key players involved?• Are there the same trends in core-SRI and broad SRI?• How can investment risk be managed and how can portfolios be built?• What has been the reaction of investors?• What do companies and investors need to develop the market?• During this time we will also examine the most successful SRIs.

4.30 PM - 5.30 PM CARBON FINANCE IN EUROPE FOR 2013-2020: MAKE IT PROFITABLE

Carbon finance is now facing a new period: the post-Kyoto period, without global regulatory framework: The next step (2013-2020) will have to deal with new regulations for companies to prevent potential frauds.

• How are carbon constraint initiatives evolving within Europe?• How does the regulatory framework effect carbon strategies (strategies for carbon reduction)? • Do companies differentiate between local or European markets and markets outside of Europe?• How can Europe regulate carbon trading without being put at a disadvantage?• How can the carbon market prevent fraud and gain credibility?• Can we create a healthy market with realistic supply and demand?• What is the future of the carbon market?

1.30 PM - 2.15 PM TRANSPARENCY AND EXTRA-FINANCIAL REPORTING: TOWARD NEW REQUIREMENTS IN EUROPE

• How do Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) reporting and transparency approaches differ across the European Countries? What are the specific repercussions of regulatory mechanisms on companies’ CSR policies in different countries? Is it possible or desireable to harmonize national regulation on CSR reparing?• What would be the most effective European reporting framework for the transparency of environmental and social information of companies? What would be the consequences for companies of the adoption of more detailed reporting requirements • Focus on the new directive for the transparency of extractive industries: what will be the implications of reinforcement of transparency for the extractive industries (mining, oil, and gas companies). In time, will the directive extend to other industries such as telecommunications, banks, or construction? When will the legislation come into effect?

2.15 PM - 3.15 PM REPORTING & MEASURING SUSTAINABILITY: HOW, WHAT FOR AND WHAT IS NEXT?

• What is the best way to report quantifiable metrics and targets as they relate to environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance? Based on what indicators and references?• How can internal and external stakeholders be engaged in understanding how to improve reporting (consumers, NGOs, shareowners)?• What do investors want from CSR reporting?• How can a company differentiate itself beyond regulations and guidelines? What form should a CSR report take? How can a company improve interactivity and take advantage of website potential?• How can ESG performance be integrated into a company’s accounting? What is the status of integrated reporting? When should the deadline be for enforcing integrated reporting in Europe?

3.45 PM - 4.30 PM A EUROPEAN PERSPECTIVE ON SUSTAINABLE INNOVATION From Green Products to Communication

• How can a company drive innovation internally? For research and development of marketing, how can collaborators be mobilised? • How should a portfolio of sustainable offers be structured and marketed? How should the green portfolio be built and with what criteria?• What are the effects of sustainable innovation on businesses and consumers? How can ROI generated by sustainable innovation and improvements in the environmental aspects of projects be evaluated?• In July 2011, the French government launched a national experiment asking 150 companies to display environmental information on their products. How have French consumers reacted to this experiment? Will there be a regulation requiring companies to provide consumers with such information at the European level?

1.30 PM - 2.15 PM EUROPEAN ENERGY EFFICIENCY POLICY Local and European policies, legal constraints, and incentives

The Energy Efficiency Directive was adopted at the end of 2012 to achieve the 20-20-20 targets, the 2008 pledge by Member States to reduce energy consumption by 20% in 2020. This initiative will take effect in early 2014, which leaves Member States one year to implement programs to realize the objective’s goals.

• Because of some flexibility in the measures, how much leeway do the Member States have to adapt the objectives to their national objectives? • What strategies have already been successful in the Member States and which could be a source of inspiration for the other EU Members?

2.15 PM - 3.15 PM ENERGY EFFICIENCY: WHAT STRATEGIES TO REACH EUROPEAN TARGETS?

Beyond the Member States, companies are similarly engaged in their own process for energy efficiency. Questions of savings and performance results come into play, particularly for construction companies. The experience of large companies in the sector will demonstrate the latest strategies to help achieve the objectives of the directive.

• What local assets are encouraging private initiatives?

4.30 PM - 5.30 PM SMART CITIES IN EUROPE: THE MOBILITY CHALLENGE

Mobility issues & EV in European cities:

• What are the prospects for a reliable EV charging network across Europe?• What are the EV pilot projects in Europe?• How do cities work with electric vehicle fleets, public transportation, and individual vehicles?• How will local and European policies be connected?
