A WORD FROM THE DESK OF OUR PRESIDENT ‘RACQUET RALPH’

Welcome to our Annual Court Talk. What an amazing year we’ve had. So much achieved and such a wonderful plan for the future. We did our homework, tackled the complex issues, and produced 1st class courts to play on. I want to spend a moment reflecting on everyone who contributed. Thanks to Paul Lidgerwood who organised our first sponsors meeting. You will be relieved to know that the Committee members and Wes, paid for our own meals. We got to know Rae Tomlinson, James Tomlinson, Daniel Wheeler and Jason Brinkworth from Marshall White (If you need a reference, just ask Julie Kealey). We also met Abhishek Shokeen (Shak) and Jan O’Connor from The Bank of Melbourne (the club’s new Bank). I spoke with Jim Manos and Jenna Goodall from Audi Penfold Burwood. We all pestered Jason Lee from Malvern East Physiotherapy about what is ailing us. It would seem that most of our sponsors want lessons from Wes. A great night was had all round, and we are very pleased to be working with such a great group of local people. We all breathed a collective sigh of relief on the 18th of September, when the new Constitution came into effect. Glenn Mescher delivered a brilliant result here, at a surprisingly low cost to the Club. Glenn was ably assisted by Julie, Deb and Chris. We are now “EMTC Inc.” This means we are all covered by insurance and ready to negotiate with Council and others. The Courts in particular, and maintenance in general, are in great shape. We have Rohan Appleton and Robin Borchard to thank here. We also wish to acknowledge Clive for his many years of service, and wish him well now he is having a long overdue retirement. Ian Fuelscher has become an institution at our Club, at a very early age. His handling of the Juniors is the talk of the Club. We are blessed to have him. Chris Woods and Rohan Appleton continue to drive Senior competition. Thanks to Peter Car and Alan Young for their continued work here as well. We are overflowing with competition teams. I wanted to highlight Julie Kealey’s work on the Business Aspects of our Club. A lot of this work happens in the background and is unseen by many people. The analysis of our membership has been invaluable for sponsorship and dealing with a range of our Tennis Stakeholders. Julie is driving the modernisation of our clubs business strategy, and we will see this come to fruition in the near future. The next member of the Committee that needs acknowledgement is our Treasurer Onofrio. He has brought us into a modern accounting program in Xero. Onofrio and Deb are across the new system and it is a credit to them. Onofrio has looked after us in an extremely challenging year for himself and his family. It is a testament to his dedication and professionalism. I want to thank Karen Clydesdale, Cassie Lloyd, Leigh Hunt and Natalie Harwood. They have been invaluable members of the Committee. We are looking forward to their continued participation in our club. I have saved the most important person till last. Deb Bolic has not only managed to sort out the entire running of the club, but kept us all under control. Despite having an overly full workload, she has managed to get her head around the new Constitution. In fact, if anyone is looking for an answer, Deb is the one we ask. Deb epitomises what we stand for: a tennis parent who goes above and beyond to help the Club. She is always helpful and positive, no matter what comes her way. We would ideally like to Clone her. The next phase will be new lights. Many of us thought old age was to blame for not seeing the ball at night. It turns out that we have woefully inadequate lighting on Courts 1 to 6 and only slightly better on 7 to 10. They will all need to be replaced. Stonnington have made positive noises about giving us some money (It would be a first for them at our Club). Either way, we will put a plan into effect by the end of January. The good news for those members who enjoy the pool is, we have fixed the lining, and in the process found a sponsor for Solar Heating. We are receiving a significant discount and will be able to make far greater use of this asset. Keep your eye on the ball! Ralph Muir Morris

SPONSORSHIP Paul Lidgerwood has done a fantastic job getting three Major sponsors ($10,000 each) and one Local sponsor on board for the coming 12 months, and hopefully beyond that. We welcome Bank of Melbourne – where we will be doing all our Club banking from December onwards. Marshall White Armadale Office – Rae, James, Dan, Jason and their team are happy to help any members with real estate enquiries. Audi Penfold Burwood – Andrew and his team would love to introduce members to their Audi car range. Jason from Malvern East Physiotherapy looks forward to helping any members with any tennis (or other) ailments they have. You will see some signage around the Club and the sponsors will be getting involved in some of our special event days also.

