LED indicators and the patented failure check.

Legal requirement in all ECE states

In the case of vehicles approved for use on public roads, the indicators must be monito-red: The failure of an indicator must be shown optically or acoustically in the vehicle. Thisapplies in all ECE states. In other words, the potential failure of the indicator must bemonitored by the vehicle. Manufacturers use various failure check systems for this. Thefailure checks currently in use cannot detect simple LED lights and indicate a fault. AllHella LED indicators have integrated electronics for the failure check. The indicators areself-monitoring. They generate an impulse that is evaluated by the electronic ballast. Thisballast simulates a 21 W bulb, which makes operation with conventional flasher unitspossible.

As soon as one single LED fails, the light can be considered faulty, the impulse is notgenerated. The ballast then switches the bulb simulation off and the flasher unit indicatesthe fault to the driver.

LED light failure check and correct electrical connection

Operation of the light with AC voltage or synchronised direct current is not permitted!

The individual light functions may only be operated with a vehicle fuse of max. 3 A.

LED light failure check

On account of the low Watt power of LED lights, which distinguishes

them significantly from filament bulb versions, there can be problems

with the bulb failure check during operation on various traction vehicles.

Since indicator failure checks are required by legislation, we recom-

mend only operating the light in combination with an indicator control

unit, Hella part no. 5DS 009 552-… .

In addition, further lighting functions are detected by some traction

vehicles. This is a vehicle comfort function which is not required by

legislation and does not release drivers from their obligation to see for

themselves that the lighting equipment is working. Here, too, faulty dia-

gnoses can be a result of the low power levels involved (instrument

panel in the driver cab indicates a light failure although the function is

working).

If faulty diagnoses such as the one described above occur during ope-

ration of your traction vehicle type, please contact the traction vehicle

manufacturer.

Lighting engineering has undergone dramatic changes in the past few years as LEDs have increased in capacity. LEDs arenow also used for headlights and worklights, as well as for other kinds of lights. Hella was one of the first manufacturers tolaunch the advantages of LED onto the market through mature technical solutions. Thanks to intensive research and deve-lopment, Hella is already in a position to replace Xenon by LED worklights1). The long service life of the LEDs means thatHella LED worklights are absolutely maintenance-free after installation. 2)

1) The lumen values listed for Hella LED worklights correspond to the light that effectively leaves the headlight. Thus thesespecifications correspond to the measurement values.

2) Service life specifications for Hella LED worklights do not refer solely to the service life of the LED, but rather to thesystem function.

Thermal Management The long service life of the LED can only be achieved through good thermal management. Hella uses state-of-the-art simu-lation programs even at the development stage to help optimise the design in terms of heat dissipation. In addition, allheadlights are fitted with a thermal sensor that reduces power supply in the event of overheating. This is the only way allthe advantages of LED can be exploited throughout the service life.

LED worklights already provide light output at Xenon level.The colour temperature of around 6000 Kelvin is very similar to daylight. This makes perception much easier for the human eye and prevents people becoming tired quickly. This makes more efficient working in the dark possible.

The whole length of the boom is illuminated thanks to the homogeneous long-range illumination. The high-contrast light allows thespraying process to be seen better, and any faulty functions to be recognised immediately. Thus facilitating the correct distribution ofthe spraying medium.

The use of xenon worklights brings clear advantages compared with the use of halogen worklights:

■ 2.5 times the luminous flux, and thus brighter and wider illumination of the working area (compared with H3 bulb).

■ Approx. 35% less power consumption.

■ Illumination similar to daylight – for natural colour reproduction even at night.

■ No sudden light failure – impact-resistant light arc rather than a sensitive bulb filament.

■ Service life up to five times longer than that of a halogen bulb – reduced expenditure for bulb replacement.

■ Constant brightness even if there is a drop in on-board voltage.

■ Lower load on the vehicle wiring system thanks to the power consumption of only 42 W.

Benefits

■ Enhanced power efficiency:The increasing number of electronic control components puts a large

strain on the vehicles’ power system. Since it is very costly to supply the

required power, there is a noticeable trend towards very low control currents

which still need to be reliably switched.

Our solution: a system of snap-action friction switches and chosen pairs of

mating contacts. The standard AgNi version reliably makes or breaks

contacts under as low as mA loads.

Particularly efficient Power LEDs are another means of reducing power

requirements by up to 70% per switch compared to previous switch ranges.

■ Maintenance-free:Operators expect the switch to work reliably and without maintenancethroughout the vehicle’s entire life cycle. Key influencing parametersare the expected life (cycles) of the contacts and the expected life ofthe light source.We provide our customers with our particularly wear-resistant “Microswitch System”. Its snap-action friction switch minimises wearand contamination of contact faces with every flick of the switch. Theaverage expected life of each LED is 100,000 h.
