Marshall SDG (MSDG)

Marshall SDG (MSDG) is a systems design house set

up to provide the Marshall Land Systems (MLS) and the

wider defence and security community with a problem

solving and solution delivering capability. With particular

expertise in unmanned and remote vehicles including

autonomy, power management and electronic

compatibility. MSDG also provides a wide range of

consultancy in areas as diverse as safety cases, vehicle

integration and mechanical engineering.

MSDG’s capability in the unmanned vehicle arena was

highlighted when it was part of the winning team for the

UK MOD Grand Challenge. MSDG’s semi-autonomous

ground platform is part of a range of capabilities that

include autonomous and semi-autonomous ground and

air vehicles, remote controlled platforms and ground

control stations.

These platforms have many applications ranging from

Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) to reconnaissance

and surveillance, using a suite of different sensors such

as ISTAR, CBRN, Ground Penetrating Radar, security

and safety such as fire prevention patrolling and range

clearance. Design of UGVs for use in hazardous areas is

a particular skill. An example of this is QUESTAR®;

an agile fast moving tracked or wheeled vehicle.

The ground control stations range from small hand held

devices through boxed portable sets to complete UAV

systems mounted in vehicles, ISO containers or

installed in buildings. High levels of electronic integrity

and compatibility are part of the design and

manufacture of these Ground Control Stations.

The autonomous systems have given MSDG a world

leading position in “follow me” vehicles. These have

particular applications in assisted load carriage for

overburdened troops and EOD, security and high risk

workers. The company’s TRAKKAR® UGV is particularly

suited for this type of activity.

MSDG’s understanding of autonomous systems has

been extended into the area of remote control. The

company has successfully fitted out a Land Rover with

the necessary instrumentation and controls, and

demonstrated driving it from a remote control station

which replicates the remote vehicle’s driver position.

In the consultancy area MSDG provides advice on safety

issues, power management, energy solutions, electronic

compatibility and integrity and mechanical integration.

These are used across the parent company, Marshall Land

Systems (MLS), and by the wider design and

manufacturing community. In particular, MSDG’s safety

critical skills in management and conflict resolution within

electronic systems give it a very high reputation in

designing and testing for Electro Magnetic Compatibility

and Electro Magnetic Interference.

MSDG provides advice to verify or investigate safety

cases and incidents. These range from loading and

unloading systems on ships and vehicles, to procedures

and training that prevent accidents, injury and damage.

MSDG’s power and energy management skills allow fuel

cells to be developed and tested, auxiliary power pack

sizes to be optimised and new supplies to be integrated

into complex electronic systems.

A particular capability within MSDG is the ability to assess

older equipment, to provide recommendations for

updating and to carry out the refurbishment. An example

of this was the Run Up Trolleys used to test the

powerpacks for Challenger 2 and its derivatives.

MSDG’s mechanical and integration skills are used by many

customers to design and integrate items as diverse as recoil

systems for guns and suspension systems for tracked

vehicles. These skills are also used to manage the integration

of complete vehicle fits of electronics and weapon systems

and to carry out the modernisation of old equipment to meet

new environmental, health and safety or operational

requirements.

As well as its own in-house skills the team at MSDG acts

as a small prime to bring into a project the skills and

products of other like companies and parts of the Marshall

Group especially MLS. MSDG’s investigative and

analytical capability is well known and is brought to bear

as part of both its design and consultancy activities.

Backed by the ability to project manage complex projects,

meet ISO and other quality domains, understand the end

users’ need and capability requirement and provide a full

through life capability (TLCM) management capability

MSDG is trusted to provide safety critical services to the UK

MOD, within the Marshall Group, MDBA, BAE Systems,

General Dynamics (UK), Thales Group and many other

organisations needing these services.

Marshall Land Systems (MLS) was formed in 2008 to manage the land systemsbusinesses of the Marshall Group. Primarily concerned with defence it also workson security, Non Government Organisation and civilian projects where similar levelsof ruggedness and performance to the military are required to allow effectivedeployment and operation.

MLS has six operational areas. Working through focussed and dedicated projectmanagement teams MLS specialises in the integration of capability and systemsinto and onto platforms. The company is agnostic about which platform thesolution is based on and often works in partnership with the end user to find thecorrect platform for the capability required.

Marshall SDG (MSDG) is responsible for capability development. MSDG does thisfor the UK MOD and major defence and security companies and is particularly wellknown for its capability in the unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) area and weaponscontrol systems. It also has skills in integrated protection, engineering, CBRN, EW,ECM, EMC/EMI conflict resolution and safety case planning and verification.

Marshall Specialist Vehicles (MSV) provides protected workspace solutions. This can take the form of integrated shelter solutions on vehicles or transportableground deployed systems or both. These shelters are typically based on standardISO 20ft footprints but other sizes and configurations are used to provide medicalfacilities up to and including Role 2 hospitals, C4ISTAR, workshops, laboratories, operational HQs, specialist stores preparation, transport facilities and almost anyother infrastructure requirement. The ISO shelters can be standard steel or state ofthe art matrix single or double expandable variants.

MSV opened a subsidiary business in Norway in 2010 to support this market.

Marshall Vehicle Engineering (MVE) provides vehicle engineering and logisticssystems. Its products include a range of vehicle load beds for the UK MoD andother users. The company has a state of the art robotic welding and e-dip facilitywith together with full design and engineering resources.

Marshall Fleet Solutions (MFS) specialises in the provision of fleet support and fleetsolutions to land transport fleets particularly for climate controlled trailers. It deliversfleet support; from its own nationwide bases, at customers’ installations or at theroadside. MFS’s 160 mobile fitter teams have diesel, mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, climate control and vehicle engineering expertise. With its own 24/7 call centre MFSis increasingly becoming involved with military as well as civil customers.

Marshall Land Systems Australia (MLSA) was recently formed to follow businessin Australia. It covers all aspects of MLS’s business in Australia.

Lorica Systems UK is responsible for the provision of survivability solutions formilitary and security customers. Coupled with expertise from across the MLScompanies Lorica Systems UK assists in the delivery of integrated protectedsolutions into and onto platforms.