Winter weekend tennis 2015 (May –Sept15) VIC PENNANT: We had six mens and three womens pennant teams. The mens Grade 3 and womens Grade 5 lost their sectional finals. The Saturday mens Grade 5 and mens Grade 8 teams won their sectional finals and lost in the next round. There were 3 womens Grade 3 sections. The top two teams of the Section our womens Grade 3 played in ended up playing off in the final for Grade 3. The second side beat the top side after being 4/0 down after the 4 singles rubbers! BRTA: We had two Bayside teams. They both made the finals but unfortunately lost their first final. Our current Summer 2015-16 season is under way and this year we have four WDTA teams and six BRTA teams competing.

STRATEGIC PLAN 2015-17

Julie Kealey gave a great presentation of our new Strategic Plan to the members at a feedback session back in August. The plan is available to all members via our website and we will continue to review and update it as our circumstance change. This will be your ‘go to’ document to see where your Club is heading and what we aim to achieve. As always, feedback is welcome at any time. As part of our Strat Plan we applied for a funding grant of $100,000 for a Lighting Upgrade via the “Holden Home Ground Advantage” scheme. With the help of Ian, Jordan Kealey did a fantastic job of producing the required video for the grant. A number of members also helped out by staring in it. The grant was submitted late August and we were advised late October that unfortunately our application wasn’t successful this time. We will continue to apply for any grants we think can help improve our Club.

JUNIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS

With just under 80 entries, the 2015 Junior Club Championships were once again a tightly contested affair across all age groups. SENIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS

Our Senior Club Championships were held during September 2015 and this year we had seven divisions of competition with over thirty members participating. In the Open Women’s division Therese Oyston’s reign of five consecutive wins came to an unfortunate end as she had sustained a knee injury earlier in the year and was unable to defend her title for the sixth time. We had a field of six ladies keen to take out the Championships. The final between new member Lesley Digby and seasoned weekend competitor Mirjana Stegnjaic was a great match with Mirjana victor in the end. Open Qtr finalists – Rebecca, Lesley, Maria & Vanessa The Open Men’s division had a field of eleven contenders, including last years champion Simon Willox. After some close matches the quarter finals were between old hand Rohan Appleton, new coach and member Tom Paterson, up and coming junior Simon Thomas and defending champion Simon Willox. The final was played by Simon W and Tom, both FTA Coaches keen to get their hands on the trophy, and the winner after three close sets was Simon. In the other divisions played the results were: B Grade Women: Winner - Vanessa Bull Runner-Up – Carolyn Bell-Harper A Grade Men: Winner – Daniel Lustri Runner-Up – Harry Lister B Grade Men: Winner – Hubert Wajszel Runner-Up – Brendan McLean C Grade Men: Winner – Robin Borchard Runner-Up – Dominic Ngyen Veteran Men: Winner – Peter Goldberg Runner-Up – Alan Young Congratulations to our Champions, and well done to all participants. MAINTENANCE UPDATE

1. Court Upgrade: This has been the major project this year for courts 1-6. This involved digging up the crusty material which converted into mud when it rained. The project has resulted in a big improvement in the playability of the court surfaces and this will continue to improve as it settles down. Ongoing maintenance is still required, particularly around the baselines where damage frequently occurs from dragging of feet, playing when it is too dry or wet, etc. Courts 7-10 had minor repairs and we will be reviewing them for the 2016 year as well. There are a large number of hours to maintain our courts in the best possible condition and this is managed by our caretaker Robin who is becoming an expert in court maintenance. 2. Pool: The pool has a large crack due to age and also movement in the soils over the years. Due to the crack, the pool has a liner, as this was the recommended option by the experts going back 12 years. The existing liner has lived beyond its expected lifespan and needs replacing. Unfortunately liners are not cheap and we have to spend just over $10,000 to replace it, and therefore get at least another 7-10 years. The good news is the pool should be up and running in the next week (if not already fixed by time of going to print!). 3. Lighting: This is another major project the committee is working on at the moment. We have had experts carry out tests on the lighting for all courts and found, not surprisingly, that courts 1-6 are significantly below required standards which makes it hard to see the ball. Courts 7-10 are better but could also be improved. Courts 1-6 have very old lights and older technology which is the reason for the poor lumens results. Upgrading the lighting will cost over $100k and up to $180k depending on the scope of the project. We are negotiating with Council and other parties to see if we can get funding to assist the club. So far we haven’t had much traction but are continuing to work on this with Stonnington and other areas. If any club members have experience in lighting, can you please let me know as we will need to put a sub-committee together to progress this project further technically and also for the funding options. Finally, I would like to thank Robin & Helen for their continued great work as our onsite caretakers. They do a wonderful job looking after the Club for us. We have just negotiated a new contract with Robin and he is now looking after general maintenance, the pool, gardening, court maintenance and cleaning of the Clubhouse. He is now a very busy man but he still somehow manages to find time to play competition 2-3 times a week and ride his bike long distances on the weekend. Rohan Appleton EMTC Committee

