Kings County
The income for Kings County farm crops for 1943was the hi[hest in the history of the industry, butnet returns were probably not in excess of other yearson account of the high production costs. Some cropswere, no doubt, produced without profit or even insome cases at a loss and may show a marked declineduring the following year.
Wherever it is possible, accurate returns havebeen compiled for crops produced entirely within thecounty, but in the case of some crops, which are moreor less migratory, estimates have necessarily beenused as in the case of honey, sheep, wool and beefcattle.
l
These figures are not intended to be the growersnet profit, but rather the gross or f.o.b. ~,eturnswhich would include picking, hauling and packingcharges.
No attempt has been made to estimate the value ofproduce raised and consumed on the fazm Or to computethe value of victory garden production, but if thesefigures were available, they would amount to a largesum.
The returns for crops and increased tonnagesproduced, indicates the response of Kings County growersin the proguction of necessary food crops in cooperationwith the War Food Administration for the war effort, although the growers were handicapped by the shortageof farm labor and essential farm machinery.

In eomplience ,itb Section 65.5 of the I~ricu’ita~’al Code I herebysubmit my annuel report covering the A~ricul±ure; prod~ac’!;s forKin~s County in 19¢7.
Vineyard ~n~ orchard acreage has been grea%ly reduced during thelast fe~’" years, but with renexved emphasis chni:qfi the past winter. Inmost cases it has been old unproductive ,~cr~a~e, but recently youngth~-ifty orchards have been pulled bec~-.use of io’;~" prices of certainvarifies.
Cotton acreage showed a very heavy increase. The plantingseason was favorable so most growers secured a good stand and thefall season was ideal for harvesting, resulting in a record cropof I~48 bales per acre.
The entire Tulare Lake Basin ~las brought under cultivationthe first time since flooding. The area was largely planted tobarley. Acreage v~as somewhat less than [[946 but conditionswere favorable for heavy yield of 1.321 tons per acre.
Every effort has been made to secure accurate data on which %obase these figures but in some cases estimates have been necessary. These are F.0.£., prices~ and in order to arrive at true farm value,he rvesting, packing and other farm costs should be deducted,
We cannot attempt to give credit to all v:ho have cooperated inthe compilation of this 9oport but it was made possible by thecooperation of growers, warehousemen, shippers and governmentalagencies.

In compliance with Section 6~.5 of the Agricultural Code I herebysubn~it my annual report covering the Agricultural products forKings County in 1948.
Cotton is again by far the most valuable crop. The acreageincreased over thirty-three percent. The wet cool April was very favor-able for grain, but v~s decidely unfavorable to cotton. Replantingwas necessary in many fields and the final stand ~as poor on a consider--able acreage~ Wile prices of both lint and seed were lower the totalincome from the cotton crop ~as larger than in 1947.
The acreage of vineyards and most varities of fruit showed adecrease v~,ith the exception of cling peaches which showed an increase.
A number of farm organizations have requested the AgriculturalCon~issioners to report the net return to growers instead of thegross. The commissioners felt that sufficient data is not availableto determine the cost of producin~ tile various crops which would benecessary in order to compute the net return. So, we are againreporting the gross return for the various crops, which may be highin some cases but does not necessarily mean a high profit to thegro~,er s.
Heretofore we have used an estimate of the poultry productionof the County. This year we were able to replace the estimate byactual figures on egg and meat bird production.
Our cover page of this report is a photograph of a young farmerwith his three prize heifers. Kings County is proud of its youngpeople, who through their club activities are doing much towards theimprovement of the livestock in the County.
We cannot attempt to give credit to all who have cooperated inthe compilation of this report, but it v~s made possible by thecooperation of growers, warehouses, shippers, various individualsand governmental agencies.

