Promote the advancement of women leaders in defence and security professions

across Canada;

Provides its members (approx. 1900) with a forum and activities for professional

development, the exchange of ideas and experiences, and expanding networks; and

Supports women pursuing careers in defence and security through annual WiDS-

FeDS Memorial Scholarship Award Ceremony and events, both formal and

informal, offering networking and mentoring opportunities for members.

2017 Recap

• Date: 8 March 2017

• Location: Shaw Centre

• Attended: 325 (the largest breakfast attendance to date)

• Highlights:

• Event was centred around the 100th Anniversary of Vimy

• Memorial scholarship was awarded to Sarah Dobson and was given in honour of

WWI veteran Katherine Mcdonald

• Keynote address The Honourable Kent Hehr (Minister of Veterans Affairs at the

time)

2017 Recap

• Date: 10 April 2017

• Location: Ottawa City Hall

• Attended: 68 Mentees, 37 Mentors

• Highlights:

• Similar to “speed dating”, 1-2 mentees had 10-15 minutes with 5 different Mentors.

• Keynote remarks, Kelly Williams, Cdr (Retd), GD-MS

• Event was paired with the Esprit du Corps “Breaking Down the Barriers” reception.

• Feedback from both the mentors and mentees was exceptional with significant calls for more events of this type.

• Date: 15 November 2017

• Location: Telfer School of Management

• Attended: 87 for the PD event, 13 additional for reception

• Highlights:

• Two Telfer lecturers, who specialize in this topic, provided an interactive and informative presentation on this subject. Duration approximately 1 hour 45 minutes.

• WiDS sponsored reception after PD event. Duration 2 hours.

• Keynote speaker at reception, BGen Francis Allen

• Feedback again from attendees was overwhelmingly positive.

The What

• Explore alternative funding/sponsorship opportunities outside of the traditional industry sponsorship

• Establish a mechanism to secure future scholarship funds

The How

• Investigate alternative funding sources, such as government or other grants

• Identify new fundraising initiative(s) to replace Golf Tournament

• Rewrite WiDS Sponsorship package with focus on expanding corporate sponsorship opportunities beyond event specific sponsorship

• Secure Patron level sponsor - $25,000 (year) by FY2019

Strategic Priority 3 – Professional

Development

The What

• Expand Professional Development program to include one large event

• Explore opportunities to affiliate and partner with other organizations for Professional Development activities

• Increase awareness of WiDS Professional Development series

• Look at opportunities to introduce young women to Defence and Security (i.e. participation at Hadfield Youth Date, Go Eng Girl, Ashbury College, Girls Fly Too, etc)

• Include mentorship component in a minimum of one WiDS event each year

The How

• Organize conference/break-out style Professional Development Event (i.e. WiD Conference Model)

• Increase Professional Development event attendance – target attendance for large event150 attendees

• Identify a government and/or academic organization(s) to partner with for at least one Professional Development event each year

• Attract high-caliber speakers and participants (government and industry) to drive Professional Development event attendance

• Participation in at least one event focused on young women pursing opportunities in Defence and Security / technical trades

Strategic Priority 4 – Event Planning

The What

• Develop annual WiDS event plan that maps to AOP

• Continue to execute WiDS Memorial Scholarship Breakfast as WiDS marquee event

• Work with local high-schools to attract/promote participation in Memorial Scholarship Event

• Increase awareness and attendance at 5 𝑎 7 program to drive WiDS Membership and sponsors

The How

• Continue with defence-security rotation for Memorial Scholarship honoree with intent to expand event beyond traditional federal government organizations (i.e. DND and RCMP)

• Attend at least one community event (i.e. Go ENG Girls or Hadfield Youth Summit) to bring awareness to opportunities for young women in defence and security

• Invite high-profile “guests” to a minimum of 4 – 5 𝒂 7 with intent to increase attendance

• Consider opportunities for partnerships for 5 𝒂 7 (i.e. British High Commission)
