WORKSHOP
AGIS VI workshop will be "Acid Gas Injection – From Well Design to Reservoir Evaluation" and is presented
by Liaqat Ali and Russell Bentley from WSP|Parsons Brinckerhoff. This workshop will cover the well design and
the reservoir evaluation for acid gas injection.
WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff has a combined 130-year history, with roots in companies founded in the United
States, the United Kingdom and Canada. Over the years, dozens of companies based in these countries and interna-
tionally were merged to create the firm known today as WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff.
WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff is a globally-recognized engineering professional services firm employing 34,000
people.
In October 2015 they marked the one-year anniversary of the completion of the acquisition of Parsons Brinck-
erhoff by WSP. Other highlights in 2015 were the acquisition of MMM Group, one of the largest privately-owned
engineering consulting firms in Canada and the acquisitions of Levelton and SPL Consultants in Canada and Faveo
Group in Scandinavia. In 2015 the Corporation also launched its 2015-2018 strategic plan, which aims to support its
vision to "Always be the first choice for clients, partners and employees".

Silver Sponsor: Geolex Inc. (AGIS VI Proceeding Printing)
www.geolex.com
Geolex, Incorporated® (Geolex) is an international environmental consulting firm providing litigation support,
environmental liability assessment, merger and acquisition due diligence and strategic environmental services. Over the past
thirty-five years we have developed significant expertise in evaluating and quantifying environmental liabilities associated
with industrial operations and the investigation and remediation of groundwater contamination, especially due to NAPL
migration, chlorinated solvents, petroleum products, and heavy metals. Over the last decade Geolex has developed
specialized expertise in geologic sequestration of acid gas and CO2 (also known as Carbon Capture and Storage) as an
environmentally-responsible and cost-effective alternative to the traditional methods of handling wastes and by-products of
natural gas processing.
The world’s thirst for energy continues to increase especially now the world population went up to 7
billion. Producers of petroleum and natural gas must begin to look for poorer quality reservoirs, those
containing high carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide or poor complex geology reservoirs, to fill the high
energy demand. Producing these resources is dangerous and unfriendly to our environment because of the
presence of toxic hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide. All these products need special process to become
useful energy.
The big question arises as to what can be done with the by-products of these processes, hydrogen sulfide,
carbon dioxide and other more. If it contains sufficient quantities of hydrogen sulfide, it can be converted to
something more benefit such as elemental sulfur. However, as the production of sulfur increases, certainly the
demand and the price will fall. Is there another option? Carbon dioxide has the same problems as hydrogen
sulfite to our human and environment. What do we do with CO2? Continue to release to the air? Therefore, all
needs to fill those demands for energy have also put a strain on the earth’s environment. Whether or not you
believe that man is changing the earth’s climate, it is very clear that the earth’s environment is changing.
Three technologies have emerged (or are emerging) that increase the energy supply and reduce the effect on
the environment. These technologies are: Acid gas injection (AGI), Enhanced oil recovery by CO2 injection
(CO2 EOR), and Carbon capture and storage (CCS). Each of these involves the injection of a stream rich in
hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, or both. These mixtures are called acid gases; a name that arises because
CO2 and H2S form weak acids when dissolved in water.
A symposium for acid gas injection was the brainchild of Sphere Technology Connection, a Calgary
company specializing in transfer technology related to the petroleum industry throughout the world. AGIS will
discuss all processes related to the injection of acid gases – AGI, CO2 EOR, rich gas injection EOR and CCS.
All of these processes share common aspects and there are synergies that can be exploited from the more
mature processes (EOR) to the emerging processes (CCS).
In 2016, it will be the sixth international Acid Gas Injection Symposium (AGIS VI) which will be held in
Houston, Taxes, USA. AGIS VI will include a special keynote speaker, workshops, technical exhibitions,
roundtable discussion, and paper presentations by experts from throughout the world. In the past, we have had
more than 300 delegations from Canada, USA, Australia, Russia, Scotland, England, France, Italy, Germany,
The Netherland, Switzerland and Chin. In total more than 200 papers were presented including six keynote
addresses. Five books from AGIS presentations have been published by Scrivener Publishing in associate with
with John Wiley & Son.
