What Is Agriculture...!!!

Agriculture may be defined as:-The art and science of growing plants and other crops and the raising of animals for food, other human needs, or economic gain.

It describes agriculture as both an art and a science (needs skill and founded on scientifically verified facts) and thus includes specialized disciplines; the words “growing” and “raising” are descriptive of enterprise, activity or practice.

Continue… 1. Agriculture is an enterprise or business, activity or practice. It is synonymous to farming. 2. The practice of agriculture is based on systematized body of knowledge (science) and requires skill (art).

3. Agriculture often involves the cultivation of the soil to grow plants and the raising of animals for human needs. The words “crops” and “livestock” are also used. However, both words are special or technical terms.

Agriculture in Pakistan:-Pakistan is situated in southern Asia, between the latitudes 23° 35’ to 37° 05’ North and longitudes 60° 50’ to 77° 50’ East (GOVPK, 2008). It is among the most important agricultural countries of the world.  Agriculture is the single largest economic sector in the economy of Pakistan, and dominant driving force for growth and poverty reduction. It contributes about 25% to the national economy. Over 44% of the labor force is employed in the production, processing and distribution of agricultural products.

Importance of Agriculture:-

OAbout 50 YEARS EARLIER, agricultural sector was not considered as a commercial sector for economic development in a large number of developing and developed nations. During the LAST 50 YEARS this sector is realized as a major productive sector of Pakistani economy. 61% Population is living in more than 50,000 villages in Pakistan.

Importance of Agriculture:-OBackward agricultural sector contributes 20.9 % to GDP.

OIts growth rate is as low as 1.2 %.

OIt employs the 45.0 % of total labor force.

OIts contribution to exports (Food Group) is 8.62 %.

Importance of Agriculture:-

OAgriculture is a Vital Sector of Pakistan Economy.

OIt Includes 21% of total GDP in Pakistan.

OIt Includes 41% of Total labor force in Pakistan.

ODates Back to 4500 BC in Indus Civilization.

O Large Contribution to Foreign Exchange Earnings.

Objectives Of Agriculture:-1. To maintain National Agricultural Library at NARC containing latest reading material.2. To acquire, process, store and disseminate literature published in Pakistan on agricultural research and development by maintaining “Pakistan Agriculture Database”.3. To publish PARC research journal “Pakistan Journal of Agricultural Research” on quarterly basis.4. To work as FAO AGRIS National Liaison Office in Pakistan and regularly send input of Pakistani published agricultural research literature for their databases after processing.

Objectives Of Agriculture:-4. To develop Liaison with international, regional, national and provincial agricultural information centers/organizations.5. To promote library resource sharing through maintaining “Union Database of Journals in Agricultural Libraries of Pakistan”.6. To help NARS scientists, faculty members and students in review of literature and acquisition of articles/documents reprints7. To provide facilities for scientific and functional photographic coverage of labs, fields and important events.

Role of Agriculture In Economic Development of Pakistan:-

-: Increasing GDP of the Economy :-

Agricultural sector of Pakistan has made significant contribution to its GDP. When the GDP of a country grows, economic development takes place. In the beginning agricultural sector had highest share in the GDP but then the service sector became the chief provider with the passage of time.

-: Foreign Exchange Earner :-

The agricultural area is the major source of foreign exchange incomes in Pakistan. The export of rice, cotton, cotton based products etc. bring about 65% of our total earnings. The imports help in vital inputs for development i.e. import of equipment, capital machinery, technical know-how etc.

When on systematic lines the agriculture sector is extended, it produces attractive marketable surplus. The surplus i.e. sugar, fish, cotton, silk, timber, jute, wheat etc. can help to pay the capital tools, import of raw materials and technology. This helps in bringing about fast economic development.

Continue :-Increasing the Tax Revenue of the

Government:-Economic development is one of the major duties of any government. The greater the government gathers tax revenue, more the money it will have for spending on development related projects. As, agriculture engages 20% contribution towards the GDP and 43.61% of Pakistan labor force, this increases per capita income. And government collection of tax revenue increases as per capita income increases.

Agricultural Credit:-In order to cope with the increasing demand for agricultural credit, institutional credit to farmers is being provided through Zaria Taraqiati Bank Limited, Punjab Provincial Cooperative Bank Limited, five big Commercial Banks, and Domestic Private Banks. Adequate availability and access to institutional credit is essential for accelerating the pace of agricultural development and ensuring Food Security in the country. The Agricultural Credit Advisory Committee (ACAC) has allocated Rs. 260 billion for the year 2009‐10 as compared to Rs. 250 billion fixed for last year which indicates an increase of 11.6 percent over the disbursement of Rs. 233 billion during the year 2008‐09. See Table 2.17.

Conclusion:-

Agriculture had contributed in Pakistan’s development in these various ways. The government should announce policies which raise the productivity of agriculture in order to increase economic development.

Continued…It is important to ensure water security for the people through a national water policy laying down the outlines of an integrated water management strategy that aims at maximizing the sustainable economic, social and environmental returns on the water resource development, allocation among its competing demands, its use by consumers and safe disposal of post‐use effluents.