I~ cor’.[~liance with Section 6%.5 of the Agricultural Code, I hereby submit theAnnu:~.l Crop Report, compiled by the Co.~,,issioner and staff of the Agriculturalt:’,~,:Assioner’s office of Kings County.
Th,~ c~w~r page of this report is a photograph of the Kings County exhibit at theIP.~;D State Fair, also prepared and inst~illed by this office.
~-As report shows a marked increase over the 19h9 crop returns which is largely duet’~ incre~sed prices, rather than increased production. ~is does not mean greaterprofmts to the growers, as in many cases the increased cost of production offsetthe higher F riccs. These figures are based on F.O.B. prices, as we have no meansof computing the net returns to Erowers.
Cotton was again the most valuable crop in the County. i~creage decreased, buthi~’hcr prices mor~, than offset the smaller acreage. The cotton crop has been awmy valuable crop for the County (luring the transition period fro’l fruits andvineyards to field crops. The high income from cotton has enabled the gravers topull the vines and trees, level the land, and produce a crop during the same year, without loss of revenue.
Production records of fruits aud grapes is dependent on accurate figures, whichare very difficult to keep up to ~ate, aue to the continuous removal of these crops.Veo~ often production records arc available to us on a portion of the acreage,wlLich enables us to cow-putt the total production if acreace figures are available.
~vo new crops made their appearance in commercial production during the year inKings County. Saffl~,ler, long heralded as the future oil crop, l~roved disappoint-ing to nearly all producers of this cr ~. Indiun Corn was much more sati’sfactory,as many growers obtaincd Tavorable retu~’ns.
We cannot attempt to give credit to all who have cooperated in the compilation ofthis report, but it was made possible by the cooperation of growers, warehouscmen, shippers~ various individuals and Governmental agencies.

Honorable A. A~ Brock, Director of Agriculture, and
Honorable Board of Supervisors of Kings County
Gentlemen:
In compliance ~th Section 65.5 of the Agricultural Code~ I hereby Submitthe Annual Crop Report, compiled by the Commissioner and Staff of the AgriculturalCommissioner’s Office of Kings County.
The cover page of this report is a photograph of a purebred dairy ofKings County, one of the oldest in the County, which has been operating as a
purebred dairy since 1910.
The total value of crops exceeds that of 1950 by several million dollars~largely as a result of increased acreage of cotton~ A new crop, CertifiedAlfalfa Seed, made its appearance for the first time this year and willprobably show a large increase within the next few years.
Most crops brought a better price per unit than they did in 19~O, with theexception of Grapes of all varieties. The Grape crop was good~ producing moretonnage per acre than for a number of years, but the low price and the high
rcost of laoo more than offset the increased tonnage°
We would like to express our appreciation for the help we received fromgrowers, warehousemen, shippers, individuals and Governmental Agencies~ whichmade the compilation of this report possible@
Respeckfully submitted

Honorable A. A. Brock, Director of Agriculture, and
Honorable Board of Supervisors of Kings County
Gentlemen:
In compliance with Section 65.5 of the Agricultural Code, I herebysubmit the annual crop report, compiled by the Commissioner and staffof the Department of Agriculture.
As has been our custom in the past, we have selected a typicalagricultural scene for our cover page, a combined harvester cutting barleyin the Tulare Lake area. Barley is the second most important crop of theCounty from the standpoint of acreage and returns to the growers.
The 1952 income shows a definite decline from the peak year of 1951.This was brought about by the loss of several thousand acres of barley andthe reduction of cotton acreage in the Tulare Lake area by flooding. Therewas also a marked decline in prices of several crops, particularly cottonand beef cattle.
A new crop, potatoes, was planted in the Murray district, increasingthe acreage of vegetables in that area, where watermelons, asparagus andsweet potatoes are being grown.
We again express our appreciation for the help we received from growers, warehousemen, shippers, individuals and governmental agencies, which madethe compilation of this report possible.
Respe~tfully submitted

Gentlemen:
In compliance with Section 65.5 of the Agricultural Code, I here-by submit the Annual Crop Report for 1953, compiled by theCommissioner and staff of the Agricultural Commissioner’s officeof Kings County°
The 1953 farm prices continued to decline for the second con-secutive year since the peak of 1951.
Cotton continued to be the principal crop in the county from thestandpoint of acreage and gross income, accounting for more themhalf the farm income of the c~nty.
We want to emphasize that these values are the gross returns re-ceived by the growers for their crops, and include all costs ofproduction, harvesting and preparation for market, and as in thecase of some crops, may actually represent a loss to the grower.
We desire to express our appreciation to all who assisted in thepreparation of this report.
