Zorbax RP-HPLC Column Chemistry DescriptionsZorbax RP-HPLC preparative columns are offered in a variety of bonded phase types, depending on the pH of the mobile phase. In general, StableBond columns are recommended for low pH, Eclipse XDB and Bonus RP columns for mid-range pH, and Extend-C18 for high pH separations. Listed on the following pages are thecharacteristics of each bonded phase.

ZORBAX StableBond (300 Å) Column Ordering Information*
ZORBAX StableBondColumns (80 Å and 300 Å)• Longer column lifetime, reproducibility
for low pH separations of basic and other compounds.
• Unique monofunctional silanes with bulky diisobutyl (with C18) or diisopropyl (with C8, C3, Phenyl, propyl CN) side chain groups sterically protect the key siloxane bond from hydrolytic attack at low pH. To maximize reproducibility under acidic pH conditions, StableBond packing materials are not endcapped.
• Broad selectivity using a wide selection of stable short-chain phases
• Use temperature as a retentivity/ selectivity variable for such difficult compounds as hydrophobic peptides

ZORBAX Bonus-RP• Embedded polar group chemistry (amide) provides good peak shape at both low
and mid-range pH• Unique bulky diisopropyl groups sterically protect the bonded phase from hydrolysis and
loss, which provides maximum lifetime at low pH• Useable in 100% aqueous mobile phases• Unique selectivity complementing alkyl phases such as C18 or C8• Unique triple endcapping deactivates silanols• ZORBAX Rx-SIL sol-based ultrapure silica (99.995%) that ensures long column life at mid-range pH
ZORBAX Extend-C18• Good peak shape and long column life at high pH for separation of basic, acidic and neutral compounds • Extends column utility to a variety of applications:
• Separating basic compounds above their pKa in free base (uncharged) form giving added retention and/or alternate selectivity• Using ammonium hydroxide as mobile phase with LC/MS with peptides or small molecules for excellent signal/noise
performance and alternate selectivity • General separation of basic, acidic, neutral compounds at high pH providing different selectivity or improved solubility
• Uses a novel C18/C18 bidentate structure and is also double endcapped using a proprietary procedure for increased stability at high pH
• Built on highly purified ZORBAX Rx-SIL, a sol-based silica that contributes to improved column life at high pH• Complete useable range from pH 2-11.5 and may be appropriate for use in low and intermediate pH mobile phases

• Cyanpropyldimethylsilane monolayer bonded to ZORBAX SIL
• Equilibrates more rapidly than ZORBAX SIL, and is used for many ofthe same normal phase applications

• The alkyl silanes used to bond both of these phases to the silica are polyfunctional resulting in a cross-linked or polymeric hydrophobic phase –this provides long column lifetime and no measurable phase leaching