NIGHT COMPETITION RESULTS

February 2016 Autumn season planning now: Night tennis is blossoming with 20 teams in Spring 2015 and 21 in Autumn 2014 . The new is season being organized right now. About 80 players participate regularly. It is a strong part of the club and a great contribution through night fees to the club’s revenue which is much needed to fund new lights, which the committee is really working on. While women dominate midweek and the juniors in the mornings and after school, it is when it gets dark the 9-5 workers come out to play. We have about 60 men and 20 female members playing at night. The results and highlights are below. Outside venues needed We have been so successful that we have had to hire extra courts at Bayview (Syndal) and Glen Iris Valley. Thanks to those guys and ladies who have played home games away. Of course during the court repairs we had to do this even more but we got through that well. Pathway to competition Thursday night internal competition is an ideal way to test yourself out for intra club home and away matches. Held each Thursday from 7.00pm for the first 7 weeks of each school term. It’s open to men and women and there are two divisions based on talent. It is organized professionally by Futures tennis in association with the club. New teams and old stayers In the top division the coaches Simon Willox, Tom Paterson and Callum Ashley were a welcome new addition and showed us what to aspire to. Just a few sections lower in mixed, and proving we are a family friendly club, we added a mixed doubles team comprised of father, mother, son (Mark, Cherry and Alex) and new players to comp Niki Appleton and Leanne Lawrence. A new singles team joined the growing Thursday night singles comp. (Brett Jefferson and Sam Derwent). Deb Bolic and Leigh Hunt used their contacts to get together a cast of thousands for their new open grade team last Autumn. However some of our favourite teams are the ones who just keep turning up season after season and recruiting their new blood occasionally. You know who you are. The Newks and the Golden Kiwis are our longest continuing teams and continued into their 40th seasons. Although there have been some personnel changes over the journey Gary Lyons and Stuart Cox are the originals and although he wasn’t born when the team started youngster Josh Weberruss is keeping the team going, despite not knowing who John Newcombe is . Peter Goldberg is the gold of the Golden Kiwis from 20 years ago and although the Kiwis are gone Peter Car and Andrew McVean are the late replacements maybe only 15 years ago. The 30 year social grudge match continues under lights with the Thursday Tennis Tyros, and the St Cecelia’s crowd is starting to challenge their tradition also on a Thursday. A Kooyong versus St Cecelia’s match took place in the off season and tennis was the winner, along with the bar takings. Get graded and have a go Through our partnership with Futures we can have any prospective player graded by a coach and the coaches then liaise with the night co-ordinator to find a team. It has been a great year for night tennis and there is a lot more to look forward to.

SOCIAL TENNIS – FRIDAY AND SUNDAY

Our Sunday Social tennis continues to thrive with many members taking the opportunity to have a hit. Sometimes there are so many we don’t have enough courts. It is great to see the varied ages and levels of experience joining together for a fun social hit, with a reasonable level of competition. Friday morning social has seen the numbers dwindle slightly over the years. With most people leading very busy lives it can sometimes be hard to find time for yourself. We hope all our members are able to get down to the courts at some stage during the year to have a hit and continue, or re-invigorate, their love for the game of tennis.
